After watching your video I went to my Nikon lens bin and pulled out my 85/f2. It's a great lens and I don't know why I've ignored it for so many years. However, It's now on my camera body and ready for some action. I've also dug out my 28mm/f2 for shooting in the garden, and this lens is a real beauty. Close focusing and an amazing depth of field.
I do find it really helpful you included this two CCCP lenses. I used to own a Jupiter but due to the lack of contrast we parted. The Helios is still here but rarely get used because it is just so heavy. I've been eyeing with this Nikkor as well as a generally more practical choice.
You do take wonderful pictures with all these lenses. After I looked at the pictures Rich Haw posted in his review of this lens I went right out and bought one.
another lovely video. I really like the way that your reviews not cold and quantitative, but warm and qualitative! Difficult as this may seem, maybe even impossible, but I almost felt excitement whenwatching your video here - at last a venture into my world of Nikon. But please back off, we can't successfully mount all the other brands on our slr's and we don't want you putting the Nikkor prices up :-)

The way I look at it is an 85mm lens on 35mm film gives the true angle of view of the human eye, the extra area covered by a 50mm lens includes some peripheral vision.
Love most of those old Nikkor AIs Lenses - Great build quality and low element Count... Nice to feel the relief of not having to use modern lenses to earn money.

It can be the new 50 if you have the space. If you do, using an 85 like a 50 gives photos a medium format-like look because you get "focus gradation" (for lack of a better term) SIMILAR to shooting a 50mm equivalent (which is around 90mm) on medium format film. This is why the 85/35 combo is often used by event photographers. 85mm being the primary prime, 35 for when there's not enough room for 85.

I've not tried this particular lens yet,but tried before Nikkor 85 1.8 D on Fuji camera-fantastic! Also once I've got opportunity to test legendary Nikkor 105 2.5 lens on Nikon Z6 and it was outstanding for portraits! May be best manual focus portrait lens I've tried so far, Faces looking very dimensional & airy,skin tones beautiful.IMHO
as a portrait lens , most will buy it for portraiture , it would have been nice to see example of portrait shots to see how it renders skin tones , bokeh fall of etc.
Two years ago, I was choosing between the Nikkor Ai 85 f2 and the Nikkor H Auto 85 f1.8. Logic would dictate choosing the newer one, but after numerous test shots in the shop, the older Nikkon H Auton won out. Somehow the newer lens were a bit too clinical and lacked the magi when it plays with the light and shadow. i might be crazy but no regrets, got some great photos with the Auto.
@@zenography7923 I have learned from you that clinical execution is not the only thing in lenses, it was hard to explain how one falls enough with the "character" of a lens. It is a love at first sight thing, that 85mm Nikon Auto, for me especially.

Yes it will! You can shoot (almost) any vintage lens on your XT1; to shoot this one you need a Nikon to Fuji X adaptor. Fit one end to the camera and fit the lens to the other. Switch to manual focus and enable focus peaking, then set your camera to 'shoot without lens' and off you go!

I have been using the Vivitar 90/2.5 macro (original) since they first came out decades ago. I wore one out and paid a lot for NIB replacement over 20 years ago. I prefer it to the Nikkor 205/2.5. Great review, but I don't one.
Nikon also made a 105mm f/1.8 Ai-S in the series, which I found via eBay back in 2012 for under $200. It’s a FINE lens, and rarer than the seller or I realized - or more rare now at least it seems. A bit of an odd focal length - but the results really sing, albeit with noticeably less sharpness and contrast wide open.

I've played with this and its great little lens indeed. Currently I'm on the lookout for a Olympus OM 85/2 or Takumar 85/1,8 which I can attach on their respective mounts. Even beter lens then this Nikkor 85mm f/2.0 is the Nikkor AF 80mm f/2.8 (one of the two lenses introduced with the F3AF camera). Is a little bit bigger and heavier, but not much, but is excellent wide open (f/2.8) and that is this 85mm f/2.0 not. Bonus is that It will auto focus not only with the Nikon F3AF, but also with the Nikon F4 (not the F4s or F4e), and some other non professional Nikon camera’s. But it has a Aperture ring so it can used as a manual lens.
Could you put this with an adapter on a Canon M5 mirrorless? if so any idea of which adaptor. Ps, I found your channel fascinating and very informative.
I don't have any experience with the M5, however since it's mirrorless, this lens should mount without problems. Your camera uses the EF-M lens mount, so you'll need a Nikon AI to EF-M adaptor. A simple adaptor will suffice - I only ever use so called 'dumb' adaptors - a simple metal tube with the appropriate mount at either end. Note- when using vintage lenses, don't forget to set your camera to 'Release Without Lens' (or something similar) so that the shutter will fire. Hope that helps!
Based on few videos i watched, i understood that if we have a Nikon AI or AIS lens mounted via a speedbooster (like Viltrox NF-M43X) to the Panasonic GH5, we will be able to read the aperture change in the viewfinder. Can you confirm this? Thanks for your help!!!
I shoot GH5 professionally with a number of vintage lenses including Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 Ai-S. Unfortunately aperture info for this lens is NOT shown on viewfinder / LCD when using Metabones speed booster (or dumb adapter).
Yes, it's really great and savvy handling with such a little telephoto lens! The Pentax 2/85 is similar, but shows different colours. I like them both. My favourite one is my Nikkor-H Auto 1.8/85 since 1971 - maybe it's 'less sharp', but indeed 'sharp' photos - that's depending more on emotions than on nanopixels;-)) @philosimot
The purple fringing and chroma on nikkors are distracting to me on more wide open spectrum. Also , Jupiter has more blades should brings out more even background stopped down than nikkors ?
The nikon 85mm f/2 is sharp when wide opened, but somehow the boceh of it is a bit 'dry'. I sold mine after bought the 105 f/2.5 which in my opinion is much better.

Large aperture lenses was once an advantageous benefit due to darkening SLR focusing screens with slower lenses and single ISO film but with the advantage of high ISO performance of digital sensors today, this makes no sense anymore to shoot wide open.
A: Does passion really require quotation marks? B: Print media (back in the day) required tack sharp photos with lots of space to put text on. Think magazine titles, slogans, captions, catch phrases, pricing, barcodes etc Those fringes (e.g. on front pages) would benefit from uniformly creamy portions rather than detailed high-contrast information clashing with the text. Of course, we're talking layout here, rather than "pure photography". ;)
My iPhone takes high quality HDR images with everything in perfect focus, so using your logic, why do we need SLRs or DSLRs anymore? The iPhone is way more convenient too, it fits in my pocket and it’s ready to take photos in an instant. Maybe if you were a better, more well-rounded photographer you “would” have gotten paid hard cash to shoot wide open, but instead you’re a dried-up curmudgeon complaining on RUclips.
There’s a growing movement to use 85mm in street photography. I really love the focal length!😀

I originally bought mine for my Nikon F but have been using it with an adapter for my Fuji XT3. It is sharp even at f16.

I've been getting stunning results out of my Olympus 85mm f2.0 for street photography. The Pentax Takumar 85mm f1.9 is another of my favorites...

There were quite a few flowers in this one - lockdown has very much restricted photo opportunities I'm afraid.

50s should use only 1.8 or 2 for prime pancake. I prefer 85 f1.4 over 50 f1.2
Great video! I have a jupiter 9, but have always felt like it too soft. It does see to have oil on the blades. Would this cause softness?
Oil on the blades won't cause softness, but if it's got onto the glass it most definitely will - check it carefully with a torch to find out.
So, would it be fair to describe the overall look of the Nikon as being more modern/digital when compared to the Jupiter and Helios?
I've often wondered why you didn't do Nikon lenses before this. My favourite Nikon lens is the series E 100 mm.

True enough. I occasionally get a client who will ask for it then observe that 'nothing' is in focus.

Print media (back in the day) required tack sharp photos with lots of space to put text on. Think magazine titles, slogans, captions, catch phrases, pricing, barcodes etc
Those fringes (e.g. on front pages) would benefit from uniformly creamy portions rather than detailed high-contrast information clashing with the text.
Of course, we're talking layout here, rather than "pure photography".

My iPhone takes high quality HDR images with everything in perfect focus, so using your logic, why do we need SLRs or DSLRs anymore? The iPhone is way more convenient too, it fits in my pocket and it’s ready to take photos in an instant.
Maybe if you were a better, more well-rounded photographer you “would” have gotten paid hard cash to shoot wide open, but instead you’re a dried-up curmudgeon complaining on RUclips.
