John Denver is a national treasure. He is the only artist to have written two state anthems -- One for West Virginia ("Take Me Home, Country Roads) and one for Colorado ("Rocky Mountain High"). I'd love to see mother & daughter reaction to "Rocky Mountain High".

When John was filming this show for the the Wildlife Dederaration, it was a cold rainy day, He stepped outside fora break and was astounded to see aline of people standing outside to get ticket and singing Country Roads together. John had co-written this song almost 25 years ago when he was filming this show. He wrote so mNY WONDERFUL SONGS. lOOK INTO HIS CATALOG. yOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED. iF HE HAD HELP AND SANG SOMETHING SOMEONE ELSE WROTE, HE USUALLY HAD A STORY ABOUT THE SONG.

I grew up on a farm, (and stayed there), we had two best holidays, Christmas and July 4th. The community would celebrate the 4th at rotating farmsteads, and I will always remember sitting around with all the neighbor young folks singing songs, playing guitar etc. Take me home was one of our favorites.....gosh 51 years ago, and this song puts me right back there with all of them. Some have passed on now, but I'll always be able to be there in my mind when I hear that song. Thank you. BTW, Hey It's Good to be Back Home Again, by John does the same thing. God Bless.

Any halfway decent musician in the old days had to be good live to make decent money.
Unless you happened to have family in the music label your cut of the single/ablum royalties is always going to be much smaller than the labels cut, whereas the label takes only a minimal cut of live ticket sales when they take anything at all.

Thanks! Rest in Peace Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. (John Denver). Ever notice how it seems that people born with insane prodigy skills often has very difficult times in & with their private lives. John Denver was no different, had a Severe Problem with Alcohol, along with various neurosis that ultimately made him someone you Couldn't Live with. Last wife Annie (like in "Annies Song"), was having some tree and landscape work done, John returned home from a tour, highly intoxicated he went into a violent rant shouting about how his wife had cut out some of his favorite bushes and trees on purpose, just waiting for him to leave. He went outside, returned with a chainsaw and proceeded to cut into pieces their extremely expensive Imported Dining Table and accompanied chairs. Died Alone flying a Long EZ (a really innovative Home-Built Aircraft) a friend owned when he forgot to check the gas and ran out. He already had his license pulled many months back due to alcoholic medical, he was flying Illegal.

I'm glad you were finally able to do a reaction to this song on youtube. I know you previously had issues with it being blocked. "Take Me Home, Country Roads" is one of John Denver's signature songs and his first major hit that launched his recording career. The people in West Virginia wanted to make this their state song. John Denver also wrote "Leaving On A Jet Plane" which he gave to Peter, Paul, and Mary and they took it to #1 on the pop charts in 1969. There are 2 other John Denver songs that I'd like for you to react to. They are "Rocky Mountain High", which the people in Colorado wanted to make it their state song, and his duet with Placido Domingo "Perhaps Love" which his ex-wife Annie admitted is her favorite John Denver song.

Everytime I start to listen to you two, and daughter has already heard the song, I click you both off, I don't want to hear something you have heard. It is for me a first reaction song I want to hear from daughter.

So poeticalisticalistic! I mean "Take me home, Ohio" is nowhere nearly so poeticalisticalistic. Speaking of luxury living, we used to get to walk 40 miles through acid-sleet, naked, on our hands, without gloves, just to get to school, seven days a week. Uphill both ways!! And this is North Carolina: Where people from West Virginia now live. BTW...y'all are so funny at the end there. And I was thinking the same thing, right from the gitgo. The child hath become the parent. Lemme guess. Sagittarius/Taurus?

@@generationgapreacts That's it! Had I thought a little harder, I might well have said Cancer. Mom is very Sagittarius.

I don't think that your grandpa was exaggerating about the poverty that he faced growing up. My mother's family, while not in West Virginia, faced similar struggles. She had six sisters and five brothers, and as one of the youngest she rarely received anything new. Shoes, clothes, toys, all patched/repaired to be passed down. She had to drop out of high school at age 14 to care for her father and younger sibs (3) as her father had a major stroke and her mother had to go to work to earn money to feed the family. She finally got her G.E.D. at age 42 and passed away last year at the young age of 79.
