There are some issues with the audio in parts of the video unfortunately, there were issues with rendering and I don't have the original files to go back and attempt to edit the video again, nor would it make much sense with how RUclips treats reuploads! I will remake this video again one day in the future when I have more experience and hopefully can do a better job all round!
I started this a few years ago as an experienced RPG gamer with a lot of love for the genre, and I immediately felt like the genre had lost a trick in giving us maps, journals and tooltips. There is something so, so engaging about slowly charting out a world, taking careful notes, and seeing it all take shape. Especially when you see the map in your notes start to resemble elements of the world map and you begin to see the bigger picture. What a fantastic game.
Started out with M&M6 and fell in love with the series and the genre. A long time ago I brought the compilation on GOG and BOY was I unready for the experience that I was getting... I love the game, but I always had a feel in the back of my mind that features were missing when in reality the features probably werent even invented XD I still go back to it from time to time to enjoy the game for what it is.
@@CopperPlaysRetro And it was a deal of the decade for me when I grabbed it and the rest of the M&M and Heroes series. (What my wallet could afford at least :'( )
@@CopperPlaysRetro I like your video very much. I would like to comment on what you said at about 9 minutes, on the graphics. I think for the time, Might and Magic had better illustrations than Wizardry or Ultima IV...at least in the eyes of 11 year old me! And sound... again at the time, well let's just say it's pretty amazing what Wizardry did for the imagination in that regard! So much so that I thought the NES music in all ported fantasy games felt out of place. Just my two cents.
One the best Christmas presents ever! Uncle gave me a bundle of both 1&2 - pretty sure I was still playing them by the next Christmas, diligently mapping everything.
What a rare and beautiful present it is, that the algorithm sent me here. Grew up with MM 6-8 and of course Heroes of MM. Thanks for talking me to the beginning of the series!
To this day MM1 is the only game in the Might and Magic series I've never played (though my experience of 2 was extremely limited and I've not revisited it since early childhood). Might be time to finally do something about that this festive season... That ScummVM Enhanced version looks like a genius idea - hopefully they can get it stable, even though I played them on the Amiga at the time travelling back to MM3 was rough, going further back still feels pretty daunting.
Yeah I agree, the ScummVM version looks nice, but I think the Macintosh version, despite the monochrome graphics, is the easiest version to play. All the information you need for fights is usually on a single screen so no need to constantly jump through menus to check health etc. It allows you to play at a much faster pace. I considered an LP, since I'd like to say I've completed it, but in reality I don't think it makes for good viewing! Unless I heavily edited it, even then I think it would have niche appeal!
@@CopperPlaysRetro it was the 80s! we would go to some local billiards hall that had a 'computer club' saturday once a month with a box of empty floppies and every month we would exchange a bunch of games with other people . piracy was rampant. I had every Sierra adventure that was ever published, yet we only paid for 1 of them. Even my law abiding parents didn't mind ( but they didn;t understand much about computers and certainly not understand why software was so expensive )
I tried playing _MM4_ (on loan from a friend) on my PC back in the day, but I ultimately gave up when my characters were dropping from old age after a short time. +30 years later, I may give the game another try if I can figure out what was going wrong.
Wouldnt finding the Guildmaster from the first town in the Nes version let you create your own characters using the ones from the inn as fodder for them? I could be wrong it has been a bit but I could of sworn I remember the Guildmaster letting you do this.
I thought so as well! I read the opposite in an old review and when I tried to locate the guild master for this video I couldn't find them. I just looked up the manual and you're right that there should be a guild master in the first town that can alter your characters.
Great video. Also liked that you checked out different versions of the game. Unfortunately not the C64 version I own. But I doubt it's the best. Never played it yet, still got MM1 infront of me. ^^ There is also a graphics overhaul mod for MM1 (not the SCUMMVM one) but enhances the graphics a bit, but keeps it within the era. Regarding the video itself: I think there is an issue where you start play all the audio double. Not sure if its already present before that, but around minute 10:10 when you start talking about PC engine you can hear the narration twice, and the whole Intro becomes a mess in terms of sound. So you might actually want to consider to edit and reupload. But either way, nice video!
Thanks for the tips, I did try and get the C64 version running but without luck unfortunately. I missed the double audio sorry about that, this is the second time I've uploaded this video unfortunately, there were a lot of issues with rending this video for some reason!
Let me double check for you, I had a whole bunch of issues rendering this video, this is actually a reupload. Wouldn't be surprised if text has ended up in the wrong place but I'll double check now.
Ah, I think I might know what the issue is, and a colossal balls up if it's the case. I was likely running the DOS version with a graphics mod by TheDrakeRaider from dungeoncrawlers.org ... I totally forgot. Thanks for pointing it out, I'll make a note on the video so people are aware.
interesting, I heard of M&M via sierra Lords of the Realm 2. I couldn't figure it out, It was awesome looking, but I lost every time, without any understanding. But those games seemed to have very little fandom. No one who plays Lords of the Realm ever played with info, they just played. So it was all self learned. This was different, since it was a demo. I felt it was too challenging to pay money for. But being named Merlin, I had to try. But I didn't know it was around before Sierra games made it. But I guess that was called Lords of Magic as they combined M&M with Lords of the realm?
I love your presentation and voice. Your pacing is also well done. However, your sound in the game intros are being doubled and it does not sound good. Also, this retrospective feels incomplete because you only delve into slight details about the game. I feel like a true retrospective covers all the major beats of the gameplay. For example: 1. Highlight the major fights and how they push a player to adapt. Fighting groups vs fighting tough monsters like dragons. 2. Talk about the itembase of the game - how it enhances the player and how they grow from beginning to end. 3. Talk about the major highlights of the story - from the major quests to the ciphers included in the game as hints and how it ties into the sci-fi elements you mentioned in the beginning. Edit the video down to 13-15 minutes like you did here. You would have a golden video that stands head and shoulders above anyone else making a much longer video.
Thanks for the feedback! I did make this video quite some time ago for a channel that never took off and got deleted. There were some issues with the rendering when I went back to it unfortunately. I will go back and remake it one day after I've completed the game, I might cover 2 at the same time. Cheers.

Played it on Apple II when it came out. I still think the open world aspect of that game is unmatched.
I like the mix of fantasy and sci-fi, and having to slowly explore the world. Not many open world games today have you do that. Cheers!

25 Pounds in 1986 is worth roughly 92 Pounds/119 Dollars today (october 2024). Pretty crazy.

I used to play the heck out of Might And Magic in the 80s.
I never played the first one, I did play M&M 2 when it came out and have played most of the others including M&M X.
