It drives me crazy when I see people doing stupid things like crossword puzzles, or checking their emails, when the crew is going through the checklist. The flaps and spoilers moving about are just amazing to watch...
@snagireddy3283 - Before I became enamored of aviation I was one of those. And I wondered why it took so long to get going. No longer. Now I'm running imaginary checklists through my head (Imaginary. As in I have no experience whatsoever.)
Mechanical and Hydraulic sounds are the best sounds this is why I love cars and planes because mechanical mods on cars usually make nice sounds whenever it’s working properly (such as the straight cut gears of a race transmission) and as for planes, every noise you hear has an explanation and location on what the noise is
The flap extension/retractions is much slower than what I always thought it would be! It can be slow but has to be extremely firm to be able to handle those forces... Music to my ears ❤
Wow thats cool. They move much slower than I thought. Makes sense since it is a strong load-bearing meachanism. The force transferred by those wings is nuts to think about.
Flying from Aus to Europe and back for so many years this sound is so nostalgic for me. Found this vid only after my last a380 flight to Singapore. Unfortunately wont hear it on the way back.
@@aviationjames6005 good to hear. I actually flew on British airways’ A380 over two weeks ago. It was very nice. Their first class and business class cabins though are spectacular from what I saw when boarding, but to be honest, the economy class is still good enough for me cause I do save tons of money (which I can use to try out other airlines) instead of spending a huge amount just for a ten-hour flight, and I still get free inflight entertainment and free meals which were decent for me.
Emirates will keep them up until 2040 and spent $950m on building an engineering center. In the next 5-10 years Emirates will become the sole A380 operator.
its probably because the eletrical components driving the flap tracks are closer to the passenger than the engines. Also the fact that if the flap motors are in the lower fuselage then the sound has a direct solid medium for the vibration to travel from below the deck to the cabin area closest to the passenger/observer which even with great sound proofing is hard to suppress.
I've always wondered why you get that low pitched noise towards the end of a flaps extension/retraction on the A380. Not something I've heard on any other aircraft. Anybody know?
Yep. It is always a standard procedure anytime after both engines start to before takeoff to test out the ailerons (the mechanism that lets the airplane turn in the air and keep a straight heading).
no, hydraulic. But they operate on a much higher hydraulic pressure than for example the ones on the A320. So maybe that explains the different noise. Also the engine noise level in the cabin of the A380 is much lower, so you hear the hydraulics even more
@@MrSchwabentier On the 320, the flaps dont make a sound when they move. You hear the hydraulic pump, and the PTU (the "barking dog" sound for those who dont know). And thats it. But on the Embraers i also deal with, the flaps are electric. And they make a wind-up noise like that when they start moving. Which is what stumped me into wondering about that here.
@@davecrupel2817 yes, and what you hear here is the hydraulic pump as well. But as I said as it operates on a much higher pressure the sound is higher pitched than on the A320

I hope for their sakes it's "sheer" power, not "shear" power...🤨
The a380 has the slowest flaps but the SOUND IT'S A WHOLE ORCHESTRA

On one side, they are enormous
The other side, is the system fully pressurized
I love the small overrun sound as it nears setting.
Loudest sound are on the ground .. takeoff on the A380 is amazingly quiet!
Concorde be like:
The A350 also has the same sound! Really cool!
What a beautiful sound! ♥♥♥
I love that the flaps alone on A380 probably have more surface area than a 737 or A321 has total wing area with flaps extended.

The A380s are awesome. They better not retire. I think Lufthansa and Air France both got rid of them if I am not wrong.
Yes it’s a beautiful machine! Lufthansa recently brought back their A380 into service again :)

Reminds me of the sound of Ramiel drilling through the armour around the NERV HQ.
You hear similar sounds on other big jets. Like the 777-300ER.

It's wired how the flaps and landing gear seem noisier than the engines.
well, there ARE electrical components at play. why wouldn't there be wires?
@@keemez
The mechanisms which drive the flaps and landing gear are under the cabin floor, so they are not soundproofed by the fuselage skin. =)

Could be the hydraulic pumps slowing down a bit so the flaps aren’t stopping from full speed? I wouldn’t be sure tho

the a380 flaps take sooo long to putd down
Why does it take quite a long time to extend flaps ?🤔
because a) they are massive, and b) there is no benefit in them being faster, only drawbacks
