Saw Pinetop Perkins in Austin at Antone's. He was great and had a good band behind including some of the Antone's house musicians. Time to close rolled around (2AM), Pinetop's set ended but he absolutely refused to leave the stage probably because of the great warm reception and cheering he received from the Austin crowd. Antone tried to talk him off the stage but Pinetop still refused and motioned for everyone to gather around his piano for another song. The lights and electric instruments were off and the band had left the stage. Pinetop played another song for about 30 people who gathered around his piano. It is one of my most memorable moments in live music history, runs shivers down my spine and almost makes me cry when I think about how great he was and how much he loved to play. Clifford Antone was such a great blues ambassador and brought all the great black blues musicians to Austin. What a great time that was!

Willie “Big Eyes” Smith sang this at his funeral. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. 😿 Willie wasn’t far behind him. They were “joined.”
