  • My weekday commute from Melbourne's CBD to Ringwood North, about 30km with an average 600m of climbing. Over half of it follows the Koonung Creek Trail, a shared cyclist/pedestrian path that follows the Eastern Freeway through some of Melbourne's eastern suburbs. A very pleasant, scenic commute. I've added captions explaining how long it took me to get to each point, and a description of what's there.

I lost my license for a year and did this ride everyday, (stayed on the path for 3 more ks)
It was honestly the best year ever, I lost weight, felt great at work, more in touch with the seasons. I didn't miss my car at all.
Then got my license back and fell into lazy habits, I'm lucky to ride once a week in spring/summer now :(

My commuter bike is a Vivente World Randonneur touring bike, very reliable, tough and ideal for commuting (I've done 57,000km on it in 4 years 3 months).

Great video. I've been trying to work out where you are after Clarendon Street and how to get there. I live inner city but want to reach that trail for a decent ride on a regular basis. Thanks for the tips, I enjoyed it.

Marc North I don't think the yarra trail was completed when evictorr took this video. Its now possible to follow the main yarra trail until it crosses a bridge onto yarra blvd. Then ride on Yarra blvd until it ends at chandler highway and cross the road to the yarra trail next to the guide dogs centre. That trail continues onto ringwood all the way to patterson lakes if you have the energy. I returned cbd via nepean highway from patterson lakes.

Great trail. Scotchman's Creek route is getting rather busy so it's a nice alternative.

Wow, that a huge ride to be doing every weekday! Good on you though, have you considered using a hybrid electric bicycle to make your journeys quicker and easier?

No, soon enough for that when I very old and decrepit. I enjoy the pedaling too much, and doing 14 hours of commuting per week doesn't bother me at all.

Great vid. I know that path well. But sshh, keep it to yourself. We don't want more traffic. Let the great unwashed stick to their freeway.
