In the early 1960's the Goodyear Tire Company commisioned 5 short jazz films. The programs were originally filmed in 35 mm negative. The sound was recorded in professional stereo. Presenting the band in full vigor.
Over the years, the prints faded to pink, because of an unstable color print stock. What was once an extremely professional, good looking endavour, now looked like the most out of date historic relic.
In the late 80s Storyville Films polished and remastered the original source material and sync'ed music to the images.
Finally these films were back to their intended quality and now stand as some of the most technically advanced of jazz films of the early 60s.
This clip was recorded in NYC, January 9, 1962
The players of the orchestra in these clips are:
Trumpet: Ray Nance, Shorty Baker, Cat Anderson, Bill Berry, Ed Mullens
Trombone: Lawrence Brown, Leon Cox, Chuck Conners
Alto-saxophone: Russell Procope, Johnny Hodges
Tenor-saxophone: Paul Gonsalves
Clarinet (and tenor-saxophone): Jimmy Hamilton
Baritone-saxophone: Harry Carney
Piano: Duke Ellington
Bass: Aaron Bell
Drums: Sam Woodyard

For a video to be almost 60 years old the quality is amazing!
Agreed!!
You know I was thinking the exact same thing while I was watching this!
If you read the descrption, it's because the film had been remastered.
@@wertj3977 Well they did a pretty darn good job of remastering. Kudos to those who did it.
Wow. I thought it was 1980.
“If it sounds good, it IS good.”
― Duke Ellington
My Dad named our cat Satin Doll after this, and met Duke Ellington in the late 60's or early 70's. He took a picture of him and got his autograph!
He wanted Lotus Blossom played at his funeral, which we did in 2013. ❤
Nice.
Very nice tune Played by Duke Ellington. I played it on my piano on my piano too.
@@whipchick90 it’s interesting to know that your Dad met Duke Ellington . They got close with picture taking & got his autograph too & the rest of the story of your Dad was focused on Duke Ellington!
Our parents took us to see Duke Ellington at Steel Pier in Atlantic City before the Casinos. It was so fantastic, I'll never forget it. He was at that time what we used to call a "cool cat" even though he was up in years. So classy, handsome and charming.
Yeah, I was there also, the Marine Ballroom all the way at the back of the pier. Duke Loved Us Madly.
So lucky
2:00 I’ve been a bass player for about 14 years and that is one of the tastiest bass fills I’ve ever heard
That's Aaron Bell, I think
No bass player but that was unlike anything I heard and actually has dynamics.
Yo I am also diggin how many frequent flyer (Greyhound) miles that bass has. Always touring and banging away at it.
Somebody please put that in sheet music
Do i have ear damage if I can't hear it? ._.
That bassist was cleaaann.
bassist: aaron Bell, an undersung genius, my old dear teacher. after leaving Duke's band he got a doctorate in composition from columbia university. first african-american to do so. passed up making "kind of Blue" to keep his broadway job to make $ for his first family ...
I'm ashamed I don't know more about Aaron Bell. I'm going to rectify that!
@@Markettinger Looks like a Kay bass, yes?
Good to finally see some video footage of Aaron Bell in action. He was my department chair for two years when I taught guitar at Essex County college in Newark NJ
2:23 when the band comes back in and Duke is doing that gangster-ass dance. He knew this shit was hot.
Papa Floga-Chungus this is one of the best comments I have ever seen
Lololololo@ Papa_Floga Chungus. I was checking that too. They were into it , great to see , and hear!😀
I just read he played so sparsely because he loved to listen to the band. He're he is just grooving. Never seen that before! Priceless.
This is definitely shot over an actual recording done for the broadcast, most big band stuff was recorded this way (especially for early big bands such as Ellington’s and Basie’s). Bass gives it away lol!
GANGSTER-ASS DANCE i die
My condolences to the 82 that gave this a thumbs down, your soul has left your body.
They were born without a soul.
The dynamics volume is the best part of this for me. No sheet music and no microphones. I didnt even see an amp for the bass
WOW
These were The Times
Sam Woodyard uses brushes throughout.
sirvalor in every jazz video
there's a condenser mic for bass
I didn't hear the beautiful drums I wanted because of that
Nothing says America better than its music. Another great example of it right here.
Music I remember, never be another
Most people will never understand. It is what is behind the notes. RIP Duke.
indeed indeed.
@@coolb1droid640 can you explain the above comment to me? behind the notes?
Careful. People may think you a snob. They will never understand.
@@lxuaes6915 I think he might be referring to the way that Duke accompanies his band
@@lxuaes6915 When it comes to music, most people only think about what it sounds like. Many people however don't think about the fact that someone took the time to write the music, and now it is art for us to enjoy. It's kind of like what makes a picture or painting great is that there is a story attached to it. Sorry if this makes no sense!
When popular music had class. Once upon a time, long, long ago.
ok boomer
fruity garlic Shut up, weeb
@@fruitygarlic3601 Today's music has so much class. WAP is such a classy song. Nicki Minaj's Anaconda as well.
People have found dirty humor funny, and sex appealing for literally forever. Duke Ellington himself had a song called "Something Sexual", and if you wanna REALLY blush do a little research on Lucille Bogan.
This feels targeted to something...
It doesn’t get much better than Duke Ellington and his band and Satin Doll! Truly an iconic band leader, band and song!! It transcends time!!
Will anyone ever create music like this again. They broke the mould with Duke Ellington. And those saxophones, magical.
Gotta love this music. Speaks to an elegance not often heard today.
No its apparently gone.
That bassist is absolutely shredding that bass as hard as he can to get the notes to come out lol
Love the Duke beautiful music and his happy smile
The quality of tone from vintage instruments is exquisite. That stand up bass wow. Not to mention the monster talent of each of those guys.
Duke Ellington has to be the most elegant man of all time
Love Duke Ellington his music is lovely❤
Yeah!... 🎵 🎶
How much of it was Strayhorn's music and NOT Ellington.

Beautyfull as gold
This song is a classic and my favorite Ellington tune. Great music transcends generations.
That is music,yes indeed,smooth,gentle,loving!!❤
This music 🎵🎶 reminds me of when I was a little girl, my Mama listening to Duke Ellington dancing in the kitchen cooking.💋🎵🎶
What incredible musicians. I wish music was still like this.
Sounds like the sky!
Fuck, it does sound like the sky.
Took my kids to Richmond Indiana the other day. All for the love of jazz!
So pleased Big Mouth has introduced me to the plethora of music that Duke left us.
The comment we were looking for
This has to be the best brass sections of all time! Duke was loving playing this one.
My favorite jazz melody! The great Duke Ellington.
Masterpiece !!!
Some of the best cats ever.
An absolute master of his craft. Gotta love the Duke ❤️
Man that sax section sound is hard to come by. I think a main factor to that sweet sound was Harry Carney's deep bari sound. Great band and a great tune!
By far the greatest sax section ever...and the greatest trumpet section too and the greatest trombone section too...in fact the greatest orchestra in the galaxy ! But you're right, the magic sound of Harry Carney is greatly responsable
Also Johnny Hodges's lead alto - another guy with a unique sound. And Duke's unusual voicings for the section.
& the sublime nod to Thelonious Monk! So excellent.
@@Baribrotzer i'm glad somebody mentioned duke's arrangements.
@@Baribrotzer The five players, Hodges, Carney, Procope, Hamilton and Gonsalves, were like a great offensive line in football. They played together so long that they became "five fingers of the same hand"
Love this music brilliant doesn’t get better than this ❤❤
❤❤
Is there anyone cooler than Duke? I think not. What a gentleman
WOW!! The DUKE wrote a song about a woman who’s grandchildren, great grands, great great grands...great great GREAT grands will remember. AWESOMENESS!! 💕💕💕
Oh, I love this... When I was little, I'd play the jazz station really low and it would relax me. Nice and classy performance, Mr. Ellington.
Hello LaChele how are you doing hope you’re having a great time with your family may God bless you and your family
Ah, to be old and have such amazing memories. 💙🔥
Great standard beloved by all
Watched the black and white version of this video a while ago and just came across this one and am in awe at how great they remastered this vid
A great band, and the Duke, what a great band leader! A big part of my musical heritage and day- and night dreams. .
Makes it look so effortless.
I've heard many versions of this song, and this is my favorite one. I'm not surprised. it's Duke, after all. And I'm pretty sure that's the first time I've heard his voice.
Damn look at those beautiful vintage drums... wow... simply beautiful...
Blown away, this is so great!!
This sounds incredible !!!!!!! what a beautiful number!!!!!!!
Good to finally see some video footage of Aaron Bell in action. He was my department chair for two years when I taught guitar at Essex County college in Newark NJ
Classic piece of history 👌 👏🏿 🙌🏾
This is beautiful 🥰
This is in my drum book so it’s my practice to listen to this
Sam Woodyard...
Bro same sorta lol
Use to listen as a kid. Wow brings back memories
My Dad's band used to play this tune. Thanks for sharing ❤️
I only now wish I could thank these individuals for putting out such timeless melodies...
This brother was just so cool, and confident.
That's why he was called Duke.
Crazy sense of rhythm...
I often wonder how these guys play the same tunes for their entire life and never get tired of them. I can't think of one song that does that for me.
GENIAL DUKE, creador de un Estilo imposible de comparar, una maravilla de Compositor, su música NUNCA será olvidada pasen los años que pasen.
Long Live Storyville Records!!
Just wanted to hear what the sky sounds like
Brooooo

Me also
me too! and isn't it accurate too?
Nothing beats this. American music
Ellington the master❤
Great video. Thank you for posting. The brass section made this piece sound catchy. It’s just my opinion. Duke was a legend.
Great sound, great page for others of a similar ilk.
Imagine being so beautiful that The Duke wrote and named a song after you
At 0:57 that piano trill by Duke was phenomenal.
Wonderful Aaron Bell!
Love it..all 15 of them, lol...and THE DUKE!!!!!
gotta love the Duke :)
Music with class and style!!
When I was pregnant I went to see Sophisticated Ladies. My daughter loves all kinds of music now! I was raised on Duke Ellington. Music unites us all. Music is colorblind.
Hello Sharon, How are you doing?
So beautiful!! Sparse and vibrant!!
This is my first time listening to Duke Ellington it’s his B-Dayy today so Happy Birthday to him!!!!!🥳🎉🎂 04/29/23
Love this song. My dad and I would dance to it all the time.
Now that’s music ! !
Hello Kaye, How are you doing?
'tis indeed the sky
Oh my god this is beautiful
Bless your furry heart, Garrison Keillor, for leading us to this video. 💗👍
Mom & Dad's favorite song to dance too.
It's always exciting to find a new Duke Ellington video in great quality. Especially such a great chart (though Duke composed many great charts)
Duke was a dapper dude.
beautiful tune it seems a 2020 recording.Amazing !!!!

Duke Ellington is really cool :)
Sky's beautiful, isn't it?
lol, just saw that on emkay’s recent video
The year I was born.......awesome! Thanks for this great post.
Isn't it weird that i have a big smile with closed eyes listening to this?
I've read so much about these players and being able to see them is surreal.
Happy birthday, Duke!
I don't know why but when I listen jazz and old music i feel incredibly happy and i cry tears of joy..it feels nostalgic. Maybe in my ex life i was a musician or i was a jazz liver walking in NY or Chicago ahah
I play tenor trombone, and I played this song in the school’s Jazz band and it sure has a good rythym and sound to it, with a bit of double-tonguing, and with a bit of vibrato here and there
who here in 2020 ? almost 60 years old in less than 3 years !! i wasn’t thought of when dhis came out and when dhis was posted i was 5🥺 .
Meeeeeee!!! 07/10/20 Greetings from Athens Greece!
Still a fresh 21 year old and I can say this music will never dissapear
I learned satan doll on the guitar , the chord progressions, the concepts that drive the tune, literally opend up my mind
I knew her, she passed a few years ago.
@@rwrobo202What?
I played this for my middle school jazz band, and let's just say, I miss playing in a jazz band. I'm definitely thinking about joining up in another one!
Love that ending lol
Elegante sofisticata bellissima🌸
Absalutamente!😎
La stessa ritmica suona (alternandosi con Jimmy Garrison ed Elvin Jones) nel fantastico "Duke Ellington and John Coltrane", Impulse! 1960.
Grande Duke ci ha lasciato alcuni dei più bei standard del Jazz
Just wonderful!
Those Reeds are like a magic carpet !
Sounds like blue

You came from the colour blind post didn't you
@@ayatidobhal8530 yeah lol
the only reason why i’m watching this but i feel like this would be like yellow
You too huh? 😊 But it does sound like the sky on a sunny day.
MAN, I SURE MISSED OUT ON SOME GOOD MUSIC 🎶 🎵!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I was in high school, we had a girls dance squad that performed during half time shows with the marching band (and the pep band during basketball season). They were known as "The Satin Dolls", and this was their theme song. When the band broke into the opening bars of this song, the audience knew the girls were about to perform. They would use new choreography every week to a different song, keeping the shows fresh and entertaining. Good times!
Mio padre conobbe duke ellington nel 1956/57....e anche io....il jazz lo ascolto da sempre....💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯👍💝💝💝💝❤grazie...uno dei piu' bei pezzi jazz....
