Hey, everyone, Ryan here at etrailer. Today on our 2024 Subaru Crosstrek, we're gonna be showing you how to install the Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver. Before we do that, though, let's just take a minute, check this out, and make sure it's gonna be the right hitch for you. So when it comes to putting a hitch on a vehicle like the Crosstrek, it makes complete sense. You know, people use these Subarus to do a lotta different things, and having this hitch is gonna open up your opportunities, you know, whether you're trying to pull a trailer or use accessories. There are quite a few hitches available for the Crosstrek, and with this one, I feel like it's almost better suited if you plan on doing quite a bit of towing, okay And I say that because it's gonna have some higher capacities than the other hitches.
The safety chain openings are quite a bit bigger, so they'll accept the larger hooks, and even the bracket that's already attached here lets you mount up trailer wiring pretty easily. But that's not to say you can't use accessories with this, because you absolutely can. In terms of what this is going to fit, you know, as far as the submodels or whatnot go, across the board, it's gonna work with all the different types of Crosstreks, even the hybrids and the Wilderness edition, like we have here today. Now, depending on your submodel or edition, it might look a little bit different on the back of your vehicle. And so perfect example, on the Wilderness, you know, the bumper's a little bit different than the other ones, sits up a little bit higher, and so the hitch is definitely gonna be more exposed and more noticeable, which I don't think is a huge deal on a vehicle like the Crosstrek but something I definitely wanted to mention.
With the other ones, that bumper comes down further, and the hitch will kind of blend in a little bit better. With this being a Class 3 hitch, it's gonna have the two-inch-by-two-inch receiver tube opening, which is a good thing. That's a super common size, so a lot of different things will work with it. It is going to use the standard 5/8 pin and clip. Keep in mind, though, one does not come included with the hitch.
If you need one, not a huge deal. You can always grab it here at etrailer. And a lot of times, too, if you end up buying a new accessory, they'll come included with one, so something to look out for. We mentioned the safety chain openings and the size of those. So really shouldn't run into too many issues regardless on what size hook your trailer might have on it.
Like I said before, the hitch is gonna have some really good weight capacities. Maximum gross tongue weight rating is gonna be 675 pounds. That's the amount of weight pushing down on the hitch. And with that rating, you know, you should be able to use pretty much any size bike rack or cargo carrier that you want to. As far as the maximum gross trailer weight rating goes, that's gonna be 4,500 pounds, or the amount of weight that is pulling on the hitch, so that's the weight of your trailer plus anything that you might have in or on it. And with that in mind, I do always like to recommend it's never a bad idea just to grab your Subaru owner's manual. That way you can check in there and make sure that your Crosstrek can handle that much weight safely. I'll give you a couple of measurements, and you can use these to help figure out what type of accessories will work best. And on our Wilderness model, from the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening, that's gonna be about 15 1/2 inches. So if you do plan on pulling a trailer around, chances are pretty good you can use a ball mount that has a straight shank. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the rear bumper, that's going to be about two inches, which is really good. So you shouldn't have too many issues here, but if need be, you can use that to help figure out exactly if those folding-style accessories can be stored in that upright position without hitting the back of your Crosstrek. Other than that, at the end of the day, a hitch that will definitely get the job done. As far as the installation goes, it's really not too bad. Essentially you just get the hardware installed in the frame, and the hitch just lifts up into position, and you bolt everything down. So not really a whole lot to it, but if you plan on doing this yourself, feel free to hang around. We'll go ahead and get started on it now. To begin our installation, we're gonna be working underneath the back of

That looks horrible. Can you do a video installing the stealth hitch on the Crosstrek Wilderness?

We've asked our video folks. As soon as a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness comes through our shop, we'll get some install footage. However, according to EcoHitch the install procedure for their # 306-X7365 on the Crosstrek Wilderness models would be exactly the same as the standard Crosstrek. The linked video shows the # 306-X7365 being installed on a 2019 Crosstrek.

Good question. Is there a hidden hitch for it?

Do you have to cut the holes larger?

On the Draw-Tite # 76209, no holes need to be drilled or enlarged.

It doesn't look the best, does it? However, if your Crosstrek is a hybrid model, that's the hitch you'd need to go with because of the way the muffler sits up against the bumper. If your Crosstrek isn't a hybrid, I'd recommend the Curt # C13382 which is much more concealed.
