    Those shovels are gold. I bought four and gave two as gifts years ago. They are heavy compared to any other folding shovel, which makes it a better chopper. Seriously overbuilt and durable. I made a sleeve to fit over the handle out of a piece of stainless exhaust tubing with slits on each end and some gear clamps. Now, I can clamp it down tight, and put a branch clamped in the other end for a full length handle if I choose. Pipe doubles as a container with plugs in the ends for small or fragile gear.

    I like the tools you have in your kit and especially the axe you have. It has been awhile since I saw an axe like that one and it is German and older. They made them during WWII and issued to their troops and still being issued to their troops. I am just planning on buying a hatchet to do the work of an axe, and hatchet also. Once I have all the tools I need I can get ready for my camping trip.

    @greatscott6755 7 лет назад +2

    Nice kit. I carry a Bellota, Columbian made machete which I pimped out with a leather & copper sheath. Gets a fair bit of work.
    Entrenching tool is something I will upgrade, I can get those German style ones at the Army Disposals in Cairns. Like you my tools receive regular use which means I have to gather, clean, sharpen, oil & pack when I want to go somewhere. That's the point of having tools right?
    I do the same with my gear, I stripped, clean & customise it, my favourite finish being timber & metal oiled & waxed, especially if it has age to it.

    Great video SSgt. I have a cheap generic version of the Rambo knife that I keep in my kit bag. Unfortunately because it's made of carbon steel instead of stainless steel I have to keep sharpening it after each use. Next piece of tool kit on my list is an actual decent size axe and shovel that can be carried on my bug out bag.

    I haven't seen one of those old West German shovels in ages, the Chinese actaully do a decent copy but it is hands down one of the best folding shovels available. The originals are getting pretty pricey and hard to come by.
    Myself I just use the little SOG tri fold, my Ames made in 91 or my Cold Steel if I pack a shovel.

    There is thin long metal strips that is flexable that you can roll up that you can use to wrap logs in an X pattern and tap in a nail to form walls roofs and floor and raised beds with. Long term beats lashing wood screws even better. 😁

    Have you done any videos with the idea of some of the ways of using the spray on Flex Seal to waterproof walking/work boots, use to keep wooden handled tools from slipping when striking wood, metal etc. By the way I love your leather works, I wish I had grabbed my Grand-dads leather tools and could make blade sheaths, belts, etc myself.

    one thing I would consider if doing something where you were away an extended period of time I would consider a chainsaw, log splitter and a single side heavy axe

    • @StepOneSurvival
      @StepOneSurvival  7 лет назад

      Jason howe 40 mile hike with a chainsaw full size ax and log splitter sounds like a great idea.

    • @jasonhowe1697
      @jasonhowe1697 7 лет назад

      the point of the comment was the case that it was going to a longer event where you might not return to your home where a disaster has taken place and the requirement make a shelter large enough to store you and family may be a requirement where the current tools you have would not suffice for that application, yes excess weight is a consideration though though consider a solution for a longer stay
      log splitters shouldn't be more than a couple kg's the axe shouldn't be more than 2.5-3.5 kg at max....
      something to consider is to be able to create a shelter that will be a more permanent deal...

    • @StepOneSurvival
      @StepOneSurvival  7 лет назад

      Jason howe that makes a lot more sense for a not coming back scenario. this bag is for a week trip. bushcraft camp building

    • @jasonhowe1697
      @jasonhowe1697 7 лет назад

      Step One survival fair enough what this is meant for vs the reality of survival is 2 vastly different scenarios if you are going to get into a proper tool kits for survival application this might be okay for week roughing in a tent though consider this if are going to consider the survival prepper mind preparing for a scenario where you would need to build something more permanent shelter..
      No matter how healthy we are, when we age out health goes south or north where it should be..
      There's only 1 option and it ain't bunking on the floor

  • @nonenone5667
    @nonenone5667 6 лет назад +1

    "bring stuff to build with", "stuff to catch food" = long-term sustainability. Means being 'Tool Heavy' and not Consumable heavy. However, for that Uber SHTF situation one MRE has its place. >>ONE

    • @nonenone5667
      @nonenone5667 6 лет назад

      actually, it doesn't have to be an MRE... just some kind of something that you can eat directly without cooking. Whatever it might be. As for long-term feasibility; that's something to work on. It takes a 'group' for long-term sustainability, community (INCH). We have 5 adults on our group at the moment. 5 adults with coordinated packs. Long-term tools that need to be carried, to affect the end-goal of a group bug-out; need to focus on food procurement and (durable) shelter building.

    the rambo knife....
    ahh....i had several.
    unfortunately...there are inferior imitations. and the size of the early ones i had was impractical. the idea however i thought was great.
    i seen a few recently still being pushed by imports. today i would carry one....but i dont think there is one actually made to high quality and practical specs.
    size....material requirements and practicality.
    but i had a few.
    They drew first blood!
    but rambo...u was supposed to have been prepared and seen that coming.....u mean they dont teach u intuitive knowkedge in basic combat and foraging?
    johnny rambo.
    i blame billy bad ass.
    johnny rambo and billy bad ass.
    what a combination.
    maybe one day theyll get there act together and make a decent survival knife.....and quit pestering the sherrifs dept....by loitering and sitting on a street corner begging for booze money.
