How did I get to be 68 years old by breathing wrong. Seriously, very well presented, I've been walking around practicing this since I watched, and catching my self using the chest every time until I correct. One step before breathing however, is to remember to actually breath. When I get into a stressful situation, I tend to stop breathing, which causes other problems of course..

@@femkesliep9079 hahaha. I know exactly what you mean! I would hear often, (being a singer) "Breathe from your diaphragm" but didn't quite get the knack. Well, at least I know how to do it now. But it is still a bit odd as it seems more natural for the chest to expand rather than the belly. Although, being conscious of diaphragmatic breathing now, it certainly has pointed out to me just how much of a shallow of a breather I have been so, that's good. Plus, I can really "belt" out a tune better now. heh heh.

I know just about everyone teaching breathing techniques teaches in this way but this is still not correct, far from it. It sort of does the job and gives a deeper breath than the shallow upper chest/shoulders version, but it's taught this was by people who actually seem to have no idea and done so because it's easy for people to do. 'Easy' does not make it right and the correct way makes perfect sense. Having taught somewhere between 2500-3000 people breathing over the last 25 years I can tell you that not a single one of those people could ever breathe properly and that includes professional athletes and swimmers yet they still didn't actually know what they were doing.

The most effective way for you to learn to breathe would be to search videos on simple pranayama techniques, yoga breathing, of which there are a great many. Learning to breather correctly and efficiently involves changing a lifetime of breathing habits, it’s extremely complex and requires tremendous patience and daily practice but is perfectly possible. As I always say, practice every day for 4 years, miss a day you have to start again. All the best

I've been trying to breathe properly for singing for a long time and always wondered whether I was doing my breathing exercises properly but could never tell for sure when not being in front of the teacher. Shenanigans! The video was neat and the trick is super helpful, but I'm calling shenanigans on the jump scare contrast demo.
There are several differences between the two jump scares that cause the second to be less frightening, and the first moreso.
Firstly, the scares' placements amongst the dialogue vary significantly. The first starts abruptly mid-sentence, out of rhythm with the pace of the sentence (a split second sooner than the expected next word). This causes the first to sound more abrupt, not just because its timing makes it more unexpected, but because the volume of the jump scare is in clear contrast to the quieter dialogue we were in the middle of hearing. The second jump scare's sound is far more isolated, and doesn't preempt the continuation of the calm sentence we were expecting to finish in the window of time in which it popped up. I've included an audio graph demonstrating this here: i.imgur.com/PeZLtFO.jpg
Secondly, the jump scares consist of three things. The video, the man's scream, and the tiger's roar. The scream in the first clip begins much sooner than in the second clip (almost 1/3 of the time in, 0.5s vs 0.14s). We've evolved to enter fight or flight mode at the sound of another human being screaming like there's a tiger in our face, so it makes sense that being more unprepared for that would startle us a fair bit more. You can see when the shout begins, where the yellow ends in this second audio graph: i.imgur.com/RSLrWnK.jpg
Lastly, while both jump scares snap in from nearly black frames before them, this is the first frame of the first jump scare: i.imgur.com/bJir0yq.jpg (1:09)
And this is the first frame of the second jump scare: i.imgur.com/cIeaVvu.jpg (5:25)
As can be clearly seen here, the tiger is more central, nearer, and already leaping toward the camera in the first, wheras the second is farther from the camera and hasn't yet leapt toward us. Further, the "#needlessjumpscares" hashtag dead center in the second serves to distract, redirecting our attention, giving our brains something else to process rather than just "TIGER IN FACE!".
In summary, the first jump scare is sharper and more jarring, whereas the second is more isolated and more slowly accelerating. Sure, the breathing exercise has calmed us a bit more by the time the second one pops up, but that's not the only factor in play here!

I've been breathing wrong for most of my life, but there's another issue I would love to fix & that is how would I fix a monotone voice. I am very prone to sounding monotone. Even when I AM making an effort & THINK I'm being expressive. I get people asking me why I talk like a robot & when I consciously TRY to sound expressive when I speak, it sounds inauthentic & somehow amateur!! And I get told I sound false. Are there any good strategies that may help me to get rid of monotone voice without sounding false? I would be very greatful if you could post a video about it.

Hot take, that's probably because you're not used to it. It felt super uncomfortable for me when I first started breathing like this, mostly because I held a lot of tension in that area. At first it felt unnatural, but as I started doing it more, it became easier and I became less stressed, which lead to less tension which in turn made it even easier. I could be wrong but I'd urge you to keep trying if it feels weird, unnatural or too tight at first.

Imagine an accordion pulling the air down FOR YOU; collecting it in a sideways fashion. Keep the jaw and tongue completely relaxed before you start your breath (always)! Now start the slow sideways draw of air.

....yes but that's only a part of the story and not entirely correct. They teach you that because it makes it easier but proper inhalation does not necessarily happen by itself. Yes, some inhalation will naturally take place but you can't simply go around all day 'breathing out' and relying on the reaction to that to get air into the lungs. People can't breathe correctly, I've never met a single person who can and I've been teaching it for 25 years. People must retrain their breathing habits which for most people is a very difficult thing to do.

The people he is crediting it to didn't come up with this. A Jewish rabbi was teaching this method and wrote it down in the late 1950s named Aryeh Kaplan. I don't think he claimed to be original in it either. I can't remember whom he wrote taught it to him. And I no longer have his early book explaining exactly what's in this video. His final book on the subject written in the late 1970s "Jewish Meditation" has a page on exhaling in meditation prior to inhaling. Not that multiple researchers couldn't have come to the same conclusion independently, just that this is very old.

Where I learned it is the Accent Method. Not sure anyone has a patent on it.

This is helpful for relaxation, but for singing expansion of the rib cage, including the back ribs is important to get full expansion and support.

sorry to say i very much disagree, i am a somatic psychotherapist who works with breath. what you label as wrong is correct but incomplete . breath is initiated indeed by the exhalation but an exhalation that tips the pelvis back to do so. the in breath is initiated by the tipping forward pelvis that fills the belly as far as it will, THEN the rib cage and clavicle muscles can go to work doing their job of filling the upper lungs. the lungs reach up farther than most people know. try it and feel the extra oxygen. be well.
