    How is the contrast and saturation of this lens compared to pentacon 50mm. which one would you prefer between the two.

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  7 лет назад

      its better on this nikkor, the Pentacon is for (best) 20 feet or less and THEN for its amazing bokeh, not much else.

    Just found your RUclips videos and I am a huge fan of prime lenses and adapting them. Took your advice and hunted down the 135 f/2.8 AI-s and 50mm f/1.8 AI-s Pancake. Will adapt them to my Sony A7II and Fuji X-T1 and compare them to my vintage Canon, Pentax, and Zeiss lenses. But I still shoot film but haven't shot a Nikon camera for over 35 years when my uncle, who could afford it, lent me his for a month when my first son was born.
    What's a really nice film Nikon film body to use with these? Thanks in advance for taking the time to reply.

    My friend gave me the 50mm E Series 1.8 "pancake" and a 35mm E Series. I can tell they'll take some practiice to get quick with exposure and focus. Any tips for learning how to focus and get the aperture right or does it only come with experience? Shooting on my d3300 I can really tell the 50mm will take a very nice sharp picture when I get it right.

    I have a Nikkor 16-85 DX as my 'walkaround' lens and find it a good all rounder apart from distortion at 16mm. This was supposed to be the best quality standard DX zoom a few years ago but I don't seem to be able to find many reviews on RUclips about it. Have you tried it ? Would like to hear your thoughts. I do like older Nikkors. Recently bought af 35-105mm for £40 and am impressed with the 10 year old
    cheapo plastic mounted 28-80 produced in Thailand which I purchased for £20. I shoot with a D200 and D7000, both of which I love and do not feel I need to upgrade at present. I enjoy your videos for knowledgeable info. Carry on the good work !!

    Hi Ken, how does the 50mm series e compare to the 45mm f/2.8p and gn that Nikon made when they released the FM3a? I love the 50mm series e, but enjoy the 42-45mm focal length a bit more.

      Ken has a lot of good suggestions... Nikon 50mm f2 manual is another cheap lens. This one 50mm f1.8 e-series is similarly priced. You should look at all his lens video beside 'secret' one and see what you want out of all his recommendations. With a D3200 camera.... cheap lenses are usually manual lenses. Great camera though!

      both actually!!! the pancake is VERY useful because its SO FLAT, I can store my entire DSLR under my jacket in bad weather WITH the lens still on.

      Haaaa! AWESOME !!
      still focus? Then the grease inside is dried up, you must have stored it bad.
      magic is taking it apart, which i do often, but its a PAIN in the fanny, its about removing the OLD grease and adding NEW grease NOT OIL!!!
      you must have store it in a hot spot.
      get it warm under a heating pad, then work the focus back and forth and see if it loosens up

    I just got my 50mm non E 1/1.8 nikkor lens. Put it on my D7100 for a test shot. This is so new to me. I leave tomorrow for a trip out of country. I really want to know how to use this little gem before I go. Any tips you can toss my way?

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 лет назад +1

      sure, what kinda issues do you have? make sure your D7100 switch on the side is in manual mode.
      go into your SETUP MENU, and then NON-CPU LENS MODE, at set the lens for 50mm and, then its max aperture which is 1.8.
      to quickly teach yourself the lens lens, put your D7100 in manual mode and experiment a bit around the house focusing and set your ISO beforehand, and then experiment with shutter and app. settings and check your results.
      After an hour of "play" (MUCH LESS REALLY!!) youll have mastered its essential use in manual and manual focus, and your pictures from that lovely prime will be so much more RICH and have depth, also youll be training on what will make you a far far superior shooter in no time because you will be 100% master of your shot, manual focus, and YOU pick the depth of field with your app. setting and shutter speed.
      dont be intimidated, just experiment for half an hour inside and outside the house and inspect your results after each shot and self-correct!!!
      back in the days of film, we had to wait forever to check out mistakes after film processing !!!

    • @forevertrusting
      @forevertrusting 9 лет назад

      Theoria Apophasis Thanks so much! At first, I was looking how to set the aperture...lol. Dah, the camera has an aperture ring. I took pictures without setting the non-CPU lens mode. Did I ruin anything?
      It's pretty dark now in my house and outside. I got a few shots in. I figure the best ISO settings are similar to other lens? Inside 400 and outside 100.
      I don't have a clue with the shutter speed and aperture. I will take time tomorrow morning during the golden hour to see what's what. Thanks so much for that bit of confidence building. I needed it.

    • @forevertrusting
      @forevertrusting 9 лет назад

      Sherry Pratt Can I just leave that setting when I use other lenses or do I need to switch it back each time?

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 лет назад +1

      you need to tell your camera not to try to focus that manual lens, it doesnt know there is a manual lens on the cammy ! All the pro cameras are that way.
      Check out the 3 pages section on NON CPU LENSES and manual focus on your user manual.
      Ohhh yes, but switching that little lever its just an afterthought after a while.
      you wont mind that "hassle" once you see the great results produced!!!
      also with that tiny short lens you can tuck your camera under your coat etc. , which cannot do with other lenses.

    Hi ,you seem to have a whole lot of knowledge so can you tell me if i put a 50mm 1.8 series E lens on my D600 how do I meter or figure the exposure !

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 лет назад

      mike falasca easy, go to SETUP, in your menu , then to NON CPU LENS,
      then enter the 50mm, then the 1.8 focal, then your camera is happy and knows what the heck lens its got on its front!
      use aperture priority or MANUAL ONLY,.....use the light meter inside, .....it will take you about 10 mins to learn what perfect exposure is for your lens, usually its just OVER 1+ stop overexposed = perfect exposure, but that depends on the scene.

      You probably wont anymore..I bought mine back in June this year (2016) and paid 129$ for it. worth it though as it's in as new condition and is as good as he says as far as sharpness goes. and if you want a a lens thats built like they should be then look no further either...solid all metal construction that will last a lifetime..love mine,and might get a couple more yet.

    I got this lens off ebay for 50 bucks. Its my cheapest lens and also one of the best. After testing it out today I noticed that I could not adjust the aperture from my camera (d7100). Is this normal or is there something that I have to set up? I set the aperture to 22 and set the non cpu lens settings.

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  9 лет назад

      John Estrada on a MF lens, no, you have no ability to adj. the aperture via the camera.....
      on a manual focus lens you gotta adj. the aperture ON the lens :)
      all nikons and all MF lenses are that way

    Hi Theoria,
    I'm looking for some advice please. I have a Nikon D7100 and tend to stick to landscape and architecture photography.
    the lenses I own are: Nikkor 18-105 3.5/5.6, Tokina 11-16 ATX Pro DX mkii and a Nikkor 55-200 3.5/5.6 (mostly unused).
    I'm unsure whether to got for a 35 mm 1.8 prime or 50mm prime, bearing in mind the crop sensor factoring or should i be looking for something completely different for my armoury?
    I would really appreciate your advice as you're the 'go-to guy' on RUclips for reviews and tips and i just love your presentation style!

      Kram Sniggah no problem! I had the same experience when trying to choose between the 50mm or 35mm for my D5100. I did LOTS of research and found that the 35mm is the best choice for DX cameras. Also, I own the 35mm personally and I have to say that I dont regret it at all and have no complaints, its well built and takes amazing photos at the correct settings.
      overall glad I could help and hope you enjoy your 35mm!

    Hey hey, so this pancake lens looks awesome, researched ebay and you can get them pretty cheap. Trouble is, I'm looking for lens for filming specifically. When it comes to this lens, its a little too thin for shooting short films so I was wondering if you had a slightly taller alternative. I watched the video you put up talking about the 50 1.4 and the f2. The one where you said you could throw the 2 down the road and it would still be intact. Do you think that 2 would be a better bet??

      +Mik S. I'd recommend the old AI-S or even AI version, not this new one. It feels light and plasticky in general really.

    • @madpogue
      @madpogue 3 года назад

      @nightsbringer1, in case you're still following this -- your D5300 will only work in Manual (M) mode with this lens. You can only set the aperture with the aperture ring on the lens. Light metering will be a guess, unless you have an hand-held meter. Just bracket your shots at multiple apertures until you get the right exposure. In the viewfinder, I found that the "too close" and "too far" focus indicator arrows don't work, but the "bang on" focus indicator dot DOES work. No idea why.
