  • When should I brace for lower back pain is dependent on a few factors. If you just experienced or are recovering from an episode of back pain a back brace may be helpful. Let's discuss the different types of braces on the market. The main three categories are soft, semi-rigid, rigid and custom molded corset.
    The function of lumbar braces is to restrict movement and protect the back. In many cases the lumbar braces protect by limiting range of motion especially in the more rigid braces. The presence of a brace can serve as a reminder to move more carefully in the early stages of an injury. However, we have a segment of people who believe consciously or unconscioulsy that the brace will almost prevent a flare of back pain or prevent future episodes. Ultimately, you should be aware of the pros and cons of back braces to ensure you do more harm than good.
    If you have just had your first episode of back pain I prefer a soft brace to allow more natural movement but remind you during periods of time when lifting and doing light activities of daily living. I prefer to wear the brace during active times and don't like having the brace on when sleeping, lying down or sitting. I prefer the use of lumbar supports in siting and special pillows for sleeping or napping.
    After the first 3 days after the first episode or a reoccurrence I would prefer people start weaning off the braces during gentle light activities like cooking a meal or putting on shoes to see how they are doing. If you continue to wear the brace deconditioning can occur and the person will adopt different movement patterns that may cause problems in the future.
    In addition donning a lumbar brace I recommend in severe cases, not that more than 20 minutes at a time or as little as needed to prevent stretching of areas of the back that are attempting to heal. Must be proactive about getting up because at times back and stretched , but the body does not notice it until the returns to standing resulting in severe. Most braces make it difficult to make a transfer from a chair or locality because it blocks, in some cases, the hip, tendon at the hip specially just the people that are overweight.
    Once the pain is relatively under control the most active of daily living are comfortable I prefer not to continue to use the brace. I prefer patients learn how to improve their mechanics when lifting and moving them learn the natural bracing to prevent tolerance for especially heavy with for that patient. One patient heavy lifting may be picking up a gallon milk which is 8 pounds and for others it can be a 50 pound bag sand.

    I am about one month out from my 42 birthday. I was born with deformed ankles. Doctors put me in casts as soon as I was born. My feet are the flatest many doctors have seen. I have weird inserts to help. When I was 32, my little car was rear-ended by a large truck damaging my L4 and L5. Swimming and my inversion table have helped me a great deal.
    Yesterday, I helped a friend move and hurt my back. Today, I purchased a soft back brace that I should have had on while helping my friend move. Before wearing it, I could barely walk to the toilet. With it on, I was able to take my wife out and cook dinner tonight. I will try not to use it like a crutch, but man, is it nice to be a little more mobile!

    Great bit of advice I'm actively looking for some form of support after an accident at work. I drive semis and deliver to supermarkets for a living and while making a delivery one of the heavy cages tipped over and i didn't let go soon enough pulling the lower back muscles. Pain wasn't immediately obvious but knocked me for 6 a day later, couldn't drive walk bend or do anything around the house This happened last week so been pretty much off work since. My back however is giving me mixed signals Like yesterday, i thought i'd turned the corner was virtually pain free though still a little stiff around the area and thought i could get back to work. Took my dogs out for a walk and when i got up this morning Pain had reared it's ugly head again
    Obviously need to get back to work again but knowing the heavy loads i have to handle is this too soon or will a soft brace help in that situation ? Any insight or advice would be tremendously helpful.

      A soft brace may help and will remind you of your back positioning. Check out my video on McKenzie exercises. I would start with the prone pressups.
      If you can’t find the video I will send you the link.

    Everybody refers to back pain that is in the "lower back." But my back pain is above the waist and on both sides of the back - sort of where the kidneys are (I would think that would be considered "mid-back"). I suspect it's either the serratus posterior inferior or the latissimus dorsi. I do have a visit to the doctor coming up, but I would like to find something to use (a brace?) to help until then. Female, 5'7," large in the midriff...Any recommendations for the kind of brace that might help??

    I got rear ended by a car going 80mph while I was at a stand still and only got some scratches and bruises along with a concussion but now I find my back aching more so than usual at work to the point it makes my work day twice as hard because the pain is so bad. I used to be able to stand for 6 hours straight at my old job and now I find myself punching my lower back after about 3 hours of standing. Im not sure if I should get a brace or what. This accident was about two months ago and my back wakes me up 6-8 times a night it's a living nightmare and im only 18 so it worries me if my back is just screwed and will only get worse. (To be specific it is my lower back a little bit above my belt line) if you could recommend any specific braces for lower back pain please lmk id greatly appreciate it thank you.

      @@apexmovebetter I think if people have any pain, they should reduce all activity down to an absolute minimum.
      Unfortunately, many people cannot afford to truly lay in bed and heal the proper way without any movement, so they should definitely not be adding any extra activity on top of the amount that they are forced to do by going to work/cooking/etc which prolongs recovery.
      The greatest luxury is recovery, recovery comes from rest if there’s pain, not from physical “therapy”

    • @apexmovebetter
      @apexmovebetter  2 года назад +1

      @@MobileAura most injuries do not benefit from complete rest and a little soreness during recovery is normal. This is well documented in the medical literature.
      I do recommend guidance from a health care practitioner for the proper timing

    • @MobileAura
      @MobileAura 2 года назад +1

      @@apexmovebetter The proper timing will almost never be known by a healthcare practitioner, and rarely by the patient, even. A little soreness in your lower back that never goes away/lingers during recovery is not normal at all… The only reason people have these issues is due to weakness/overload, the “obvious” solution is to fix that weakness, however in fixing that weakness is the main reason people never recover, because they needed rest. Trying to do this juggling act back-and-forth is extremely dangerous and inefficient. The only reasonable solution is full rest.
      For a healthcare practitioner to somehow know when to restart, they would have to recommend restart at complete recovery, only doing short/light walks to start. Little back soreness is ok if you’re a fit 15, at average 30+ body doesn’t allow this anymore.
