Killer Whales Beached While Hunting for Seals - Prince Rupert Adventure Tours

- These killer whales beached themselves while hunting for seals on a sandbar south of Prince Rupert. Captain Doug Davis and Debbie Davis went out to monitor the whales until the tide rose high enough for the whales to safely swim off the sandbar. What an experience to see these magnificent whales up close and personal. July 2011

@@judithkelley2701 I suspect they did in fact die in the end, probably from organ failure, exhaustion (severe difficulty in breathing). The video description is BS. At no point do we see the stranded Orcas swimming. In fact the slow incoming tide, low cloud and failing daylight, I very much doubt that any video was actually captured of these particular Orcas swimming away, this would've probably happened (if it did) later in the dark when the water was actually deep enough for the animals to get out.
The orcas are lucky they did not get to hear this music.

Why don't people read descriptions?
do you know the name of the music?
For anyone curious, these two orcas are identified as T123 “Sidney” and T123A “Stanley”. They are a mother/son family and are still alive and thriving in their normal range today. Another miraculous discovery about this stranding was that Sidney was pregnant with her third calf (her second calf did not survive to adulthood) during this ordeal. The calf was born the following year and is named T123C “Lucky”. Lucky is now ten years old and she is perfectly healthy. Since this stranding, Sidney has given birth to a fourth calf in 2018, little T123D “Darcy”. She is also thriving and the four are constantly seen in the Salish Sea to this day

The orcas just had to hang out for 12 hours and wait for the next high tide. Probably not the best feeling in the world but as you saw they were fine.

@Burning Tatortot not just with a few people, you’ll need machines to have a chance at bringing them back into the ocean
@Burning Tatortot plus you don’t think I know that?
@Burning Tatortot the ocean comes back to them, for some reason these 2 orcas did it on receding tide, once it turns back they can go back to sea. they are not large enough to be severely hurt by being beached however their skin needs to be kept moisturized and kind of isolated from the sun. if left by themselves they would have likely survived.
@@rodneya1828 This time the ocean is too far from them... Apart from being in danger of getting their skin dried by the sun, out of water their own weight will internally crush them because of gravity

A rainy day is perfect for them to get away unharmed.
They can stay on the beach for several hours as long as the skin does not dry out. It's not comfortable for them, but 6 hours should not be a problem.

This is cloder to accurate than you msy have intended. Orca are very intelligent animals, & pods' preys vary wildly. Here in the Salish Sea, most pods hunt mostly for salmon, in spite of a diverse selection of suitable fauna.
There is a pod off CA that specializes in hunting sharks for their livers. Their technique is complicated, passeed on by teaching, & so effective that they actively hunt full grown great white sharks.
The S American pods that take seals off beaches are specialized hunters & the ones who don't learn when to stop die.

The ones who posted the video also posted that the tide rose and the whales were able to swim back. So apparently they lived, which is why they played the happy music.
Gorgeous animal, but it eats seals, smaller dolphins, whale calves, and other smart animals without caring for their feelings. If someone had come, harvested them and fed a village of people, it would not be wrong. See how they kill a whale calf just to eat its tasty bits like its jaw and tongue while the mom whale cries, or kill a white shark just to eat its liver, or how it like to play with baby seals before eating them. I think killer whales are gorgeous and smart animal but it is also a vicious animal, and a couple of them dying and being eaten is not a big deal. That said they lived and they are also filled with mercury and other dangerous chemical so not the best eating.
I thought the same thing LOL! The "editor" should have put the happy music in at the point in the video the whales escaped, not over the entire video; sends a confusing message. #constructiveCriticism

To all the people thinking they should've pushed them: Stop. Take a moment and think. These animals are HUGE. You won't just be able to push them back in the ocean. If pushing will do anything, it's hurt them. Plus, judging from the video, the weather looks cold and humid, so it doesn't seem to me like the Orca's are in danger of drying out. And as you can see, they swam away unscathed without the humans interfering. Just let nature do its job and let these people be.

Yee McGee Nah. Orcas regularly beach themselves. These guys were stuck, but they only had to wait for the tide to come back in. Orcas are juuust small enough to not get crushed outside the water, and some even waddle up the shore with their flippers to surprise sealions. Their main issues would be overheating (not a problem here, since it was an overcast day) and predation, since theyre pretty much defenseless here. Which is why this group stuck around to protect them. :)
?Meaning thay did not die
Yee McGee That was my first thought?😢
Remember ORCA's are mammals they arent as vulnerable on land compared to fish.
TheSinisterEyes1 SOME fish. The orcas are so large their own organs can collapse under their weight. As for fish there are actually quite a few species that can traverse land for hours to days as a natural cycle with little ill effects.
The reason why whales can’t live on land is because their organs are crushed by their own weight. They need the sea to support that weight, which is why they can get so big. But at least the tide came in on time.
Yes for whales, but these Orca's are not whales, they are large dolphins and are not big enough for their weight to kill them. Uncomfortable yes, but not deadly. Now if it was a hot sunny day out, that is what could be dangerous for these Orca's.
I noticed the whale's eyes were bothering them. They kept squeezing them closed. Probably, the air was drying them out...
@@tonyharding6842 I stand corrected. Orcas are indeed a subspecies of toothed whales referred to as dolphins which include what we all know as the dolphin. So, to be scientific, what we all refer to as a "dolphin" is actually a small toothed whale. However I will maintain that while it might be a serious health crisis for an Orca to beach itself, it is obvious that these were full grown whales here that (in this case) seemed to weather their beaching without sustaining any injury due to their weight. They didn't seem to be struggling, and I suspect this wasn't the first time.
Wut about fish
The reason horses can’t lie down for long periods is because they too are crushed by their own weight and they only weigh half a tonne, perhaps a little more, absolute maximum. So There’s no question that orcas are definitely big enough to die due to organs being crushed.
The Orca was telling the other Orcas, " How did I let you get me into this crap, we're screwed ".
When the tide rolls in im gonna kick your ass for this
When that orca responded to that woman with a defeated sounding squeaeaeaeaea... I wanted to go dig a trench back to the water, or throw them over my shoulder and carry them to the water. Damn, that hit me in the feels!
@RPostVideos Red King Crab is fished in Vancouver, at depths up to 600 ft. Meaning those commercial crab boats must have 600 ft winch cables. You can get one of those w/in 200 ft of the sandbar, & run the cable out to the orcas using a smaller boat. Then just "tow" it back out to sea. Obviously, you can't have the cable itself directly in contact. Probably use 4"wide tow straps around orcas' tales. You can pull that off in 2-3 hrs.
They didnt die. This is almost common with orcas they get stuck during low tide but when high tide comes they can swim away. If its cloudy like in the video the orcas can survive 12hours in between tides easily

Some orcas love cheerful music in stressful situations.
It's fascinating that the orcas made the same noise every time a human spoke to them. I don't think orcas have complex language, but I think they do have calls that signal certain emotions or needs, this one being a sort of distress call.
They do actually. They have accents and dialects and are able to tell each other apart because of that.
@@synergyrevolution2332 You know what I meant. They don't have human level language. They have sounds that communicate a need or an identity, it seems, but they aren't capable of complex, abstract thought via their sounds.
To be honest, it's a little bit like a dog but more refined. Instead of just whining to express distress, it's a very distinct noise.
@@jamieohjamie Yeah true. Maybe their language structure is similar to that of canines because they do coordinate attacks similar to the way wolves do.
@@jamieohjamie Debatable. Many researchers believe their communication to be as complex as our own.

I'm really glad they survived.
Spencer Kissack yea
Thanks Amy. I have reoccurring dreams, about every 7 years, of looking into Killer Whales' eyes, and them communicating...what they have to say is not good
Why? Orcas are mean. They kill whales, seals, dolphins, penguins, walrus, etc..
so cats, lions leopards, birds and multiple other animals as well as humans are mean and shouldn't survive because we/they all eat other animals......
+BroccoliBeefed u live in the care bears world. wake up
Awe, their little squeals are so cute. Glad to know they were able to eventually swim to safety
They were literary crying for help what is cute about that
Is it cute when a human is screaming for help?
@@sullyfluff4823 oh my how lucky we are that they aren't humans right? Grow up, the sound is cute. Not the context

*orcas draws closer to inevitable death*
Editor: hmmmm lets play some upbeat music
they dont even die and you can see it in the video. are there only morons around on youtube?
Whales breathe air
It was a cold and rainy day, so they had nothing to fear.
It was a bit uncomfortable for them, but not really dangerous.
Orcas: Yuuuuuuuup. Its me. You're prooobably wondering how I got myself in this situation
That music is really weird 😒 its so irrelative
@extravagant I8 it's like rejoicing that these lovely creatures are dying 😑 smh
He kept videoing. Why not pour water tentatively and ask for rescue team to put them back to sea. What an idiot. Seriously
Ummmm you mean irrelevant?
ᴍᴀʀʟᴀʜᴏᴏɴ you do know how heavy an Orca is right? It’s not a simple just throw it back in the water, no big deal.
@freaky Friday I know. I was just being a dick😄
That must have felt like the longest time ever, waiting for the tide to come back up. Poor whales! I'm glad they survived.
Hurts to see them like that. 😢 (The music is WAY wrong for this btw!) Spent a lot of time in that area when growing up, and luckily this is rare. Poor beautiful creatures. I do wish people could understand how amazing Orcas are...they were begging for help. So glad they were able to return, praying they suffered no ill effects from it all, but clearly people were keeping them wet, which is one of the most important things.
Believe me...when you have a pod show up and visit you when you’re out kayaking, you fall in love and that love never leaves you. ❤️
I agree. The woman just watching. Not putting blankets on them. Sge literally was watching them die
That was T123 and her son, T123A! I’m so incredibly happy that they got back to deeper waters when the tide came back in! I love those two!
How come every orca lately is T123 and T123A, in every video that I watch. That's all people know are these 2 orcas
@@outoftime7740 Well I guess because they are very popular individual Bigg’s killer whales, and the stranding was videotaped, and since the T123’s are such a large family group, they got more attention. Not to mention Killer whales in the Pacific Northwest are well studied, and are very well known, Transients or Residents. But yeah there are a lot more Killer Whale strandings around the world, and throughout the PNW, that should get more attention
@@ellahicks2693 Residents are very well documented and known because they live their lives close to shore and basically in a small range. Southern Residents have been studied for decades because of their very limited numbers and being endangered. Northern Residents have also been documented as well, but these orcas have a larger range and not so easy to find them.. Transients don't stay local for very long. Transients are known for traveling over a 1000 miles, as their home range. And are also very hard to document and research. So I find it odd that every where I am seeing orca videos it's always the same 2 orcas. Resident orcas don't strand.
Well I take that back. The resident orcas off New Zealand, that live in a 200 mile range and have been studied by Ingrid Visser there for 2 decades, seem to strand the most. And that's because the orcas there,, only dine on sting rays. And sting rays will come to the shoreline trying to get away from the orcas. Ingrid has rescued these orcas ten times. She has videos of the rescues on YT that you can watch.
@@outoftime7740 yeah, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of Residents intentionally stranding, other than the Northern Residents that beach rub, but the Transients seem to strand a lot more. I think because multiple videos/clips were taken from this one stranding make it that much more popular.
Ik you were waiting for the tide to rise enough for them to be able to swim back out, but did you guys at least call local authorities or anyone? Pouring water on them and cool cloths and things to prevent them from drying out and over heating? Obviously the video is only like 3mins long, so maybe you guys just didn't show it? But I hope everyone didn't just stand there taking pictures and videos and watching
I knda worrying that too😥
But isn't that interfering with nature?
They ended beached while hunting for seals, that's natural selection and authorities does not intervine in those cases
It was raining (as you can see in the video), so there was nothing to do than scaring away seagulls (which could hack holes into their skin).

sea seals and literally every creature in the ocean: no, wtf!!!
@SUN OF GOD u r right!! we should love and protect after our ancestors literally drove most species to extinction and mostly not for survival purposes like hunting wolves and foxes for their fur!! but all this love for all species don't include mosquitos..Fuck mosquitos

Orca: Don't just stand there, get us out of here!
*High tide came*
Orca: Nevermind.
Wow, the one time these magnificent animals would be vulnerable to bears and wolves.
fablewalls didnt think about that your right
a bear sure, not sure a wolf would know what to do, or think its even food since its so large. Also, do wolves hang out on the beach coast much?. I truly dont know
Wolves and bears patrol Canadian beaches during salmon season so I don't see why not. As for size putting them off - doubt it very much.
I'd have a shotgun ready with enough shells to go around for any dumb predators who try to venture too close to these stranded whales on the beach lol. No bear or wolf would get close. 😈
fablewalls !!!!!!!
Orcas: “I knew I shouldn’t have devolved those legs.”

😭 they were crying...
🐳
No not crying, they were comforting each others.. More like "you ok" or "I'm still here".. Their very intelligent, some times during mating seasons they like to get away alone together and go into shallow water for privacy.. They lose track of time and get caught at low tide.. The younger ones tend to do that
@@mjs6157 you can see th tears at 1:10
I understand your sentiment.. They may have been stressed. What i do know is their intelligent enough not not get caught at low tide again
Playfulpanthress there’s clearly no need for you to call him/her a moron and idiots.... it seems to me that your parents dont teach you manners?
@Playfulpanthress what's with your attitude?
I was like: DON'T JUST STANT THERE DO SOMETHIN >:V
me later: oh wait nvm the tide rose
They may still be at risk for permanent damage though as their bodies aren’t meant to be under so much weight and they are being crushed slowly over a long period. I’m very glad they made it though.
you can't fucking do anything your gonna push a 6000 pound animal killer whale shark to where? find the water here ______
I saw these in a video and had to google them to make sure they were okay. Orcas are so cute and I was worried they died stranded. Glad to see they survived 🥰
Orca: I can't breathe.
Human: Naaa, he's a killer.

It can breath but it is going to xie if its stuck on that beach
@@casualmannoobq Their lungs collapse because of their own weight on land. That's why beached whales can't breathe properly.

@@EasytheGoon it happens with time and especially with even bigger whales.

Nice fart pal
Imagine you’re drowning and some female orca comes up while you’re struggling and says in a baby voice ‘aw what can I do for u bebe?’
I can't believe nobody even attempted to pour water on them. They look so dry! :(
SilverFlame819 i know, so messed up. That's the first thing that came to my mind
Alright, so just because these guys live in the ocean does not mean they are unable to survive beached without a constant flow of water against them. They don't "dry" up. Besides, the blow hole is located on the top of the head which means that you may disrupt their ability to breath if your pour water on them.
Secondly, it was obviously raining. I mean, come on. If they did "dry" up then they would have that to keep them relatively wet till the tide came back in.
Lastly, its better and usually adviced as far as I know to let nature take it's course. In one of my previous comments on this post, I stated this as well, and somebody decided to interpret that as me saying "oh well they might as well die because you know nature bitches."
I mean as in these Orcas were in no immediate danger. They only faced the problem of their intestines being squashed due to their hefty mass, and the tide came back in pretty quickly, so that's not a problem.
These guys all returned happily to the water.
Looks like there are 2 people there what difference would 2 buckets of water make to them ?
It would be better than nothing.
Obviously, other than nice people, this area is not prepared to take care of beached whales.
Strange background music for the scene I believe.
So, you just watched them for hours... how great of you...!!!
Yes ! I thought the same 😠 and then ask him was he want ?! WATER OF COURSE 😡

@@Mattinvent3 bruh the skin drys up
brussell639 not their orcas not their problem.
Easy to tell them to "put down the camera" while you yourself watched the whole video. Easy to tell them to "put some wet blankets on them" like your boomer home remedies are better than the wildlife experts in this video. But it's hard to go back in time to before you made this ignorant comment so I didn't have to read and reply to it.
@@Hanson032
Sure it's easy to say. But I can guarantee you that if I was there in person, I would have been doing exactly what I said they should have been doing. Keeping their skin hydrated with wet towels or blankets is exactly what the marine biologists recommend.
You must be sick in the head for the music choice.
Thiago Vidal exactly they probably wanted to watch it suffer sick people
Morons whales did not die you silly fools re description
@@bobdole6642 The video description is BS.
I suspect they did in fact die in the end, probably from organ failure, exhaustion (severe difficulty in breathing). The video is being disingenuous, the shots of those Orcas at the very end leaping out in clear, sunny weather are not of the stranded Orcas! Compare the weather conditions!

What good people you both are keeping them company. They thanked you by giving you a private thank you show. 😊
So sad, you could hear the distress in their vocalisations, so happy they survived. These beachings may happen more often than we realise, but like in the video most of the time they make it back.
