Finally we get to see the Stoic! Great job Steve on the review! Just ordered my Stoic 4 (2023 version) a month ago when it was on sale for 1590$. I think only Vitus is offering better spec for the money but the geo is not that modern. So this had me having doubts about the bike being that cheap. Haven’t gor time to properly test it but i can’t wait for your review.
They were on sale for $900 back in February. I snatched one up for my kid, it's a killer bike when paying under a grand. I already had a dropper and stuff I needed to set it up tubeless too.

Like the slightly too long cables/hoses on Canyon bikes. It's allowed me to add riser bars/stems to better fit the rider, without redoing 4+ cables/hoses.
agreed about the seat tube length being a bit tall. on mine, the bike felt too tall even with the dropper all the way down. it was hard to get out of the way of that seat on descents - that was my only real complaint with the bike. also - wish i'd known that you were supposed to trim those bars! they did indeed feel ridiculously long, and i was like "this can't be right." 14:50 Do note that if you size down to a small, the bike will come with, & probably only fit, 27.5 wheels/Tires and not 29ers. Which will make it handle differently, no matter the similar geometry (& no matter what Canyon says). Other manufacturers make perfectly usable 29er bikes for smaller riders with very, very similar geometry; I believe this design choice is actually a flaw in the sizing lineup of most Canyon models not just the Stoic.
I think tubes in the tires makes sense for a company that sells direct to the general public. Not everyone has a pump for tubeless tires, or the knowhow. In fact, I suspect most customers don't. This way, you can at least get the bike built and rolling. You can take it to the LBS for tubeless options.
During the Covid days, this was the first bike I tried to buy. Not a chance! I was miraculously able to get a Ragley mmmbop for $1699. Waaaay better bike for much less money. Stoic is still a cool bike, thanks Steve.
Just bought the trek Roscoe 7 after deciding between the two. Decided that getting over the bike and test riding it first is important, so bought the trek from my local shop.

I have that bike for 2 years now and it can handle more than I initially thought. I live in the Canary Islands - steep climbs and steep, rocky descends. Because of the steep climbs I searched for a capable Hardtail and I have to say that it blows me away. You almost can throw anything you want at it. It fits me perfectly- that said, I have the opposite body composition than Steve - short torso and long legs. This is a bike I’ve been waiting for Steve to review. It seems to be rarely available though. Maybe it’ll be in stock more often now since the supply chain hopefully is getting better.
I am also thinking about getting it for my first bike. Would that be good option? The thing is that i just don’t like the silver color on the new model
Is guess I do not suffer from gear acquisition syndrome as I still enjoy my Giant hardtail from 1997 or so and ride it almost everyday. Thanks for the look at what a hardtail looks like these days.
I have a Banshee Paradox V3 after Steve reviewed it. Pike Ultimate 150 mm with Honcho Teravail 2.60 both front and rear. Best mountain bike i have ever had.
Love the video. I have watched this one twice as I just bought a Canyon Stoic 3 a week ago. I got it on sale for $1100 + free shipping which seemed like a steal. So far I really like it and have only made a few small changes- Fooker pedals, PNW grips, a Rockbros saddle and converted it to tubeless. I wonder if Canyon watched your video as my was taped and ready to go for tubeless. Just needed some valves
What a great timing for this video, I have just ordered my Canyon Stoic 2 two days ago, I have been waiting for sometime now for you to make this video, I’m really looking forward to see what you think on your first ride with this bike. Great work.
I had a Stoic 3 in 2021. Saddle and grips are all the same on the Stoics, and they are scrap. I you want to buy a Stoic, spare some extra money, because you need to buy a new saddle and grips immediately. And pull out these super heavy Kenda tubes that Canyon puts in. Switching to Schwalbe Aerothan tubes almost saved me 500g (!) of weight. Going tubeless wasn't an option because I read a review in an online magazine once, saying that those Alexrims are not safe enough for a tubeless setup. Alexrims wheels were very solid, but heavy. The overall bike was very heavy - way more heavy than Canyon indicated on their website, so I felt a little betrayed. Dropper post broke while on my the third longer tour. It took 2 weeks since Canyon gave an initial feedback for the warranty stuff, but then they replaced the whole thing without hesitation (expect long shipping times if you are not in Germany). Overall a heavy, but solid bike. I rode it at the bike parks, too, and I always had the feeling that my riding skills were not enough to fully pushing the bike to its limit. I sold the bike last year and have a fully now, but I wish I wish I had kept it as a tour or winter bike.
When I change´t to tubeless, I didn't realist the rim strips weren't tape`t. Absolutely no problem with airloss. Still haven't change`t them at the front.
I was going to buy canyon but ended up with my orbea Alma M50, canyon would be my next bike choice but the orbea 8 years on has been absolutely brilliant.l
I really look forward to the trail ride. I love watching these rides. I keep learning so much. You are a really good rider. Sedona looks like a blast. And thanks to you, I think I could have so much fun riding there. Though, I would walk some of the harder parts! 😃
Stuff that I don’t think is mentioned is that the “bike guard” bike box (the very same box that every bike ever sold comes in) is an additional £18 on top of the shipping costs. The saddle sucks and the cable routing through the frame is pretty awful. Sharp edges to rip into cables.
Excited for this one.. got it last year on a 6 month waiting list.. it was a battle between the stoic and the scout but i pull the trigger on the stoic due to the color and the rear wheel clearance..
Interesting walk-through. I had the Stoic on my shortlist together with the Nukeproof Scout and the NS Eccentric. Ended up buying the NS Eccentric 29 Alu frame a few weeks ago, as Canyon was not ready to sell a frame only and because the Eccentric was just too good a bargain to ignore for a brand-new frame. @hardtailparty have you ever considered reviewing the NS Eccentric, maybe both the Alu and CroMo versions back to back?
i had this for all of 2 months.. absolutely hated how overly stiff it felt. it really beat me up.. I sold it and bought a Ragley Big Al and never looked back..
I have a Stoic 2 since 2 years. Paid 799euros for it and it's my first "real" MTB. The geometry is nice but the rear end fill very stiff and the fork is quite bad. Pretty interested on full review verdict !
Can't wait for the ride review. Hate that they put tubes and no tape in a tubeless ready setup. I already had extra tape and valves so made the swap on my kids Stoic 2 immediately and added a dropper. A week after I got the Stoic 2, the Stoic 4 went on sale for $1500 for a couple days. I was pissed because I would have paid $500 more for the Stoic 4. Been a great bike for my kid, been hitting trails with me, and it's been great for him so far. I use the tools that came with his bike for almost everything. I have two sets from my Canyon Grail and keep the other one in my truck just in case I need to adjust something before I ride. If it's the same saddle that's on the Stoic 2, it's complete garbage. Took that off after his first ride. Thankfully, I have tons of spare parts, but most people don't. 3.0 DHR didn't fit, I tried my wheel to test it out. 2.8 Rekon does fit.
Love the words in the box saying welcome to a community....and then say hello to another...the I'm broke, hungry, starving, no home, no clothes community....but hey....ya got a....nice bike. Wow.
I ride a Santa Cruz carbon highball. It’s like a 2016 or something I love that bike. I am just going to be updating it instead of getting a new frame. I’m gonna go with a new wheel set and some new cranks and a group set.
I'm betting they substituted out a few parts through the years due to shortages and i got unlucky to end up with one that didn't have taped rims. Probably a fluke, as it sounds like most others had tubeless ready rims.
Seat tube slot on the side - never seen that before. They couldn't put it on the front to keep the filth out due to the ugly gusset on the over-tall tube. Nice looking bike, hope you don't snakebite! 🤞
Wait till you have to work on the head set, I have one and the headset was the first problem, after that was the welds that gave up and the frame just turned into a pile of tubes. I didn't had a lot of problems with it because I disassembled everything, the thing was bone dry. That assembled in cambodja sticker was a huge red flag, every single torque spec was far out.
Ok, apparently YT sorts out the in anglosaxon frivolious sounding Hardtail from the Brand Rose, called B-O-N-E-R-O, which would be worth reviewing as well. It is simply a splendid hardtail! It is now the third attempt to steer attention to this lovely alternative of the Stoic...
Cool bike... I had one when canyon introcuded them. Nice looking, super stiff, a little low quality finish and inconstant geo... almost like enduro hardtail with 140 - 150mm fork but very low stack that creates issues when going DH.... and veryyyyy long reach and top tube. Canon M is others bikes L. After year on Canyon Stoic I swapped frame for Commencal Meta HT... same stiff, better quality finish and proper high stack + Commencal you can ride 27.5 , mullet or full 29. But this Stoic was cool trail hardtail for long rides... but then issue was how stiff was frame... for endure is cool to have overbuild but for long trail riding it was exhausting sometimes + saddle was extreme uncomfortable. LOL 😊 Love your channel hardtail party 🙌🏼
I seriously considered ordering this bike as it was a great price and I loved the colour. I went with a trek roscoe 7 though as it was local. Super excited for you!! 😊
Yeah I forgot it's still on qr. I wish they finally updated it like it's electric sibling Gran Canyon:ON. 2023 version got different geo than previous model.
Greeeat! I was wondering why you had not reviewed this beast yet. At least in Europe that bike is a steal. And they regularly are at a discount. And not only that, if you order it and it gets discounted or further discounted in the following days, they gave you the amount of the discount back this was my case, so direct knowledge). I think that is outstanding customer service. The bike is heavy but sturdy and strong as it should because it is meant for the rough side of things. Check the rotor size too. My only wish is half a cm longer chainstay, and 1 cm longer headtube in the XL size. That green color and the shape are beautiful. I am loving mine. Looking forward to the full review!
How often do they go on sale? I saw there had been one about a month ago and unfortunately I couldn’t buy it in time. So I was wondering how much longer I need to wait haha
Did you know... Hardtail Party's reviews are completely independent? I don't get paid from companies to review their bikes. I rely on people sharing my content with others, donations through buymeacoffee and Patreon to support this channel. Unlinked the big websites, I don't get $10k+ from canyon or others as a sponsor. So you can count on unbiased reviews of your favorite hardtails on this channel. If you learned something and benefitted from this video, consider supporting this channel in some way. A large number of viewers of this video aren't yet subscribed. If you love hardtails, consider subscribing. We focus on hardtails here and I love showcasing different brands and geometries. I really wish this bike had come tubeless, understand a lot of stoic owners received tubeless valves and taped rims. I can only speak for what I received. Yes, it would have been nice to set this up tubeless, but these videos already take 30-40 hours to make. On top of that, any time I have to set a bike up tubeless, that comes out of my pocket. So valves, tape, and sealant all have to be provided by me. With the number of bikes I get in at a time, I choose not to spend my money or time setting up bikes that I feel should already come tubeless ready. I was pretty disappointed this one didn't come with taped rims. Interested in hearing how this bike compares to the other 80 hardtails I e ridden? I actually have wondered if the tubes are installed to keep the tubeless tape compressed and help it adhere to the rim better? Assuming the rim is taped properly (clearly not in this case). After having some recent tubeless issues with stubborn carbon rims, the tube-on-tape overnight definitely helps the tape out before you put sealant in. An extra step but saves me hours of cursing leaky rims and my rim tape jobs.
Cool. This bike was on my list, didn't buy it though. But I'm looking forward for the ride review. Interested how its weight will affect the ride feel. Good review Steve. 👍
It’s a great price but it still costs me 350 bucks to ship it to my country. That makes it a lot more expensive than the Roscoe 8. I’d be interested to hear that comparison.
I love that you break down everything. From parts, to geometry and seeing what tire size can fit. I always just thought a bike is a bike. But no. You can't even compare my nukeproof to the kent I used to ride. So much better in everyway and a lot safer lol. You have the best hard tail channel. I wish you nothing but success.
I was in the fence ordering this a few days ago, but I didn’t like the silver paint job, so I ordered a Stoic 2 on a size smaller than my fit, just to see how it feels ridding a smaller bike.
The limited color options is, so far, the only thing I disliked about the canyon bikes I ordered. That green color doesn’t seem to be available in the 2023 Stoic 4, only the silver. I also didn’t like the red of the Stoic 3. But boy, I loved the colors on the Stoic 2. I would have ordered the white frame had it been available, but there was only one bike in stock. Still, the black Stoic 2 is pretty cool and it’s also great value.
Got my Stoic 4 (Silver with Deore drivetrain) and set it up tubeless in 10 minutes….I timed it. I love the Stoic. I bought it on sale for $1,600+, free shipping. It was here in 3 business days. I ride a lot of other bikes, and agree that the price for what you get is amazeballs! I have had it on a few rides so far and it is bullet proof. I would recommend this bike for those that want a well built bike. Drivetrain, fork, 4-pot brakes….dropper…..heck yeah! Prefer the Deore drivetrain over SX and NX; have had both and swapped them out. Yes, the other Stoic models are great, too. Very upgradeable; all of them. My first Canyon bike and I will definitely buy from them again. Great review video!
so on the stem .. one thing wrong.. that loctite-dri pre-assembly on the fasteners should be in a oxygen environment till you use them. not in the stem in the box. it cured already cause they are anaerobic. most mechanics incorrectly put grease on the threads and non on the bolt head and washer. I did not see you use grease. but I would just remove that loctite with a wire brush re-apply 242 or none and grease the whole thing. it is mostly for consumers that would use nothing. it is removable not reusable.
in Europe you get it in even better spec,dt swiss wheels, full 12s deore drivetrain, sram db8 brakes with 200/180 rotors, but the build quality is bad in these bikes, especially frame quality and finish
QUESTION: Canyons Online Shop says that i need an L Frame and my Wife needs an M Frame for the Stoic. For other brands and other online shops, XL is displayed for a height of 1.88 cm and a leg length of 87.5 cm. Now im not sure if XL is to large for me and L to small. Can someone please help me?
Hello. I have just bought the stoic 4 about 2 weeks ago. I am 190cm tall and have 91cm inseam. I went with the canyon recomandation and I bought the L size. It does not feel small in terms of reach 480mm and also an effective tube length 661mm. The top tube length is 460 and my dropper is set now at around 500mm in height. Adding the crank and the length of the dropper, it fits perfect for my legs. I don't think I need it higher. The XL stoic is 505 reach, 690 effective tube length and 500 top tube. In this case I will need to set the dropper all the way inside the frame to fit my legs. For your inseam might be too tall. I will go with the L in your case.
I'm almost 6.1" and my full suspension bike came with 780mm bars. Even I feel this is a bit wide. As I haven't had any mtb for quite some years I have not cut them yet, because I need to get used to lots of new changes in geometry, and get up to speed on my riding style etc. I do naturally tend to grip slightly in on my grips so my gut tell me I will slice off a cm on each side as well.
Is nx any better these days? Have destroyed more of these than any other and now refuse to get anything less than gx derailleur because it costs more to own nx than gx. Great seeing it put together from box!
I don't think they've changed for years now. I'm curious what's causing yours to get destroyed. Impacts, or just falling apart due to shifting under load, or something else?
@@hardtailparty doubt it’s shifting under load, my slx, xt, and gx are all running fine after years with just normal maintenance and a decent number of kms on em all. If is is any load it’s no different than the others. Xt of course is way better these days at that but slx and gx not. Lbs also mentioned they have more nx and more play on them and friends have had the same. Small sample size and on past nx so not sure. Maybe one day we’ll have nx axs transmission trickle down tech.
Man I love this sage green color. On the site they only sell it in silver right now, any insight on if that will change or if this color is discontinued?

Part of it is that long 170mm dropper they put on, which is awesome.
In the bag, there should have been some extra tubeless valves included by the way. Also here in Europe, they came with DT Swiss wheels and hubs.

Love my roscoe 8. Currently adding gold accents to it. Gonna look sweet!
Yeah. Been waiting for this. I am very close to buying this bike. Looking forward to your ride review.
I also have Stoic 3 and got on sale for same price as yours. I didn’t know it is taped. I will have to look.
Can't wait for the ride review!
I really look forward to the trail ride. I love watching these rides. I keep learning so much. You are a really good rider. Sedona looks like a blast. And thanks to you, I think I could have so much fun riding there. Though, I would walk some of the harder parts! 😃
Look forward to the ride review. That’s what counts.
I ordered a Canyon and it did come with tubeless valves. Check the little bag of goodies again, should be in a little zip loc bag.
Had the stoic 3 and loved it, just sold it to upgrade to a spectral full sus. The stoic was a great introduction for me into mountain biking 😊
Im thinking of ordering one to start riding mtb. Is it worth it? Feels like the best bang for buck right now with 21% discount atm.
@@maxhakansson6173got one?
Stuff that I don’t think is mentioned is that the “bike guard” bike box (the very same box that every bike ever sold comes in) is an additional £18 on top
of the shipping costs.
Congrats on getting one, they're tough to find in stock.
The best color even. Cant wait to see the first impression ride.
Is that a 2022 color? I only see silver now.
i had this for all of 2 months.. absolutely hated how overly stiff it felt. it really beat me up.. I sold it and bought a Ragley Big Al and never looked back..
I have noticed this as well.
@@_mgiles that being said, I think the bike is still great for flowy singletrack.. but add in some chunk and your ankles and knees will hate you.
@@shengao231 it's so brutal on chunky trails. I suspect he's not gonna be a huge fan for that reason. But yes on flow trails it's sick.
I have a Stoic 2 since 2 years. Paid 799euros for it and it's my first "real" MTB. The geometry is nice but the rear end fill very stiff and the fork is quite bad. Pretty interested on full review verdict !
Ragley? Great choice!!
Finally! Well done Steve ❤❤
My stoic 4 2022 last year came with tubes but the DT Swiss wheels came taped and valves within canyons tool pack.
I'm betting they substituted out a few parts through the years due to shortages and i got unlucky to end up with one that didn't have taped rims. Probably a fluke, as it sounds like most others had tubeless ready rims.
Looking forward to your thoughts after getting a ride in! Been eyeing it for a while now
Seat tube slot on the side - never seen that before.
I'd love to review one someday
Boy, this is going to be a long week waiting!
Nice review! Just got mine in Friday! I live it. Great bike! 💪🏼
LOL
😊
Love your channel hardtail party 🙌🏼
I seriously considered ordering this bike as it was a great price and I loved the colour. I went with a trek roscoe 7 though as it was local. Super excited for you!! 😊
It would be great to see the review of Canyon Grand Canyon as well as their alternative XC-ish offering.
I've actually got one in for review too. I'm not a fan of the qr rear axle though.
@@hardtailpartyit's often on sale for $500 or around $550. At those prices I think that's fine but at full price a thru axle would be nice.
Yeah I forgot it's still on qr. I wish they finally updated it like it's electric sibling Gran Canyon:ON. 2023 version got different geo than previous model.
I thank you for the big tyre test🔥🔥🔥
This channel is simple the best, tnx
@@costalcuits discounted right now, atleast in europe 🤭
@@an0nym0ust10 yes I saw that! I checked right after posting the comment and boom it was right there haha

Was one of my top options, ended up with a Devinci Kobain and love it
Glad to hear it.
The newer version came out a few months ago. Not many changed besides deore drivetrain and brakes. Also has a $1899 MSRP.
Man it's beautiful, never ridden a Sram eagle drivetrain, and I would love to run the DB8 brakes instead of the dot fluid brakes.
Great unboxing, really interested in this bike, are you going to be going a ride review?
It’s a great price but it still costs me 350 bucks to ship it to my country. That makes it a lot more expensive than the Roscoe 8. I’d be interested to hear that comparison.
The Stoic 4 last year was NX, so either you got an older one or like you said with supply issues.
I'm betting this is last year's model. This arrived at my place two weeks ago.
Is the 2023 model updated in any way? It’s sad they ditched this color for the update.
Looking forward to the ride review always good video content keep up the good work 👏
would love to see a review of the Wicked Fat Chance Ti !
I'm game to review any modern hardtail.
I got the canyon grand canyon and kinda regret not getting a stoic. Especially if green is available.
Pretty shocked it didn’t come ready for tubeless.
Same here.
Oh man! That thing looks gooood!!
When u gonna review the ride? 🤙
I read that Canyon is now making Titanium frames👍👍
Im 5’9” and they recommend a small . He’s shorter and he’s showcasing the medium
I thought the tubes were installed to protect the rims during transportation? Since the tires aren't inflated.
Plus, it’s one less thing that has to be tied down to keep it from bouncing around in the crate.
Only hardtail that's a better value than my Devinci Kobain 12s. In Canada, this Canyon is 2200 CAD.
Great unboxing, looking forward to the ride test.
Will you have the updated ragley frames in for testing (Marley 290, Big Al and/or Mmmbop)?
I really want to review those, but no luck yet.
so on the stem .. one thing wrong.. that loctite-dri pre-assembly on the fasteners should be in a oxygen environment till you use them. not in the stem in the box. it cured already cause they are anaerobic. most mechanics incorrectly put grease on the threads and non on the bolt head and washer. I did not see you use grease. but I would just remove that loctite with a wire brush re-apply 242 or none and grease the whole thing. it is mostly for consumers that would use nothing. it is removable not reusable.
I have the stoic 3 (love the wine red) but i have to upgrade the sram sx to the nx or even gx. But everything else is a dream for that price.
Is it good for the City too i want to buy it love the Red one too looks so amazing
in Europe you get it in even better spec,dt swiss wheels, full 12s deore drivetrain, sram db8 brakes with 200/180 rotors, but the build quality is bad in these bikes, especially frame quality and finish
@@gadarares2246 me and my 14 year old son are fine with an XL frame. Funny that this bike fits all body heights ;)
Great review!
How does the bike feel on the flats? Like commuting to work, I know that's not what it's for haha
I think I got a 2022 model that is now replaced with silver.r
@@hardtailparty Thanks for the response. Yeah that's what I thought. Still an awesome bike!
