My 77 Toyota celica with a 20R, the temperature gauge just stopped working and There was a dangling wire that looked like it connected with something but didn't know were. Thank guys this video was very helpful.
I shot this on a lark because I couldn't find ANY info about it online, and it's become one of my most-popular videos. Fortunately/unfortunately, that truck almost never breaks, so it's hard to shoot more videos about fixing things!
I have a 1990 with the 22R and 99.9% of all the resources I’ve found for that is for the 22RE. I’ve had people tell me there was no 22R in 1990… I was changing the oil and had a stubborn oil filter not want to come off. Must’ve bumped the connector to the temp gauge sender. This video was a lifesaver. Thanks for posting!
Oh man thank you for this video I have a 1980 Toyota and I have been having bad temp readings and I thought it had two different temperatures sending units so this really helped.
Mean as you just solved the problem for me m8 same thing happened no reading and the vacuum hoses confessed me found that wire i had knocked it off thanks heaps
you just helped me!, i forgot to take a picture before i stripped my 94 22r manifold , duh!, i am desmogging so the thermal switch on the manifold goes, but all pictures i were finding did not pinpoint things properly, i did find out mine are 16x1.5 metric threads interestingly enough (micrometer and thread guage were used!) , the sender switch stays. thanks
Very helpful as I have this motor and recently I noticed it didn’t move off cold. I thought the top thing was the sensor but you say it’s the sensor on the side connected to the white clip.
Thanks. The wire to the connector on my 87 22r broke off, and I was mighty anxious about what it might be. Should be an easy fix to wire up another connector.
On my 84 carburetor model converted to Weber someone past owner hooked the temp sender wire to the temp switch on the top up by the thermostat housing WRONG! my truck always ran in the middle to 3/4 hot range and climbed to red going up big grades I replaced my whole cooling system 3core radiator new thermostat (dual stage) water pump flushed the whole system The actual location of the temp sender on a 22R for the gauge is under the intake towards the front right side of engine get a flashlight and look real close mine had a female connector pulled off still stuck on it then someone put the wire on the temp switch Hope this helps someone
What color is the wire that connects to the temperature sensor? If possible what color wire the oil sensor connects to. The Previous owner cut some wires that I need help figuring out. Thank you!
This is a long shot but did either of you find out the colour I have a 6 prong plug with 2 wires cut one is yellow with green stripe other is green with red stripe any chance it’s one of them
Thank you. My guage wasnt coming up. I had a bad thermostat, changed it but must have bumped this wire loose because it still wasnt warming up with the new themostat. Works great now
I have a 1977 toyota 20R I replaced the thermostat 2 years ago. Before it was replaced my gage inside worked. I opened the hood finding a wire disconnected below on side of block. Then it read on dash. I knew my water pump gasket was bad waited. Because I would check radiator make sure coolant oil all good. 2 years now. I replaced gasket on water pump after truck would start to chug -a-lug. It got bad chug-a-lug got home. My gauge showed temp rising. It creaked and stopped under my carport. I waited. After putting gasket on water pump. I had to adjust carb mix, idle, fast idle. I put new spark plug wires, 1 new plug all the rest look good plus it was running great B4 this. It had an exhaust leak a friend said. I wonder if the sensor is bad does it tell the thermastat to open or close? I read thermostat tells the coolant to flow when engine gets 🔥🥵 Even though it is only 2 years old if it does not work changing the gasket on the water pump NO MORE leak & fan turns NO WIGGLING or Clanging sound FAN CLUTCH TURNING WATER PUMP the truck starts but gets very hot fast dies....... It it the water SENSOR?
What do the the thermo switches do? I have a 1980 pickup and bought a new sensor, wasnt able to have it sit correctly in the sensor hole, but could fit perfectly on the thermo switch spot...(I only have 1 switch). Cant find any literature on what the thermo switch does
Can you tell me where the other end of this wire connects to please? I’m having same problem but it’s the other end of the wire that’s been cut and I don’t know where to connect it to. I have a 1986 Toyota pickup with 22R
I'm honestly not sure, since it just goes into that harness that you see at around 1:02. The next time I visit my dad I'll poke around and see if I can come up with a better answer for you, though.
What do you think the problem could be if the temperature gauge only goes up a little bit past "C" for Cold? I've got a 1983 Toyota SR5. The needle just moves a little bit.
It's a variable resistance output (I think... I haven't actually put a voltmeter on it) rather than an on/off so I wouldn't recommend it. Probably the easiest, no-coolant-on-the-driveway solution for electric fan control would be a separate temperature switch with a probe that slides between the fins on the exterior of the radiator, like this one: amzn.to/3ii3eOZ
Thanks for the info. Even though my new temp sensor was the same size it wouldn't thread all the way... so I gave it a tad more force and cracked whatever the piece the sensor is threaded too... any clue what that is?
If it was the dashboard sender, that screws into the cylinder head, so I doubt you cracked the head casting. Was it one of the thermo switches up top on the thermostat housing by any chance?
If I am not mistaken, that is a 22RE EFI engine - it probably has two. One sends to the EFI and one sends to the dash gauge. But I am not an expert on the fuel injected version.
I'm sorry - this was shot kind of off-the-cuff and if I was going to redo it I would be better prepared. If you go to 1:15 you can see the sensor and the connector right in the middle of the picture, all lit up. I hope this helps...
I can't remember off the top of my head whether resistance rises or falls with temperature, but step one in troubleshooting will be to disconnect that spade terminal from the sender, see what the gauge says, then jumpering the spade terminal to the block (ground) to see if that gives your gauge a different result. LMK what you find out!

Thanks! I've been looking for this online for days and no success until I found this video!
This answered my question😂 but I'm more impressed that you told your dad to hold the flashlight where you needed 😂😂
I have an 85 also. Please keep the videos coming because information is so limited. There's lots of 22RE videos but not 22R 2WD's.

If you're interested in carburetors for these motors I just came across this gold mine. board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=102349.0

My man, it was extremely helpful. Thank you for taking the time to make the video. Been banging my head for a year now.
This saved me thank you so much literally just that small wire came loose on mine you’re a savior!

Thank you very much been trying to work out the problem with mine and your advice has solved my headache again thanks a million

Yep. I figured that if I was confused about what went where, other people would be too, and it would be pretty easy to help them out.

Major help.. I remember putting before but, for my dear life I couldn't remember where it was!! Thank you..
Is the coolant switch and the coolant sensor the same part in these 22r trucks or are they separate parts? Thanks
Thanks
Very help full I have the same problem.
Thanks a lot man
87 toyota pickup replaced ENTIRE COOLING System and still goes to almost whote top line and then back to normal operating temp what am i missing????
Thanks mate!
Is anyone still here? My temp gage in my 84 22R 4Runner isn't working. How do I test the sensor now that I can locate it?
Where is the knock sensor located?

Big tip.if u have a ac compressor you don't have to remove it. Remove the fule pump to access the temp sensor

Victor Andrew Lopez truck is warmed up my guess
Mine is an 88 22r. had the same problem, changing the thermostat fixed it
thank you!
You're welcome
It actually doesn’t screw into the block it screws into the intake manifold
Should I attach my electric cooling fan to this sensor rather than either of the two up top?

I gotta 1980 with the 20r. What the sensor be in the same location ?
I would guess so, but I have no direct experience with that engine. At least this should get you started on where to look. LMK what you find!

@@Spinolio Looks like I cracked the Intake Manifold itself... I have a replacement, but patched it up for now
Is the gauge temp sensor the one on the side near the oil filter, or on the top near the fuel pump?
You can see it around 1:08 - it's right beneath the fuel pump.
@@Spinolio what about the one that is above?
What is made for?
i have a toyota 22r but dont know how to fix the engine got wet on a cyclone
Is it in a similiar area on the 22re?
I honestly don't know. But they use the same block and head AFAIK, so that would be a good place to start looking.
Anybody know where I can find a new sensor
How many temperature sensor ineed total for my 1991 Toyota 22r
If I am not mistaken, that is a 22RE EFI engine - it probably has two. One sends to the EFI and one sends to the dash gauge. But I am not an expert on the fuel injected version.
Honestly I don't know. The only 22R I have worked on is carbed, not EFI
What's the sensor next to oil filter for?
oil pressure sensor
Tengo una Hilux 1997 sencilla, no se cuál es el cable de temperatura que llega al clúster. Quien me pueda ayudar le agradecería 🙏🏻🙏🏻
You should of had a ink pen or something to POINT TO THE SENSOR BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW WHICH 1 YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT

what color is the actual wire? my connectors have all be cut :(
I’m trying to get mine fixed right now the wire is yellow/ green stripe
@@CrimsonJohn-vo2ou thanks exactly what I was trying to figure out
Mine reads hot as soon as I turn the key??
