I've lived in Bangkok for 13 years and while Lumphini is a place where you're guaranteed to easily see water monitors, you can see them all over the city, espcially along the canals or the river. When my parents visited I took them to the park and my father was convinced we wouldn't see any monitors, since it was December. He was pleasantly surprised. In another area of Bangkok I saw a monitor swim out and start lunging at fish. One time in Lumphini I saw one grab a pigeon and eat it. There are also skinks, iguanas, and of course house geckos and tokay geckos, along with various snakes. Great city for lovers of reptiles. Also frogs and huge snails in the rainy season.

@@gojira9666 Yes. They are only about 20 cm perhaps, brownish-green colouring but some-mature males, I assume-have orange heads. I often see them sunning themselves on the palm trees of my building. There's also a variety called Garden Iguanas which are larger and a bright red or blue. Those I've seen less often.

True about water monitors! Been there, seen them in different places around Bangkok! It was my first time last year and I had AWESOME time watching them. Gorgeous creatures. I also noticed that I couldn't see turtles in places where monitors live, probably too dangerous for them.

As someone who's rescued over 20 squirrels or more per year during my I've decade of tree work,....I can agree to the pure psychosis squirrels will erupt into over food. The males will castrate each other, the females will straight kill anyone going after their food, but yet they will completely dip out on their young, the second they are even minutely scared, lol. But it's also why I love the 2 I've kept as pets!!! They are so funny and weird

Fun Fact: The water lizards have 3 names in Thai language, first one we called it 'Woranuch' which isn't common name to called them in our daily life. So, we called them 'Tua Ngoen Tua Thong' which means a fortune bringer instead, and the other name of them are 'Here' which is the most used swear word in Thai.

They are protected by animal preservation law in Thailand. About 5 years ago the population of this animal had reached 400+ in this park alone. The pond was too small to host their food source, fishes. So they were causing problems lurking trash cans, running for food from people. So the government had to transported some (about 100+ big ones) to the provinces. Those that you filmed were not closed to the Hugh ones that were there. They were almost as big as crocodiles.

As a kind remark from a local person like me, when I see you touch its tail at 4:36, be reminded that it's best for them that you don't get too near or try to touch them like this no matter how calm or ignoring they seem to be towards you. WHY? Because if they get annoyed or too scared and want to defend themselves by attacking you, you're going to harm them indirectly when news spreads that foreigners got injured by them. AND Possible results? Population control, limited living area, or in the worst case, evacuation of the whole population out of Lumpini Park to somewhere else, which also might not be safe for them. (You don't know how hysterical the local government/authorities can be, do you?) They have been living here for too long before you know of their existence, and we want that to continue, and they're safe here. (Not every area in Thailand welcomes these big monitor lizards, FYI.) SO If you adore them and be fascinated by them, keep off of them; this will only help secure their habitat in Lumpini Park.

Then to see one walk right up to you guys was also cool as heck. Thankfully, the reptiles there all seem to have a healthy enough respect of humans to not get overly aggressive towards the two-legged aliens who visit them each day. All things considered, I'm envious, as I now have another must-visit place on my bucket list :)

Having lived in Thailand for 8 years, I have learned there are a number of monitor types. The monitors in BKK parks are not the Veranus monitors of the Thai islands. Veranus grow to about 9 feet. They have a tail that can be used as a bullwhip, claws longer than any of my fingers, razor sharp teeth, and toxic salvia. They are like Komodo Lite. Both Lizard types are quick enough to hunt deer.

    • @sparrenburger2804
      @sparrenburger2804 Год назад +2

      Yes and no.
Of course in Thailand live several species of monitors. But the watermonitor is always the same subspecies, Varanus salvator. macromaculatus. Macromaculatus is the whole mainland Asia. Yes they can grow in theory over 3m with a weight of maybe 20kg without to ve eaten . Usually is over 2m and 2,5 is a big old one.
The others are Indonesia - s. bivitatus, Andamanen - s. andamanendis, Sri Lanka is the nominate-sprices and tongian Island is s. ziegleri.
But the situation is still a mess and needs research look at Sulawesi.
But what I wrote was from Ziegler genetically verified few years ago.
Compare that with other top predators.
Sit so close to a wild lion. Yes huge claws and for sure they are no puppys but look here, no attack.
Don't do that without knowledge, of course.

Working on a Dallasaurus reproduction mount, it is nuts how similar Varanids are to Moasasaurs. Even the largest, if you ignore the flippers, it's the same animal.

I was just there a few days ago. Monitors are almost everywhere and are very easy to see. Also, there are many stray cats in the park.

About 10 years ago the park authority thought they were too many of them in the park. So they decided to catch some of them, about 400 if im not mistaken, to one of the national parks in other provinces. IMHO, maybe its time to do that again.

I wish I knew about this in 2006 when I was in Bangkok, I would have spent hours there instead of going shopping. Every monitor lizard I have found I had to chase to catch them or use a special trick for lacies (Varanus varius) which saved a lot of energy. I wish my very tame lacie whipped me that gently. I used to have to block my face when he was on the walls of the enclosure, but when he was on the ground I could just pick him up/

The behavior of animals will indicate the environment of that society. Most Thai people have love and respect in every aspect of life. 🙏

During the rainy season when then water levels in the canals and river get really high, when it floods the monitor lizards can literally appear from storm drains anywhere.
