Man, this is one of the greatest examples of circular breathing demonstrated so beautifully by Harry Carney. That was true artistry. I play this song as a set closer, not nearly as well as the Duke and his men, but I keep trying. For KG!!!

no doubt, and it was the Duke's genius who even thought about voicing the baritone right out front of the horn section...i mean, who does that? but wow could harry coaxe some sweetness outa that bari
Without a doubt, the finest baritone sax solo ever recorded. I wish I could have witnessed the initial reaction of Gerry Mulligan, Pepper Adams, Ronnie Cuber & Steve Kupka after they heard this for the first time! It's a shame that the bari sax is such an underappreciated instrument for so long---When I bring mine on stage, people still ask me what the hell it is!
This was a revelation. And I’ve heard a ton of Ellington. What tone Carney had! Duke cared about two things. Swing and tone. You needed both to play in his band. Such elegant and timeless music. The Soul wrenching lyrics are always in mind as he okays.
Possibly the best bari sax solo ever played. If you close your eyes, he sometimes sounds like an alto and then sometimes sounds like a tenor. From subtone to throat growl, with impeccable taste, he even throws in circular breathing at the end! WOW!
I've listened to Duke since about 5 years ago, and the amount of people from my generation discovering Duke due to Big Mouth makes me happy to be a musician, and a huge fan of him. To you Duke, The one that got me into Jazz.
Garth Hudson's obituary led me here today, and this is definitely a beautiful song, thank you to all the legendary musicians , without them there would be no music today, R .I .P Garth Hudson
@@geraldjohnson4013... You put it as it should be put. One of my favourites is actually Canadian, LOL... genius Oscar Peterson but this drummer is American... and he is a genius... Dave Weckl.
I never really listened to jazz and never really listened to Duke Ellington and then big mouth came along and I started to listen to him and I realized that I always heard his music and never realized it was him.
Duke ellington es la cuna de mi Nostalgia, sus composiciones me llegan al alma y me hacen recordar cosas que nunca viví en el pasado, me pone realmente melancólico
Another one of Duke's great songs, Sophisticated Lady. Harry Carney compliments this haunting melody with one of the most "beautifully expressive" instrumental solos I have heard. Dan Damon (career musician)
I listen to this track about 20 times a month or so. I love this moment in time. I wish I could have experienced it in person. What a performance and what a group of wonderful talent. I can't get enough. In heaven I would love to meet all of these guys.
>>This sax "solo" is simply incredible. Harry is so smooth and phrases so sweetly that on at least 2 occasions I let out a noticeable sigh. The agility he has on this Bari is uncharacteristic of the instrument itself., he really shows us how it is done here. That 24bar long whole note shows that circular breathing isn't for digeridoo players only. So you see that this vid was so impressive that I took the time to comment on it. WOW !!! What virtuosity and control.
Thanks very much Ladies and Gentlmen for such a warm welcome. Your very Beautiful, very Sweet, very Gracious, very Generous, and all the kids in the band want you to know that we do love you madly!!! I love you Duke💖.
Omg! Is this the LONGEST note held in Music History!!!??? Many Props!! ♡ Even Duke was like, "Oh, Damn!" Amazing! Truly Beautiful! Just like my Mom. I Always said THIS SONG, "Sophisticated Lady" was written 4 my Mom. Truly Enduring Sophistication. The Greatest Generation...& I wasn't even a part of it!! Xxx♡♡♡ Live, Laugh, Love ETERNAL. ♡♡♡
Msflamingo2008 Circular breathing. Mark Pender of CONAN's Basic Cable Band does it on a weekly basis (as part of the show's warm-up). It takes a bit of practice.

I’ve always liked jazz, but I love that Big Mouth introduced me to Duke. He’s now one of my favorite musicians. Love all of his songs: “Take the A Train”, “In a Sentimental Mood”, “My Little Brown Book”(one of my favorites), “Haupe”, “Satin Doll”, “Mood Indigo” and many others!🙂
Honestly same, I love big mouth and I’m happy it brought Duke Ellington into my life. After the full episode around his life, yeah it was funny and there were a lot of jokes but I love how they went over his song for a sophisticated kind of girl, listening to it was lovely and I had to look into his music more 💚
Jlmusicfan57 dont you just wish you could go back in time and see the Duke live. I believe this and Mood Indigo are two of best jazz songs ever written.
What a fabulous ending with this circular breathing... wowh... where are these outstanding Jazz legends in our times ??? Seems we miss such personalities within the young and upcoming generation of musicians (maybe I am only in the mood of nostalgia ;-) and just missed to find the youngsters ). Tks for sharing...
Big Mouth brought me here, and I'm really glad it did
Hahah
Same lol
True music.
Same here
You're so sophisticated lady, lady!
After dark brought me here and thanks god 💘🎺

Ending on a ballad is brave! Are you or anyone in your band (unless you’re a solo act of course!) baritone players?
wonderful
Harry CARNEY had the most beautiful sound ever on a baritone , by far !!!!
no doubt, and it was the Duke's genius who even thought about voicing the baritone right out front of the horn section...i mean, who does that? but wow could harry coaxe some sweetness outa that bari

Yes, bari sax always be an underrated instruments by people who really don't appreciate music.
This was a revelation. And I’ve heard a ton of Ellington. What tone Carney had! Duke cared about two things. Swing and tone. You needed both to play in his band. Such elegant and timeless music. The Soul wrenching lyrics are always in mind as he okays.
Not too mention Hamiet Bluiett late of the World Saxophone Quartet (may he rest in peace with all the other great bari players).
Remembering my grandmother today today is her birthday & the Duke was her favorite performer & she was a sophisicated lady !
Hello Queen, How are you doing?
+ R.I.P.
Possibly the best bari sax solo ever played. If you close your eyes, he sometimes sounds like an alto and then sometimes sounds like a tenor. From subtone to throat growl, with impeccable taste, he even throws in circular breathing at the end! WOW!
And the circularly breathed note sounds like a viola 🤯
he makes the baritone a legitimate solo instrument. something I don't think it was even designed for.
And often it sounds like a cello. I knew Harry Carney well; the kindest man that ever walked the earth. This shones through in his playing.
Amazing circular breathing by baritone saxophonist Harry Carney.
A minute and 21 seconds! :)
wow how do you breathe circular
I was scared he would pass out.....
Carney’s amazing circular breathing starts about 2:21. Listen also for Duke’s beautifully understated piano obbligato.
Anybody else annoyed by it?
I like how the comments are divided by People who genuinely like his music and kids doing homework from big mouth xD
judging by this comment and your appearance you are a person whom also came from big mouth while also claiming you “knew” about him before.
by judging from these 2 comments i can tell you guys ate bitches and thou tis on no 🧢
Dallas Parker both

I've found a genuine like in doing big mouth homework tho

I had the honor of attending a Duke Ellington concert back in 1960 at the U of Chicago. It was an evening I'll never forget!
Big Mouth S3 bout to bring a whole lot of people here
Yep
And I'm here waiting for S4. 😂😂
I see you like the show "home movies"
Good sense of music brought me here
Amen
The Conversation brought me here
A vulgar Netflix cartoon show brought me here
Magico!!!!!
Haha at 3:18 even the Duke was like "Snap, that's one beautiful long note!" Amazing playing by Harry Carney!!
the brothers face is in the background is killing.. me like will you hurrup with this damn song
That's Johnny Hodges, AKA The Rabbit
As a former saxophonist, who was just learning circular breathing, I can say that what this guy's doing is amazing.
MAGNIFIQUE !!!!! Harry carney !!!!!!
Happy birthday Harry Carney (April 1, 1910 - October 8, 1974). He joined the Duke Ellington orchestra in 1927. Amazing breath control!
A baritone sax has never sounded lovelier. Duke is a genius!
Another favorite from the era.
Whatever you're doing right now, stand up to attention to this version of Soph. Lady. MAJESTIC !!
The UK has never discarded her love for jazz. Here in America we need to take note because jazz is a treasure.

Anakin Dey. More like : Bro. I'm done!

@@gagequinn4709 well hello
It's 3am and the dulcet vibration of Harry Carney's playing is the lull I need. 💜

So good and soo nostalgic 🫠😊
MAJESTIC... BEAUTIFUL... MASTERS... SUPER HUMAN HARRY CARNEY
SIMPLY SUPERB THANK YOU
I'm a drummer but since this performance by Mr. Carney I fell in love with the baritone saxophone. What an instrument
As I close my eyes and listen to this , it feels like I’m having a drink in some dim lighted bar and the year is 1965.
Thank you big mouth for bringing me here
Favoloso sax da brividi ...il duca e' sempre eccezionale
My own song brought me here lol glad it did salute 🫡 To the legend Duke
Man.. if i was born 30-40 years earlier i would have went to this concert, i live nearby!
It’s crazy how big mouth bring us all here.. I DON’T REGRET A SINGLE SECOND!!!
After Dark, Murakami. Nice...
Oh my god.. what a beautifull sound. This make me cry, on a good way.
I played bari sax in high school and college jazz band. Wow ... Harry Carney had the kind of sound I only dreamed of having.
My love for jazz brought me here.
Harry Carney was the reason why I play baritone sax thank you Harry rest in peace
I'm learning this on alto horn. Very interesting score. Many chord changes lots of accidentals! AABA. Beautiful!
Sophisticated and unforgettable Lady.....))
Speechless.....this is it.

Johnny "Jeep" Hodges is priceless in this video. :)
Hell yeah that was Harry Carney :) masterpiece recordings. This is one the unfortunately few tunes that belongs to the mighty big horn!

Sometimes you just know when you hear good music... THIS RIGHT HERE is good music
Duke Ellington the master. He lead a big band probably the greatest ever. This band contained many fine soloists. Duke composed with them in mind.
If I've learned one thing about slow jazz.. a perfectly stated sax solo can really bring a song together!
Harry Carney was probably the best Baritone sax player ever
3:15 Duke is like "Really? He's still going?"
3:19 "Holy shit, what is this?"
Jlmusicfan57 dont you just wish you could go back in time and see the Duke live. I believe this and Mood Indigo are two of best jazz songs ever written.
