As a boat owner for over 20 years...I've never forgotten to take the straps off my front or rear boat, as well as never forgetting about the plug....at least I like to think that. hahaha. You should make a video about ramp etiquette as well. I hate it when people see a ton of boats waiting, yet still sit and tied to the dock shooting the breeze.
Great idea! I covered that in the Yamaha Boating academy that is linked in the video description, but it would probably be good to also film it for my channel
great video. Some (when alone)use a long bow line at let it drag off(coiled) the trailer, then grab it after the boat floats. You always have control of the boat.. Then tie it off and go park your vehicle.
I also launch by myself almost ever time I go fishing. One thing I do is attach a dock line ( about 30 feet ) to the boat and trailer to keep my boat tethered until I can get on the dock.
I just watched 2 videos that both launched this way. It’s all fine and dandy when ya have them power poles to throw down when ya f up. I’d have way to much anxiety to launch like this!
@@jcappel802 I don’t have power poles. I tie about 25 to 30 foot of line with one end to my boat and the other end to my trailer. I back my boat into the water until it floats then get out untie the line from the trailer and walk it to the dock.
Good Video! As some have commented, I use a rope as well to keep the boat from blowing away due to wind.. also use my Talons to hold the boat at times.
For all the people who wanted me to talk about using a rope when launching by myself, I don’t use a rope, so of course I’m not going to talk about that😂 As soon as I get too old to be shimmying around the back of the truck and hopping on the trailer, I will make a video using a rope
Do glad this video is out now , I dm’ed you about this video a while ago glad it came out. Gonna be going on my first solo boat trip this coming week thank you for the tips and help Tyler!
This is crazy. I stopped at this part because everything he said and was about to say is spot on. I’ve had a boat for well over 10 years and my nickname is Tow Mater. Prep and check till you find nothing then one more time. Build a process and take it slow. Don’t be ashamed to correct. Well done Tyler. 🎉🎉 6:16
I don't really like other people helping me much. Most can't back a trailer and others can't load a boat straight. It's less stress for me to just do it myself until they have been out a few times and learned. Everyone says they can do it, few newbies actually can. Now my wife is awesome at all of it when she gets to go with me.
Great instruction video Tyler. As always, wise beyond your years! I use a rope tied to the bow loop to pull it back into shore as most of my Ramps dont have docks. I also have a Truckers Knob on my steering wheel to make backups and towing easier.
Being someone who doesn't own a boat but wants to get one, how do you work all the controls? Is there a boating class that teaches you where all the controls are and what the different jargon means?
That boat launch procedure looks really cool. If you’re a beginner, do not follow the last step without someway to secure your boat before you get out of the truck when launching solo. All other considerations discussed were great! Also, consider the size of your boat vs the 21 footer vs the wind direction.
Why your boat ramps so good? Mine here in TN are steeper that mountains or just flat and have to back the end of the truck in to launch, and not counting all the huge logs on the ramps all the time and green slimy stuff that is super slippery where I bust my back slipping. And yes that was a very long rant.
Two things that most folks should do if launching by themselves: First, keep you boat strapped to the winch, so the boat can launch off the trailer and not run away from the docks. Second, start the boat before unstrapping the boat from the winch. I've seen and helped more boaters retrieve their boats that floated away from the dock while they are getting out of their vehicles and if the boat doesn't start, then it will be able to be put back on the trailer.
Get a routine for getting straps off and plugs in and you will get it down with time, for backing up it’ll just take time so go at a not busy time and just back it down. Take a break if you frustrated cause it will only go downhill
If you're by yourself, it also helps if you tie a line off to the boat and your truck, just Incase the boat decides to get taken away, and I personally wait til the boat is right at the waters edge before I disconnect the winch AND the safety chain. I have personally had a winch fail and if it wasn't for my chain, the boat would have rolled right off onto the ramp.
I like to run a rope from the boat tie down hook on the front to the truck as I'm backing it down that way I don't have any concern about it getting away. Of course I'm handicap and Walk with a cane so I'm a little slow getting out and to the boat than a health person is.
The “trim blocker” is called a transom tote and it’s to keep your boat motor straight and to keep the motor from turning side to side and bouncing up and down while towing to protect your motor the lower unit the trim and everything in the back end of your boat from damage
While this method obviously works for you quite well i dont think most older anglers can do this. I fish alone and am 63 yrs old. I am very fit and agile still as i was in the military for 37 years and i dont think I’d attempt this method. I simple back the boat into the water until the trailer wheels are under water, put my vehicle in park with emergency brake on and then unclimbed the safety strap, climb in the boat, start it up, back off the trailer, tie to dock and then go park my trailer. No chance of the boat ever getting away from me. I also purchased a ‘trick step’ for the bow of the trailer which allows me to climb in and out of the boat without ever getting wet. Most pros i know who fish alone have one …
Hey you forgot to park the truck!! 🤣 JK that angle tip will help I also usually go alone!! Hey you should do a vid on the hazards of ramps that could cause you’re vehicle to go into the water! Like algae on the ramp I saw a truck similar to the one you have slide right into the lake!! It’s on RUclips some where you should check it out if you haven’t seen that one! Thanks again! Also THAT BOAT!! Nice!!
Best advice I’ve ever gotten was don’t be the jack ass laughing at the ramp. Everyone has tough launches. Help your fellow man out! Hell he may even invite you out next time so you can do more than beat the bank!
Hey Tyler! Any plans to go more in depth with your rod, reel, and line setups? I would be very interested in hearing how you set up each different type and what line you choose for each. Having this in one video would be a great reference to keep going back to instead of searching through each individual video!
It may sound stupid when prepping a boat for launch since there are only a few tasks to perform but you could always prepare a simple checklist. Once you think you have completed all the tasks review the steps again to make sure everything is ready to go!
I prefer to power off the boat that way it's never out of my control when it comes off the trailer. You do this by only putting the trailer in far enough to let the friction from the bunk boards hold the boat which is usually when the water hits the top of the trailer tires. Fire up the engine and back the boat off usually just takes a little blip of the throttle to pull the boat off the bunks.
Don't bring too much, and take it slow! Really get used to how your kayak feels. Also search "Tylersreelfishing kayak". I am sure I have made videos about that
I once forgot to take my transom saver off.. ran clear cross about a mile to my spot wondering wtf was wrong with my motor. Didn't realize it until I got to my first spot.. I was just so excited to get out on the water.. Yes I'm an idiot for it.. But I'd like to think it could happen to anyone. Especially being excited like that.

Good video. Another point to make for beginners is be courteous of others on the ramp. Be prepared to launch and when you're done get out of the way.

I think it's a good idea to put your boat plug in before you leave home - then recheck its tightness just before launching.

That I do!
For entertainment I watch those videos of boating mishaps. You just can't believe what people do behind the wheel of a boat!
I always leave the bow strap hooked up until my boat is in the water so it doesn't float away. I have a tiny boat though.
At the end I thought when he was talking about being safe on the water he was gonna bring up the engine not starting :P

Park far away and take wider turns
