Minor correction, you don't actually have to do Tanith's questline and get to the snow area to fight this boss. It's also possible to reach it by going through the secret village connected to Volcano Manor. There's a teleport portal at the end of it which takes you to the same spot as the questline.
There's actually a hidden wall at the Manor. As you enter the hall with rooms, open the very first door on the right which is the room with an item. There's a painting on the right side of that item, dodge forward and it will reveal a secret hallway with snails in it. There should be a flight of stairs leading down which is an access area that gets you to the exact volcanic location. Proceed your way to the boss as normal.
@@TheHolydruid after you beat the godskin noble you take the lift and go and jump off the ledge in the back. From there its pretty much a straight shot to the portal, you can just the other lift outside working and jump half way off to get a stonekey

man I just realized that the spear was working only against the boss lol........ I used it for the first time outside the arena just before entering the boss and I thought it was shit.... I was going in the lava and tanking all those hit ahahah. I used the spear and got it first time lol
The stagger strat in the 2nd phase is amazing! Beat him right after I watched this. You just have to let that second leg hit the ground and then go again. Thank you... The arena is the real boss.

I didn't know there were other attacks besides the FP use one, till I watched it. I'm so dumb, I just assumed I had to use the FP one, and never even tried to hit the other attacks. I was raging over how slow the attack ones and how am I supposed to maintain FP for all this. Lol

If you're a mage/spell sword like me with high int and low vigor I suggest respecing at renalla for this fight. I'm level 96 and put all my points into vigor endurance and mind for this fight. Also mimic is a huge help in first phase. awesome guide 👍
I actually considered doing that before i saw this video. You can get through it without respecing, but you have to dodge 70% of his attacks in the first phase. Took me about 10-20 tries until i finally did it (after watching the video). But that was without mimic, and im not really good tbh.
What I found useful for the second phase timing is that you press your weapon ability when you hear the first thud when he is resetting. There is 2 thud sounds after each time you blast and stun him
If you want a super easy way of beating this boss, do this same strategy and spam your fp ability, but also summon the mimic at the start, it always full aggro and the serpent is getting hit by 2 of the spears at once.
You can literally kill him using only charge attacks on both phases. Just need to memorize the timing. Equipping an Axe talisman that enhances charge attacks it's also a good choice.
For anyone up to date, this barely works now. You still stagger, however the casting is slower, so that you're unable to constantly stagger. 1st half is very easy. I 2x hit, and back off, then when it's down 3x heavy, and a single attack. Still stuck on the 2nd half

If you have this weapon equipped, equip also the mimic tear ash & level that up. It will spawn an ash of yourself with your gear, making it light work.
Dude amazing tutorial! I was struggling with this boss with my mage build, but i beat him after watching your video. In second form even if you get hit you can still stun lock him with the heavy attacks. Amazing video man, congratulations!
If you have a decent amount of FP, by using the serpant hunters default weapon art (which is a charge strike that consumes a bit of FP) you can very easily cheese this fight during both phases without taking any damage. Each strike will break his poise and he'll be left vulnerable for another hit, again and again. I was really surprised at how easy this fight was considering the specitical of it all.
good to know i could've made that first phase even quicker haha. i saved the weapon art for the 2nd phase without realizing my faith build has waaaay more FP than in the video
The mimic tear was overpowered for me in this fight. It just went in taking all the damage and distracted him whilst damaging him a bunch. 10/10 would use again
If you have trouble getting the timing right for the second phase L2 attack, when you do it the first time, notice the right leg go up when it gets staggered and then puts it down, when the boss puts the right leg down after being staggered is when you do the attack again and continue
I've tried every variation of this and it just doesn't work. I've tried right before his foot hits, tanks the hit, and then the next one, and then the next one. Tried it as it hits. Same deal. Tried it a little bit after it hits. Same deal. I may as well just be using the second half of the special because he's surviving by a few hits anyway. This stun tactic seems genuinely impossible, coming from a rhythm gamer with good timing. Edit: he literally tanked 4 of the specials in a row before staggering backward. I'm not using the second half. This doesn't work after the first stun.

I'm towards end of game and going back and doing some earlier stuff and grabbing levels ...no reason to force yourself to do stuff under leveled
first boss in any soulsgame I'm going to cheese, literally 5 deaths in I knew this boss is dumb af so fuck it. Also the fact that it's not letting me respawn at the marika and I have to run all the way back while waiting for lifts and bs is pissing me off lol
Thanks good guide. Tried this but 2nd was hard, Figured out for 2nd phase start with you go 4 step near boss Spam ability and go three step back evry time after ability spam and FP refile, repeat. Fair gap between boss is must for the boss dont attack you in his range.
You can very much fight him the entire way of the battle like you did for the 2nd half. Never gets a hit in. Wait for your stamina to top up while taking a step back or forward (depending on his lava base) then L2 double handed with the serpent spear. Repeat over and over.
More tips if your struggling I just beat mine yesterday. You can actually upgrade the spear you get at the blacksmith. Also during the first phase its better to stand in the lava and spam right trigger standing as close as you can to the boss. For the second phase you have to get lucky stunning the monster using the left trigger ability with perfect timing when the right hand touches the ground hit left trigger, so the boss cant fight you.
I found a way to get the timing right for the stunlock, wait for his left hand to touch the ground after the stagger, then you begin charging your L2. Works 10/10 times.
I think this might have gotten patched, but a trick I used was just to run right next to him and spam R2/RT. He didn’t hit me a single time and I only had to heal to stop the lava under him from killing me.
As of now. This doesn't work for the first part of the boss. But it works for the second part. It worked best for me when I didn't lock on and aimed at his general direction. Watch the hand. As soon as he puts it on the floor, wreck him.
Played this game a lot and got very far. Got to this boss and was stuck so I came to this video. Still died a few times, got pissed and ripped the plugs out. Cause ya know that's what happens with these souls like games. Well I made IMMENSE progress... And well the assholes at the company disabled the save so all progress is lost. Almost 10 hours. Not sure what the issue is but in his second phase when I stun him , I can’t get a flask off in time. He uses a weird quick attack that hits me before I can get the skill off.
I've had it happen once to me, thankfully managed to dodge it and kill him. I think it's because you drank/attacked too late. Just spam the heal button as soon as he's stunned and your FP bar is empty, spam the ability right after you finish drinking because by then he'll have recovered.
@@autumnleaf45 I fought him so many times I was pretty much able to not get hit the entire first phase most of the time. If you stay really close he won’t use that earthquake move very often and if he does the only thing that you can really do is block and take reduced damaged . Make sure you are using mainly jumping heavys to attack
Another much easier method I found was just equid fire resist armour and run right up to him, you take minimal damage from the fire, and each R1 for me did about 1400 damage. This actually avoids basically ALL of his attacks in both forms, even now and then he'll shake enough to do about 1/3 of your health, but you easily have time to heal. I tried a load of times using the long range strat, and just got angry and ran into his lava finally and did it on the first try as he just can't hit you.
You're amazing dude, i died many times in first phase, dude second phase one try with my hp at 50% One thing that helped me is the talisman that reduces the cost of skills: Carian filigreed crest

This worked too good, I was just seeing what the sword could do and then it died... but I did upgrade it at round table first then I spawn on grace point next to enemy. It's too easy.

Theres a delay anyways between attacks you really don't have to wait.... I ended up getting him some of the time trying to space the l2 attack

Phase 2 strat isn't working, I time it perfectly but at around 40% health he uses a quick attack that screws up the whole combo
Took a couple tries but I got to the point where I could get him to “stand still” strategy worked amazingly.

another thing that help is that you can at least +5 the god serpent killer spear to make your dmg even higher against him

For anyone wondering, the magic ray only works when fighting the boss. Level up with Somber stones, use mimic tear, keep distance, light work.

One good tip for second phase is use the skill attack when his right foot slams the ground after the hitstun. That would keep the cycle going.

Not sure what the issue is but in his second phase when I stun him , I can’t get a flask off in time. He uses a weird quick attack that hits me before I can get the skill off.
I've had it happen once to me, thankfully managed to dodge it and kill him. I think it's because you drank/attacked too late.
Just spam the heal button as soon as he's stunned and your FP bar is empty, spam the ability right after you finish drinking because by then he'll have recovered.
@@oldshoes4290 that’s what I’ve been trying but I noticed at right around 50% no matter what he gets off the triple bite attack .

@@autumnleaf45 I fought him so many times I was pretty much able to not get hit the entire first phase most of the time. If you stay really close he won’t use that earthquake move very often and if he does the only thing that you can really do is block and take reduced damaged . Make sure you are using mainly jumping heavys to attack
Another much easier method I found was just equid fire resist armour and run right up to him, you take minimal damage from the fire, and each R1 for me did about 1400 damage. This actually avoids basically ALL of his attacks in both forms, even now and then he'll shake enough to do about 1/3 of your health, but you easily have time to heal.
I tried a load of times using the long range strat, and just got angry and ran into his lava finally and did it on the first try as he just can't hit you.

another way to use is use mimic and only equip the serpant sword i gotchu guys (it’s like double the damage)

mimic just destroys him, so much fucking easier

This worked too good, I was just seeing what the sword could do and then it died... but I did upgrade it at round table first then I spawn on grace point next to enemy. It's too easy.
