Tim is exactly how I pictured him. Lean, strong, smart, and a true sailor. A man of few words. When he speaks, people listen. Thank you for the interview. 👏
I concur, I hoped they might talk more about specific aspects of the boat design. Although you got Tims design philosophy from the interview. Keep it light and "Just go sailing".
What a class act that Tim Mumby. He avoided speaking ill of other boats. He is clear about his priorities in life. He recommends keeping it simple instead of going for the loaded and expensive route, even though that would make him more money. Its a shame he isn't taking more orders, he seems like a builder you can trust.
Great to see Tim...just building boats on the shore..simple and effective and producing the boat most true multihull sailors want...he certainly has his priorities right !!! Memories over money ! His crew looking very happy building them too
Never though Tim would do an interview- you must be a very persuasive bloke Jamie. Awesome interview! Do you have any other bits that didn’t make the first cut?
There's nothing scary about dual helms such as on a Catana. In fact its often the favourite place to be, particularly night watches. Many Catanas have been around the world, in comfort and respectable speed.
LOL Gimballed spice rack. Geeking out on all the Oz-speak. But seriously loved the interview. Wish it could have been a bit longer, but you both covered the major points. These are safe and performant boats meant for families crossing oceans, not condomaran charter boats. Tim's done plenty of crossings and built a boat after his priorities learned from that.
Interesting to see Tim again. He was around Shelter Cove in Hong Kong in the ‘80’s in that green steel mono and where I suspect he got to appreciate the performance of multis in the form those Marples tris Papillon and Pacific High I’m guessing his yard is up near Danao?
Great interview with Tim. Really liked how Tim didn't have anything negative to say about plastic production boats. He does his thing and that's all that matters.
There are many different ways to do boats, and they all have their own tradeoffs. Plastic is very durable, but arguably bad for the environment. Aluminum is also durable due to the oxides formed. Aluminum is also highly recycled and recyclable. Plastic composites, not so much.
Pretty cool watching you and your wife traveling from place to place interacting with people that you know shows a different side of you both Tim Mumby seems like a pretty cool guy laidback and interesting but then again all your people that you go around are laid back thanks for the share see you next time pretty cool
Great interview and I am impressed with the sailing experience of Tim and how he used his experience to design practical and real world factors into his design. I am sorry he is no longer building boats but his design is available for other shipyards to build, although the cost will be dramatically increased from what was available from his yard in the Philippines due to lower costs of construction there. Looking forward to more videos from the Jupiter.
Great to see Tim and Jessica again. We've been friends for many years now since a chance meeting in South Africa. Come on Tim we're waitiing out here for you.
It would be great to have more footage and info about what seems to be the new version of Mumby48, seen at 8:54 . It seems to have a "squarish" salon, which would allow for more versatile use of internal space, and better heat/sunlight management.
I like the hinged rudder system you have , and I wanted to say you can illuminate the shear pins with powerful magnets with equal strength to shear pin. So if it bumps up it will automatically seat itself .
Jamie, Great chat with Tim. What are the key changes that Tim has made in his newer boat designs compared with your boat? 1. I see these new boats in the yard have vertical bows, which will increase the waterline slightly? 2. Do the newer boats have more stringers for additional strength in the hull, and does this increase the displacement weight slightly? 3. The boat in harbour with a single diesel and electric drive. Do you have any additional equipment information on this boat? I agree with you on the KISS principle. However, Beta/Nanni do motors with 24V DC starters and generators, all instruments can be brought with 24V DC, and today you do need a 3kW AC inverter onboard for many electrical power services. The downside of sailing cats in the past is having to need two diesel drive systems with its additional maintenance issues. Thanks for getting the interview with Tim.
Nice a thank you for sharing always enjoy watching your videos boatyard had a lot of boats in it he has a good trade there anyways God bless you both stay safe❤
Great interview! That was a great question you asked Tim about electric engines. After watching Peter of Sailing into Freedom talking about electric and saying that he could actually do the Elcano World Challenge, I thought of getting some Ocean Volt shaft driven engines with no generator and a bunch of solar power so that I could do the same thing without having to carry the weight of diesel fuel. I'm still going to look into it but now I'm sort of leaning to the Yanmar 30's that Tim installs as standard equipment. I also suspect that the Ocean Volt shaft driven engines are really expensive and I might not be able to afford that. I really like the new bow design and didn't know that he had done that. I'm also interested in how the 50 sails. Is it a smoother ride and is the boat wider than the 48? Thanks.
Tim should invest in a waterjet or even a cnc plasma table since pricing has gone way down and there is so many used ones available on the market. It would pay for itself in a very short period of time and it would increase precision greatly. With a waterjet they could cut out plastic for windows, fiberglass interior panels and just about anything else.
I have recently found your video after researching performance cats and coming across your video about the Mumby, which I'm in love with btw. But saw "nearly home" was Chiapas MX. I am currently in Banderas Bay preparing to cross to French Polynesia. I was just curious where you are now? If our paths ever cross I'd love to come look at Jupiter.
Well will give Mr. T Mumby a pat on the Back for his design of the Cat , But when it comes to a interview forget it's like looking at grass growing lol . And just a though why not Apply for a AUSTRALIAN Passport while your in Australia for your Wife ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????.

Tim might consider selling the company so others would have access to this fabulous boat. Seems like there is a market for them.
Love the Mumby
What a legend been waiting for this interview for 20yrs could have listened for days 🖒all the best cheers
Great to see the passion for sailing as the only driver for what Tim Mumby does. He’s a rare breed.

Thank you. Great interview and love the insights and thoughts behind the boat design. Humbling.

Isn’t Plucky trying to build a Mumby in Greece??🤟🏼🤟🏼🇦🇺
Hi guys, I’ve searched high and low and wonder if you can help with advising about headroom in various areas inside the boat? Many thanks.
You should have asked him about the ODC 48
This was a great video guys . . thinking outside the circle.
Nice Video, Thanls for the effort. Cheers.
Tim mentioned there are a few company’s building these boats do you guys have any contact details for these company’s?
I was looking for a John Pugh 40+...... haha. Never thought about gimble spice rack, though.
Great video, always great!

I got all super enthusiastic about a build and now that dream seems to have had the carpet pulled with the boat yard shutdown.
I will buy one. Tim Mumby should have a website.

Sea if Cortez! Ya, the Mumby is an awesome design.
Watched it twice !
Can Tim or yourself recommend alternate aluminium boat yards in the region or beyond?
gimbled spice racks! lol
Almost an aluminium wharram, hope you're out there sailing Tim...
What’s their contact info so we can buy their plans? What’s the difference between the 48 and this new 50?
Not sure when you recorded this, been quite cold in Brissie the last few weeks (yeah yea cold by Brissie standards 🤣)
wow, I like your boat! it is good
Maybe a little off the subject, but what do you think of building an aluminum sailboat in the Philippines?
i gonna get one one this global crisis is over!
Plukky from sailing into freedom is working with a company called Odisea to build a great looking Aluminium performance Cat
Anybody know how to contact Tim?? Nothing in description.
