Right on point! Buying Filipinos alcohol, food, and recreation? To a Filipino that was exposing your personal finances. The Filipino smile is a social mask perceived by the expat as friendliness. In the Philippines the expats are perceived as multimillionaires while living among impoverished Filipinos. None of these expats would choose to live in South Chicago or Englewood/Compton.

We had similar issue had to be resolved in barangay. About a year ago our neighbor told us that our 7 year old kid (my gf daughter) had scratched her car and we had to pay her 80k pesos for the damages as she took that car to Toyota and they gave her estimate for fixing all the damages on her two year old Toyota Vios meanwhile that car is a rental car and it’s driven daily by new customers of theirs
To make the story short they knew that if they will Blame these scratches all over the car on a small child whom is living with his mother at boyfriends house and he is foreigner he will just pay what ever the bill is (obviously those scratches were not made by our kid)
At the barangay we had to go there three times to make it final because all barangay captain and his other helpers knew they are trying to scam us out of money they took our side and told us after those three appearances this will be over and their decision is that they don’t believe our kid those damages.
BTW just yesterday we received a letter now she that crazy neighbour is taking us to court next month first week of October for same damages on her rental car.

I also had someone reported to the barangay to settle the matter of non payment of personal debt. The barangay (pronounced "barang-guy" not "barang-gey" just so people could understand you more) is the smallest unit of government; it is not a court of law but they are allowed to settle matters that you described. That is a form of "out of court settlement." The first point when going for settlements is the barangay (not all cases apply) if the problem is not settled there, that's when you can elevate it to the actual court. If my case was not settled at the barangay level, I was prepared to go to small claims court. Thankfully, the other party paid their debt.
If you really want to live there for good, try to learn the local language. If it's Bisaya, "para dili ka mabaligya." If your girl speaks Bisaya, ask her what it means. Have a nice day.
