I have a full system on how to find suits that fit perfectly for less than 1/10 of their original cost. Just contact me to find out more: cw@charleswaugh.com
Muddy, Great question! What I'm showing here is how to measure an existing jacket that already fits you so you can buy more jackets that fit you the same way. Once you have these 5 measurements, you can then buy a suit jacket from a re-sale source like Ebay with confidence, knowing they will fit you. The "add four inches" rule that you mentioned is for when you are using direct measurements of your body to figure out what 'might' fit you. I find it is much better to measure something that fits you already and then just buy something with those same measurements. Thanks far the question! Charles
Much appreciated, I was struggling to find a match on ebay based on my actual measurements. Using a suit that was already measured and fits me was so much easier, thanks.
Glad to help! BTW: I have a full system on how to find and buy the best suits at a fraction of the dollars of new. I got a Brioni for $250 that fit me like a glove (and the Brioni Nomentano is around $5,000 new!) Let me know if you're interested. Cheers!
I stumbled onto this video by accident, and it was timely because I had a buyer on Ebay asked me for measurements for a jacket I was selling. I had put some measurements in but they were confusing. I see how these key measurements are most important. Thanks so much
Thank you for this video. It was very helpful. I have a men's jacket with a size tag that is no longer readable. I measured the jacket as you demonstrated. How do I determine what the size would be based on the measurements?
Sorry, this method is only for buying and selling used clothes. If you are buying a used jacket, sellers on Ebay list these measurements the way I have shown how to measure them. I have no idea how various manufacturers determine what a 44R or a 48L is in new clothes. Sorry. :-(
Well, the big idea is that it makes no difference what the STATED SIZE is - here I'm just measuring 'what fits right', or 'what IS'. This is empirical, not nominal size. A 42R from Armani is different from a 42R from Oxxford is different from a 42R from Brooks Brothers. Measuring like this lets you find essentially PRE-TAILORED SUITS that will fit YOU just right.
Its pit to pit measurement x 2 minus 2. For example you will measure 22 inches from armpit to armpit, than the equation will be: 22 x 2 - 2 = 42. So the jacket size is 42. I found this equation working best for current fit, in the past circumference was usually reduced by 4, which makes this example size 40, but this a too loose fit for most modern men. Regular, Short or Long depends on sleeve and back length. In general sleeves up to 24 inches are Short, 25 is Regular and 26 inches and more is Long. This can vary in smaller or bigger sizes, up or less 1 inch. Use Size tag only as a guideline, to start your search what size to look for and from there always use your jacket measurements. Don't rely on tag.
As I note in the first comment on this page: Find a suit jacket that fits you the way YOU like and measure IT. The current rage in styles is a 'skinny' suit, which, to me, looks way too tight across the waist (leaving you with the BIG X cross your chest where the suit is straining against the button when closed.) Looks great on models who are perfectly fit and very young. That's not everybody's body shape, nor taste. As with all style decisions, your mileage WILL vary. See 'Kanye West' for details. : - )
This is the clearest and best example I have ever seen. My compliments.

I had to use my son's dress coat to figure out how to order a sports jacket for him. He's away at college. This was SO helpful! Thanks so much!
Well done sir. I am measuring a jacket to list on eBay and needed the exact details you cover.
That's great information. Thank you! Can you show us how to tell the size of a jacket or suit when there is no tag inside?

Thanks Charles! You da man!

Well done!!!!
So with the measurements you just did. What would be the suit jacket size in the uk?
Well, the big idea is that it makes no difference what the STATED SIZE is - here I'm just measuring 'what fits right', or 'what IS'.

Great video thank you!
Very clear, helpful. Thanks.
How do you determine jacket size if no tag is present, for example 42 R 44R etc.?
Its pit to pit measurement x 2 minus 2. For example you will measure 22 inches from armpit to armpit, than the equation will be: 22 x 2 - 2 = 42.
So the jacket size is 42.
I found this equation working best for current fit, in the past circumference was usually reduced by 4, which makes this example size 40, but this a too loose fit for most modern men.
Regular, Short or Long depends on sleeve and back length.

Don't rely on tag.
