Hearing Quartermain on commentary is so refreshing coming back to this. He has so much energy and investment into every moment of play.
In comparison, i cannot stand James Brawshaw covering our game. So many moments of any match he is silent as the grave

Geelong supporter here, amazing watching this back and seeing all those chances that went begging from a St Kilda perspective. You were probably better than as that day for a large portion. That Saints team will go down as probably the most deserving team of a flag which never won one. So many legends on that team, I'm sad they never got one!

The Saints peaked too soon in 2009, as they did in 1997, as the Cats did in 2008, and as the Crows did in 2017.
On this occasion, inaccurate kicking for goal made all of the difference. 14 goals 9 behinds (93 points) would have been a 13 point victory. Bad kicking is bad football, as the commentators say. I have huge sympathy for Robert Harvey and similar legends. He was loyal to St Kilda, and paid the price for that. Over the years, a few players switched clubs to achieve the premiership that couldn't come any other way.

Absolute classic. 2005,6,18 are the only competition - but the absolute brutality of the competition between these sides and the weather just perfectly fits the vibe. It might be the best match ever played. Sorry Sainters.

It was great to see Bob Davis out there enjoying the win. He didn't survive to see Geelong's 3rd in that set of 3 completed in 2011. He was a premiership player in 1951 & 1952; premiership coach in 1963 and had to wait 44 years to see the next one.

Shannon Byrnes' epic last quarter went a long way to securing Geelong's 2009 flag.

    I was there!
It's the ultimate being at a winning Grand Final. Nothing like it.
When Harry Taylor had it at the end, I stood up and said "Don't hurry it. Hold onto the ball! Take your time".

@@tr1p1ea No - in 2008 Geelong was the best team no doubt, but outplayed in the grand final. In 2009 St Kilda, was the best team and also the best team on the day but ultimately lost the Grand Final. Geelong players and Bomber Thompson have openly admitted how lucky they were to win in 09. It’s one of the biggest injustices on Grand Final day there has been.

I understand umps like to put the whistle away in the last qtr but Schneider not getting holding the man free kick was a shocker. Milne choking and Dawson was a boy among men. Cats experience shone through when it mattered. Chappy won the NS because he set up so many of their forward attacks even when he wasn't kicking them himself. He was the difference. Saints needed a Chappy up the other end and they would have won easily.
