  • Khanuyak Dance of Tinglayan, Kalinga is a community dance. The sound is pre-recorded and the video is made to represent the different kinds of Igorot Dance. It was released on limited numbers on CD here in Baguio City a year before I uploaded the video and was never uploaded on RUclips.

The music and dances of the Kaigorotan are simply dazzling and mesmerizing! The music and dances are almost PURE . . . almost no external influences. Probably because they are almost isolated up in the mountains of the Cordilleras!
Their music and dance dynamics grew out of their deep desire to heal, worship ancestors and gods, pray for positive outcomes of war, harvests, and weather. Like any other group of people, our bothers and sisters in the Kaigorotan sing and dance to ward off misfortune, to celebrate the community, to socialize, to mark milestones in life and to express repressed feelings.
    Salamat po for sharing!

We continue preserving our culture, the thing is until now the misconceptions about us are still there. Thanks to my fellow Igorots even though you are in other countries you still brought with you your gongs and dances.

I had a friend who is a Kankana-ey before when I used to visit Baguio and La Trinidad. He told me the truth about his people. He said that their ancestors were dwellers on the wide plains of Luzon before. They were simply land tillers and workers of their own land until the arrival of other ribes, forcing them to run and hide in the mountains or forests. They no longer thought of going back to the plains until they were visited later by the Americans.

Clearly, the people in the mountains, far from the reach of the Spanish crown and the mission 'frailes', were the most fortunate in that they were able to best preserve their aboriginal cultural traditions better than those in the lowlands who had to succumb to both the mission and encomienda system. This is why today, people such as the Kalinga people can truly say they have continued the traditions of their ancestors and kept them alive- proudly.

Actually its not only the SLU Cultural Group that wears the bahag in the right way, it also includes the other schools here in baguio like, UC and UB. Well, they say times change and people change thats why some of us IGOROTS wear briefs together with the bahag. lolz

Marami po'ng gamit ang pagtugtog ng gangsa, hindi lang po para sa digmaan yan. Some Igorots use it for merry-making, communal festivities and death. For example, in Mountain Province alone, every linguistic group has one form or another of how they would perform pattong.

Although i am not from kalinga, but i think this is a wrong way of showcasing the the culture, for in this video, they are not the one who are playing the gongs, and they are wearing Brief with thier bahag/wanes/kuval/ba-ar. Ive been a performer for almost 5 years and to see this is such a dis appointment.. Stop modernizing our culture for the effect is the ignorant people will see our culture as just a "for fun" act..
