Puerto Penasco is on our travel list every Oct. We only bring snacks and drinks and buy our food to cook while there, shrimp, scallops and cook in camp. Great time every year.
I’ve always loved Tecate…Back in the 90’s I was in the Navy at Camp Pendleton and me and my friends would take the historic train from Campo to Tecate. We’d hit the Mercado and various shops before relaxing in the Plaza where we’d eat tons of tacos and wait for sunset! Been a long time. I moved back to my native Texas when I retired from the USN in 2000. A few years later I wrote a song called “Slow Train To Tecate”. Don’t be surprised if I figure a way to send you a sound file of it. - - “Ol’ Scooter” from East Texas…
My wife and I were just talking about taking a trip to Puerto Peñasco.. Thank You for sharing this. Sorry you had to go through the violence nonsense that recently happened but, overall, it seemed like a great experience with your family and an awesome place to visit.
Abuelito Marco, Mexicali is my birth home I live in the high desert in Apple Valley, CA for some years now we were neighbors many moons ago in our youth but for years now I see I could not risk going home because of the cartels you said it brother Baja was never like this it was fun, enjoyable my brother and I went scuba diving past Ensenada at the Bufadora with my parents (RIP) camping seeing your trip con tu Familia brought back memories...lovely wife & grandson Abuelos, hasta la proxima 🤠
I'm thankful y'all are safe. Keep your head on a swivel. Tough times coming north of the border in the.not so distant future. You take care of those kiddos!
Thanks for the memories of Puerto Penasco! I spent so much money at that fishmarket in the 80s I can’t count it. We used to trade suitcases of Budweiser for limits On the big blue scampi’s and other fish. We used to pull out on the sandy beach and just camp-there wasn’t a mega hotel in site… hope you made it over to JJ‘s Cantina for a cocktail…
Saludos Marco , como siempre disfrutando el excelente contenido que realizas , Para los que nacimos en la Baja y que amamos nuestra tierra nos resulta muy triste como se han puesto las cosas , espero que pronto cambie la situación
We were there 8/20-8/24 we were mildly aware of violence prior to going but not really overly concerned. We entered at the Lukeville border. There was absolutely no one there and we had the beach and the resort amenities to ourselves! Thanks for sharing your experience.
Marco thank you for the great video. I was really excited to see you did a video about this area as I am hoping to do a short trip there myself this winter. I hope that the situation improves.

Highway 2 between San Luis and Sonita was in my opinion the most dangerous road I've been on in Mexico. The truck drivers are pretty crazy on that stretch and will pass in dangerous places. My wife is from San Luis. Pretty cool to see you go through this area.

It has happened twice recently in Caborca about 50 miles from where you are in this video but I bet you already knew that. I love Sonora, 10 trips/year to Rocky Point for the last 15 years. 20 years total experience in Sonora. Mostly Puerto Penasco but also Santo Tomas and Puerto Lobos to the South. San Luis RC a few times in the 06 Calderon War era... no issues. Wrong place at the wrong time kinda thing is what I worry about. Being targeted? Never. But recently in Caborca the block has been hot. Twice they've lit gas stations on fire and all hell broke loose in the last year or so. You guys are lucky to have Baja. Mainland frontera region is a different BEAST!
After seeing you and Brad on his channel, I subscribed to your's too. I'm a foodie and love your menus and set ups. I drive an F-150 with a Hawk pop up camper. Nice shots. Gas at Ensenada Costco is at a high of 19.85/liter for regular-- used to be 19.65. Moved down here last November from California, 2 miles up the hill from La Bufadora-- beautiful area. Enjoy watching your videos-- keep up the good work.
Thank you for the video and local insight - it's just sad - was planning a run to Rocky Point in a month or so - putting it on hold -- The Boss told me we are now going to Hawaii. Stay safe and keep exploring.
It was a few hours. No need to cancel a trip. I wish @OVRLNDX whould not have given his opinion not to go, esspecially as he also admitted that he had no specific knowledge of the situation.
Un abrazo y keep the videos coming!
Glad everyone made it home safe. And you mentioned the price of gas at about $4.61/ Gal for 91 octane. Which is not bad considering here in interior Alaska we are running $4.80/gal for premium (90/91) at the cheapest place in town (Costco).
Great video brother. We we’re down there at the same time, but come from Phx. Heard about the bs after we arrived. Go down very often, never have issues, hopefully that won’t change. If you can send me that ceviche recipe. Looks great. The not often seen rain was really nice. Let’s fish.
Love Mexico! Vacationed five times there (3 cruises to Ensenada, 2 flights to Cancun). Never drove to Puerto Penasco, but it's so close to Phoenix, I don't know why I haven't? Maybe one day. So glad your family had a great trip, it looked wonderful! Keep living well, my friend! Pete - KI7LIL
Great video I really want to go to Cabo San Lucas this year but with what is happening I don’t know when we will be able to. I also want to visit Puerto Penasco, a lot of friends have gone out there and say it’s a nice place to visit. We are also having problems on the other side of the border, I am from El Paso, TX. Last week Juarez was having problems again with the cartels as well which is unfortunate. I am glad you and your family made it back home safely. Take care.
Hello Marco, WOW, I’ve never been to Mexico. The scenery along that dangerous roadway was amazing, love to see it someday… My wife’s been trying for years to get me to Mexico. While living in Arizona we were only 40 miles distant, now in New Mexico we’re 52 miles away. I guess I’ll have to plan a trip as I’d like to see some different scenery. I’ve seen reference to a place called Durango in Mexico where a lot of westerns were filmed, the scenery is very rocky perfect for the iconic western movie set… I absolutely love your Jeep, it’s capable of taking you so many places. To bad the unsavory element had to cut your trip short… Safe travels
We have always had a good time in Mexico. Friendly people for the most part and a very picturesque country. Sad to hear and see that there is trouble there but glad you all made it hoe safe. The sand drifts are like our snow drifts up here! Cheers
Trouble is everywhere in this world.this past weekend just in Chicago there was 48 shot 8 killd and no arrest ,and I'm sure u don't know because the USA don't anounce it.in mexico they burnd 15 cars ,military arrived by sat it was back to normal.im in rrosarito .and was in rrosarito when the USA was saying not to come .everything was normal.its all político. Live ur life with no fear
Very sad to see this happening.creci en el valle de Mexicali y a los 13 años me sentia libre de andar de dia o noche.desde los 15 años vivo en California y por descinfiansa no voy tanto a visitar ...que pena.
The I-8 on the US side has its share of accidents going through those mountains. I haven’t been down there in 10-15 yrs, makes me sad to see some of the bad stuff going on.
Technically you are not in Penasco. Grand Mayan is about a 20-30 minute drive to town. Road isn't great either. Prices at the Mayan Palace are really expensive. FYI.
Hi Marco, an update on San Felipe. On Tuesday afternoon, the police chief, his deputy director and his commander were in a vehicle near the marina and they were ambushed by narcos. The deputy director and commander were killed. There were 8 men in two vehicles. Other police nearby returned fire and the men fled on foot leaving behind the vehicles, weapons, ammunition and bulletproof vests. One of the assailants was captured. RUclips deletes the link but you can find it at Paudal, Baja California: Police officers are ambushed and killed in San Felipe. My wife and I planned to head back to Mexico in two weeks but that's now on hold. Were we live is relatively safe, but we wouldn't go to town to shop or anything else until this is sorted out. We are also hearing they are getting shitty at the border. Someone we know was made to offload everting from their truck on the ground, things you normally would bring, and fined $250. Every truck with a camper shell is having to go through declare, etc. Right now I don't know what to think about all of this or whether there is a future there anymore.
I didn't hear about that and sounds like a bummer! I did spend 3 days in Mexicali last week and everything was great. But absolutely, if someone feels uncomfortable going to Baja, definitely don't do it.
Ok..so first minute? You need to fix that damn swinging microphone! Love your videos but...that would drive me crazy if it was in my truck.. it drives me crazy in yours! 😆
Marco muchas felicidades por mantener la union familiar da gusto que regresaran con bien, una pregunta la casa donde estuvieron es de renta o es tuya? Si es de renta cuales son los costos y en donde se puede contactar
haven't been to RP since the late 80's..only 2 bars on the beach (JJ's and the Reef), no condos, no ammenities, just a beach and a bunch of drunk gringos falling off atv's 😂 too bad about the sketchy violence, but what would a trip be without some excitement.. ?
He says this is the first he's heard of violence there. I lived in Mexico for 6 years across the Sea of Cortez and still do half the year. Mexican friends of ours visited Puerto Penasco 5 years ago just after a shoot out between the government and drug cartels. They told us apartment blocks were littered with bullet holes from machine guns and helicopters. The northern Sea of Cortez is also under the control of cartels fishing totoaba. Their bladders are sought after by the Chinese and sell for up to $8,000 each. They mostly keep to themselves but there are sometimes raids by the government and violence spills out. There has been an uptick in thefts where I'm at. Worse, not far from me an American was shot dead when he heard a commotion and went outside to find a group of men stealing his car. I know one of his neighbors, who a few months ago had their dune buggy stolen out of their garage while they were inside watching TV. Since the first of the year there have been several other thefts there and now a senseless murder. I'm sure it's weighing heavily on them whether they will go back. Mexico is a beautiful place and would be even more so if they could ever get it under control. We not only lived in Mexico year-round for 6 years we ran a business and are part of the community. I've never felt threatened but it's definitely not the US. There is no 911 to call. I've got not only about myself to think about but also the safety of my wife.
Bummer that you have experienced all that! Sorry! I have a business and a house in Mexico too and thank God I have never experienced that. People ask me if I recommend going to Baja on an overland trip, my response is NO, if you don't feel comfortable don't even bother, you won't enjoy it. I also don't encourage people to visit Baja and if they do, do it with someone like Camp4Lo, they know everything about Baja.
@@OVRLNDX It's there, maybe not around you or you don't know about it. In May, 2010 I knew of 2 suicides and 4 murders. Two were Americans who killed their wives (they think there they can get away with it there), the other 2 were local Mexicans shot dead. I was always skeptical about news reporting there so I tried searching for anything on those deaths and found nothing. Most crimes go unreported. The only news is Facebook groups. Those deaths and a few more since really didn't affect us other than the fact we knew about them. These latest hit a little closer to home. Just before we left in May a delivery driver we knew quite well from out of the area disappeared and is presumed dead. A real charming guy and a personal loss. Thanks Marco. Wish you and your family the best.

Great video Marco! Es bueno saber que están todos bien y no les pasó nada! Saludos!!
Gracias!!!
Thank you for the video and local insight - it's just sad - was planning a run to Rocky Point in a month or so - putting it on hold -- The Boss told me we are now going to Hawaii. Stay safe and keep exploring.
Oh man I'm really sorry! Hawaii ha? That suck. ;) (sarcasm) Lucky you!!
@@OVRLNDX I like Rocky Point - driveable and the food is (use to be) authentic ... guess I can suffer through a Hawaii trip.
It was a few hours. No need to cancel a trip. I wish @OVRLNDX whould not have given his opinion not to go, esspecially as he also admitted that he had no specific knowledge of the situation.
Looks beautiful. I want to take my Jeep to Mexico one day, but I want to go with people who know the area and the language.
You should! Mexico has a lot to offer
Un abrazo y keep the videos coming!
La verdad esperemos un mejor futuro con mayor seguridad. Saludos!
Glad everyone made it home safe. And you mentioned the price of gas at about $4.61/ Gal for 91 octane. Which is not bad considering here in interior Alaska we are running $4.80/gal for premium (90/91) at the cheapest place in town (Costco).
Thank you so much! I guess fuel prices are high everywhere
I just gassed up at the Fairbanks Costco last week. It was $4.35/gal for regular.
@@monaezytwo6513 Yes, I was referring and comparing to premium prices (what Marco mentioned in his video).
Super cute grandson! Not like you can take credit for that 😉
So true! LoL! Thank you so much!
Tostadas look fire!!!
Thank you!!
Great video brother. We we’re down there at the same time, but come from Phx. Heard about the bs after we arrived. Go down very often, never have issues, hopefully that won’t change. If you can send me that ceviche recipe. Looks great. The not often seen rain was really nice. Let’s fish.
Sounds good!! Its such a great place!! Recipe is here ruclips.net/video/3eb-hRin_RE/видео.html
Thank you so much Peter!
Take care.
Thank you so much, it's definitely a trip that requires planning and research.
Hello Marco,
WOW, I’ve never been to Mexico. The scenery along that dangerous roadway was amazing, love to see it someday…
My wife’s been trying for years to get me to Mexico. While living in Arizona we were only 40 miles distant, now in New Mexico we’re 52 miles away. I guess I’ll have to plan a trip as I’d like to see some different scenery. I’ve seen reference to a place called Durango in Mexico where a lot of westerns were filmed, the scenery is very rocky perfect for the iconic western movie set…
I absolutely love your Jeep, it’s capable of taking you so many places. To bad the unsavory element had to cut your trip short…
Safe travels
Thank you so much man!!! You need to visit Baja for sure!! Specially the southern part, along the peninsula its beautiful!
@@OVRLNDX thank you for the advice on where to visit. I’m retired and now a landscape photographer thus I just want to travel and see new places.
That sprinter is nice.
It is! It’s my daughter’s
You definitely know how to roll.
You Rock! Thank you
Same here i was down in rosarito visiting my pops cuando se puso caliente la cosa 😬 ✌🏻👋🏻
Pero en realidad no fue tan grave, no?
@@OVRLNDX si ya be como se las avientan las noticias era nomas viernes en la noche y lo iso que era todo el fin de semana 🤦🏻♂️pero todo tranquilo
We have always had a good time in Mexico. Friendly people for the most part and a very picturesque country.
Sad to hear and see that there is trouble there but glad you all made it hoe safe.
The sand drifts are like our snow drifts up here! Cheers
Thank you my friend!
Mala onda verdad?
It looks like you guys had a fun vacation! I'm curious why the beach had so few people. Cheers-
Thank you! we asked one of the resort's worker and he thinks is because students were back in school that week. Maybe
The I-8 on the US side has its share of accidents going through those mountains.
I haven’t been down there in 10-15 yrs, makes me sad to see some of the bad stuff going on.
I have travel the I-8 east every week for the last 20 some years for work! Never gets old right?
Viva Baja!!! And how can you go wrong with a fish market named Marcos
LoL!! Love it! Thank you!
We need to set a trip to visit the WHALES at GUERRERO NEGRO next year!
Heck yeah!!!
Technically you are not in Penasco. Grand Mayan is about a 20-30 minute drive to town. Road isn't great either. Prices at the Mayan Palace are really expensive. FYI.
Yes! Mayan is expensive! Thats why I don't stay there
Chulada en puerto peñasco Marcos cuando vienes a colorado?
Acabo de regresar de Loveland!
I wish I felt safe enough to travel into Mexico. .. I don’t know Spanish either so that’s an issue too. 😂
Hopefully in the future things will get better.
I think I saw you going in to the City hall in Tecate, about a month ago.
LoL! Yes!!! Have to pay property taxes! :)
Saludos.
Hope to meet you in sema 🙏
I hope so!! Thank you!
No llegaste por el pan marco ✌️
No llegue!!
Awesome video! I'm wrestling with the idea of buying a trailer to pull with my 2021 JLUR. Mind if I ask what you're pulling?
Thank you! Off road trailers are awesome! I have a Patriot Campers!
Marco, ¡Me encantan tus gafas de sol! Dónde las consigo?? Fan boricua por acá. Saludos desde Colorado.
Muchas gracias!!! Son las LowDown Steel de Smith Optical! Saludos
@@OVRLNDX Hombre, muchísimas gracias! Están chulísimas. Digo, al menos para viejos gorditos pelones como yo. 😎
Next time stop by " las costillas de Joel" recommendadas..

Still haven’t found a fix for the microphone ?
LoL! I keep forgetting to fix it!
Ok..so first minute? You need to fix that damn swinging microphone! Love your videos but...that would drive me crazy if it was in my truck.. it drives me crazy in yours! 😆
hahaha!! I was waiting for the mic comment!! I know! I hate what i did there! i will fix it soon!

Great trip ! Is a permit needed in Mexico to go to Rocky Point ?
No permit required but i do recommend Mexican insurance
@@OVRLNDX thank you sir ! gracias 🙏
haven't been to RP since the late 80's..only 2 bars on the beach (JJ's and the Reef), no condos, no ammenities, just a beach and a bunch of drunk gringos falling off atv's 😂 too bad about the sketchy violence, but what would a trip be without some excitement.. ?
Absolutely! Puerto Penasco has grown a lot, its pretty nice to go with the family!
Marco where can I get one of your decals
I will have more, new ones soon!
Great gas prices
Could be better! LoL!
I hope you filmed this before the car fires...it's cray cray...be safe.
LoL!! I Did! Thank you!!
If you were worried about the Baja, why didn't you cross the border in Sonoyta and get out of Mexico? I like your videos, but this is odd.
Oh, my daughter’s and rest of the family did. I had to take my mother in law to Tecate.
Chaos? please.....theres far more violence in the U.S. than in México.
It depends on the news network. ;)
