There’s all sorts of undercurrents in a Barangay. Family loyalties, old feuds , shared corrupt dealings ….all of which you as an outsider are ignorant of and which play into any outcome.
We had similar issue had to be resolved in barangay. About a year ago our neighbor told us that our 7 year old kid (my gf daughter) had scratched her car and we had to pay her 80k pesos for the damages as she took that car to Toyota and they gave her estimate for fixing all the damages on her two year old Toyota Vios meanwhile that car is a rental car and it’s driven daily by new customers of theirs To make the story short they knew that if they will Blame these scratches all over the car on a small child whom is living with his mother at boyfriends house and he is foreigner he will just pay what ever the bill is (obviously those scratches were not made by our kid) At the barangay we had to go there three times to make it final because all barangay captain and his other helpers knew they are trying to scam us out of money they took our side and told us after those three appearances this will be over and their decision is that they don’t believe our kid those damages. BTW just yesterday we received a letter now she that crazy neighbour is taking us to court next month first week of October for same damages on her rental car.
Those people are there and they think nothing about telling lies and it's not just your wife or girlfriend they will come after ... It's your wife's family too.... They will make things up , to cause trouble, knowing the Foreigner will pay , to help his woman's family.... It's almost like the court system there , is geared to help them... The women who come to the states , They send lots of money back to the Philippines and it changes her family's life , and these people see this ... They know there's money there... The money these women send back also Stimulates the Philippines economy . And I have no doubt , it causes the opposite here . Be careful. ...

I also had someone reported to the barangay to settle the matter of non payment of personal debt. The barangay (pronounced "barang-guy" not "barang-gey" just so people could understand you more) is the smallest unit of government; it is not a court of law but they are allowed to settle matters that you described. That is a form of "out of court settlement." The first point when going for settlements is the barangay (not all cases apply) if the problem is not settled there, that's when you can elevate it to the actual court. If my case was not settled at the barangay level, I was prepared to go to small claims court. Thankfully, the other party paid their debt. If you really want to live there for good, try to learn the local language. If it's Bisaya, "para dili ka mabaligya." If your girl speaks Bisaya, ask her what it means. Have a nice day.

I am from Central Mindanao, Bukidnon is nice and huge! I've stayed at Malaybalay long time ago. Gorgeous! From where you want to build, find out where the nearest local hospital is, how equipped it is, whether it has the medical specialties you need and how to get there then rethink. Learn the language, it will help you go far, if you really want to live there for the long term.
My wife is from Mindanao as well as being a former Major in the Philippine army, and she has a reputation in town that no one had better mess with her. She will give you a dressing down that isn't to be believed. And she is good friends with the Mayor, the Vice Mayor as well as the Barangay Captain. I just sit back and watch the show. LOL
I get warnings like this all the time. I never know if I should take it as helpful advice or a threat. After three years, my wife and I have a sort of reputation for not putting up with a lot of crap. We are in Mindanao as well.

Foreigners are increasingly even avoiding employing maids now because of the stealing, whether money left somewhere or card details being copied. This vid is just another reminder how dishonest many of these guys can be towards foreigners. Imagine how low this mother and son were being, after being treated so well by this foreigner, they came back with a fake injury story, then after asking 1000, the asking went to 1500, and after getting this they still went to the Local Officer in hopes of dishonestly draining more money from the foreigner, hoping the officer would be on their side. Thankfully there was cam-footage to expose their greediness and dishonesty.

Well stated fact! An expat is a target with 1000s of eyes studying the expat that are actively plotting money scams that could never be imagined.
I came from the USA to get away from all of the corruption, and I am here to say that the Filipinos are amateurs when it comes to corruption.
