    MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
    Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
    Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
    Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
    Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
    Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
    Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
    Video of icebox:
    Video of Gas Refrigerator:
    Propane Freezer:
    Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

    In a mans heart there are some things that will never leave him. Two of which are the love for the woods and his carpentry tools. I left the trade after 35 yrs. but I cannot part with my tools. My father taught my son to build feeders and roosts, and will one day teach his. Great vid.

    Hi Boss,
    Videos like this are a simple pleasure to watch and enjoy. I too feed the birds and other creatures. Kind of like friends except my dogs keep them on there toes like Frankie. It says a lot, that trappers are some of the best friends of the woods. Thanks for another great video. Always a joy to watch and thanks for sharing. Pete

    Nature is amazing isn't she? I think trappers are the ultimate appreciators of nature and her citizens as we notice things like the nests that others don't.
    To me, if I may offer my unsolicited thoughts on the matter, these videos are really great educational videos about woodworking - with a birdhouse as the backdrop.
    I would like to suggest that you do a "Basic Woodworking" series of videos over the off season. You have a true gift not only for wood working, but also for teaching. I learned a lot about using the speed square in this video as I'm one of those who doesn't have a lot of fancy tools; but would still like to do some of these projects.
    The next project you tackle you could turn into a series - about tools, techniques, different cuts, joins, etc. I'm sure people would value your opinion on what tools are good, what you absolutely need, what you can live without, etc. Just a thought.
    I'm off to do a beaver job and throw out a turtle trap. Going to see if the snappers are hungry yet! Take care my friend.

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  11 лет назад

      That's a really good idea buddy, I just may do that. Thank you for the suggestion. I'd e interested in some Alabama land, something with water, either a river, stream or pond on it. You could be my caretaker. From your vids it looks like you have some nice country there and your climate would be a nice escape during the late winter.

    Nature is the only place where I have ever found true peace! I cannot even explain the feeling.. its like being closer to God or maybe heaven! In my mind I can hear the birds and the chattering squirrels. I creek bed is nice also.. nothing can lull me to sleep faster than the sounds of a creek rushing to parts unknown! You have a awesome life and I can tell you cherish it and are a great steward of the land! Love the bird houses..I use to make gourd bird houses and bird feeders so I know how wonderful it feels to give homes and food to God's creations! Keep up the good work! Blessings!

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  11 лет назад

      You definitely share my views on life Abby. I always enjoy your comments.
      The best nighttime sounds to sleep by is the spring peepers. My screenhouse is down by my marsh and it has a small fireplace thingy in it so can enjoy a fire at night without the bugs. I have a futon couch in it and there's nothing like kicking back in the glow of the fire and enjoy the chorus of night sounds. Life is truly what you make of it. All the best to you.

    • @1994abbygirl
      @1994abbygirl 11 лет назад

      Tell me what a spring peeper is?? The night time sounds we have are crickets here! Last fall I was at my folks,it was evening and the cricket noise was the loudest I had ever heard ever.. I felt like I was in a marsh...then I kept seeing them in the garage, but then when one ended up in my room singing to me I was flabbergasted. I turned the light on and he was on a decorative pillow sitting alongside of the dresser. I tried to catch him three times to no avail.. my 80 year old father tried to catch him also. Finally I just went to bed, but the minute I turned off the light he began his serenade. I tried again to catch him.. its one thing to hear them outside, but inside a closed room is not at all delightful! Still no luck, finally I tried again to go to sleep.. next I heard a bag rattling.. he had crawled into a bag of things I had purchased.. I closed it shut quickly and took him outside.. I just dumped the whole bag on the ground.. funny little thing turned and faced me like I had insulted him.. I think I angered him for taking him from the comforts of a warm room.In any case I finally got to sleep! Last year though was a over abundance of crickets.. they were dying off but were going out singing. Just as it should be for all of God's creations!

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  11 лет назад

      1994abbygirl Cute story Abby, thanks for sharing that. I love cricket sounds. The peepers are the tiny frogs that live in the marsh out here. You can hear lots of them in one of my cabin videos I posted last spring. I think "peepers" are what they are actually named and never heard them called anything else. I love the night noise... everything but the damn whippoorwills. I can live without them.

    • @1994abbygirl
      @1994abbygirl 11 лет назад

      thebossoftheswamp Well like the sound of crickets too,but not in my room.. amazing how loud they can be! I will look for video, here we just call peepers frogs are they tiny or smaller than frogs...I like your name better.. sounds more original. Funny how across the country we use different names for things! I have never heard whipporwills in the wild.. my sister lived in WY and she loved them..I have heard them on tv though and I think after awhile I would be like you..it to me would sound like a broken record saying the same three words over and over again. Have a blessed night!

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  11 лет назад

      1994abbygirl Peepers are very tiny but have a big voice and their chorus is very soothing. I don't mind whippoorwills when they are off in the distance but when they are near the house and whipoorwilling before dawn, with that fast paced repetitious whippoorwill whippoorwill whippoorwill whippoorwill bullpoopy, well... I'd settle for a cricket in my room.
      What part of the country are you in?

I have a cabin in NH that is 1.5 miles off the pavement and there's a good chance I will be moving there and bouncing back and forth between my 2 cabins. I don't need my homestead anymore. Just about everything will be for sale soon.

    How did I miss Part 1?? I did not get a notice :))) I've been wondering "now why don't he write" :))) Yes, I just watched Dancing with Wolves". Many memories of my sweet mom, she loved bird nests also. I'd cut our hair and she's save the hair to put out in the Spring for the birds to use in the nests. Also she'd give them all the long strings I'd cut off my fresh washed quilt fabric. She would get such a kick out of watching them come get her bits and pieces and fly off to build their nests. Thanks JC for sharing such simple pleasures :)))

      I try to face most of them south east. The one that held the cool nest was actually facing north. I hung it on the barn because it looked like a good spot but had my doubts it would be used since it faced north. They probably used it cause all the other boxes were full.

    JC, you know I always seem to learn something from your videos. When you were talking about birds and describing the Phoebe building it's nest under the house eve or above a window, I thought you were actually talking about a swallow. But, I went to the dictionary and low and behold there it was. A Phoebe is a member of the fly-catcher family and does build nests under house eves and above windows. Thank you my friend, another excellent and educational video. - Chris

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  11 лет назад

      Yes they are. We have the Eastern Flycatcher as well as the Phoebe here. The Phoebe's are notorious for nesting on the trim above windows. They can be a bit of a nuisance with that but these shelves will help put them where I want them.
      As always, I appreciate your comments.

    Another good tip for marking 15 degrees( if you don't have a speed square) is to measure one inch from the end of the board,( along the edge, one inch from the corner) then four inches up from that mark( accross the board) . Using a straight edge, or scrap of wood, place it on the corner and your four inch mark.... Draw a line.. It's 15 degrees.

    Hi there fella, me and the hubby are down at his building building BIRDHOUSES, lol. We enjoy your videos so much and when I was watching about the birdhouses I wanted hubby to help me build some. Well, of course he did the most with the big ole saw and all, but I helped still. He's finishing up the last one of 7. they are so cute. I wanted to send you a picture but I haven't seen your email address. I've heard you talk of getting emails tho. Anyway if your address is for your subscribers, I'd like to send you a pic of the birdhouses. Hubby watched your video and marked down the measurements. We didn't have any pine but there was lots of poplar at his mom's that was just ruining anyway, so we used it. He said they wouldn't last good but still they are cute and will last a while. He put aluminum flashing on the roofs to help preserve them. How about that, the houses have metal roofs, lol. We also picked up a couple suet blocks and trays and a bunch of bird seed. See what you've done, lol, you've got us into working with the birds. Thx so much and keep those videos coming.

    JC: I never knew that that particular bird could stucco LOL It's amazing to me how much all animals know, and not being shown how to do it. I have a twelve inch double compound Dewalt chop box but it's not on tubes, the saw lost its guard and the brake didn't engage quick enough and I was repositioning a lattice trim board and bumped the blade with my right hand, now i've been using a chop box for years with no guard, but it only takes one time to do something careless, anyway I cut my index and middle finger through both knuckles, took 5 stitches ea. So I wanted to tell your subscribers to please be careful with their equipment and not get hurt like me... Bud

    I really like those designs boss. Will have to make some of my own. That robins nest is amazing to me too. Have you made any bat boxes? I'd like to make one but I'm not sure where to hang it. Not any really good spots for one on my property here in suburbia. I do see them though flying around the street lights gorging themselves on bugs in the summer.

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  11 лет назад

      I would think that on the side of any structure would work. They'll slip into tiny cracks in roof trim and places like that. Probably wouldn't matter where you hung it. If you build it - they will come.

    You're amazing. Thanks for showing how to make the bird houses without the fancy saw. I think most don't have your type of equipment. Well, I don't. That nest is amazing. Isn't it something that humans have been so dumbed down that we (not you) can't make our own habitat's, but bird's (small brained animals) know how to make shelter's for themselves? Something's not quite right about that. That nest would make a great planter. Perhaps you could install a round piece of styrofoam with needle sized holes in it for drainage, at the bottom of the next and plant seeds or a plant in it. Beautiful. You make me smile. Thanks.

  • @cabincreek1692

    So what do you do about Carpenter Bees? Every year has been a challenge and I hate having to pay the exterminator money to spray our log cabin with poisons to eradicate them. One of my patient's made me a bee trap (looks like a bird house) that is working like a charm. I've caught five bees in two days.

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  10 лет назад

      I have small dark colored bees that are attracted to all the cracks between my wood shingles and any hole in the wood. I didn't have these bees in NH but have then here. Not sure if these are what you are referring to. They appear for a very short time and I slap as many as I can with a fly swatter. I kill a lot of them. We have a survival game going.

    I think we're calling the wrong creatures 'bird brains'....I know humans who can't cook, don't know how to sew, can't change the oil in their car or a flat tire if they were stranded on a back road at 11 in the night....and these little feathered friends build amazing homes that last and last, gather their own food and feed their young...know just when to fly to warmer temps and, back when it gets TOO warm.....and yea, we call them 'bird brains'. I just can't figure'em out!
