    Best comparison I've seen yet. I ended up buying the BD240 Pro and have zero regrets thus far. I've been comparing it side-by-side by the Sennheiser HD280 PRO and the Audio Technica ATH-M50x and am having a really tough time ranking them! I would say that the obvious negative, like you mentioned, is the ear cup size. Aside from that, the neutral sound and great overall response is great. I don't do much, if any, engineering or recording, but I have been thinking I may get into that one day soon and purchased these in preparation. Thanks again for your review!

    Finally, an honest review! I agree with almost all points. These headphones are definitely on the warmer side. Bass response is good, but sometimes the lows overtake treble and highs (which leaves a mushy impression, especially listening to acoustic guitar, take Ben Harper as an example). For music listening, I had to tweak the headphones with an equaliser (lower a bit the bass and accentuate treble), that done, they sound pretty good. They are good headphones, but out of the box, I prefer the DT770 Pro 250 ohm (less pronounced bass and clearer highs), but these are too beefy for on-the-go use. The DT240 are excellent for recording on-the-go. If you don't mind using an equaliser, they are a no-brainer.

      For testing use.an amp and private investigations from Dire Straits. Plenty going on there to make a good judgement. Frequency is not guide for quality. hate to see you go sir.

  • @WeatherStationZ41
    @WeatherStationZ41 6 лет назад +2

    Tyll, how would you compare these to the ATH-M40X? I have heard those are pretty flat and good for beginner producers for the price. I know you compared to the M50X in the video but the M50X's are notoriously V-shaped.
    So any thoughts on ATH-M40X vs DT 240 Pro vs HD 470i ?

    • @andrasnelhiebel6726
      @andrasnelhiebel6726 6 лет назад +5

      I never understood this thing that is going around the internet that the M40x is more neutral than the M50x. I compared them several times, and the M50x always came a winner to me as the M40x has more bloated bass and definitively reduced upper midrange. It puts the vocals way behind other components compared to the M50x which is right upfront. This is why it is more easy on the ears, and my guess would be this is why more consumer oriented reviews find it appealing, but the minute you start comparing them in studio environment as I did, it is clearly obvious which one is closer to flat.
      Anyway the 240Pro sounds quite near to the M40x, it is just less comfortable with the small pads. Both are warm bassy sounding, the treble being more present on the M40x. The 471i is very midrange sounding lacking both bass and treble. If you use them just for casual listening choose according to your taste. But if you plan to work save up some money and buy an M50x (V-shaped fun), an SRH840 (laid back smooth) or a K550 (midrange). You can mix on all of them, when you know them well. Neither of them is perfect, but good enough. I think the most neutral is the K553, but I like the treble response and the transient dynamics of the M50x better.

    • @WeatherStationZ41
      @WeatherStationZ41 6 лет назад

      I've never had the chance to listen to any of them, so I trust you on this. I just find it interesting that after comparing these these two graphs from the same source, the M40x and M50x don't even look all that different.
      reference-audio-analyzer.pro/report/hp/audio-technica/audio-technica-ath-m40x/Audio-Technica_ATH-M40x_Center_-_-_HDM-X__-90_20-20k-__spl.png

      Not many measurements of the 240Pro yet, and Tyll doesn't have any on the M40x so I couldn't compare. Relative to the M50x the bass on the 240 seems more bloated/warm as the review states, and I really would rather have as flat as possible. I haven't even heard of the K553, so I'll check them out. Thanks for your comment, I'd appreciate any other thoughts you have on mixing/production headphones that you'd recommend.

    • @andrasnelhiebel6726
      @andrasnelhiebel6726 6 лет назад +1

      They are not worlds apart, bothof them are V-shaped, just the peak around 2-5k is what it makes a better vocal definition on the M50x.
      Here are some other measurements that prove what I say.
      www.kopfhoerer.de/test/audio-technica-ath-m50-x/
      www.kopfhoerer.de/test/audio-technica-ath-m40x/
      Though I have to admit you should be careful with measurements. Unless you have a consistent pool of well performed measurements (e.g. IF), and know how to interpret them, you can prove basically anything by tweaking them. I only trust IF and to some degree Kopfhoerer.de as I could identify many of the differences in the measurements with my own ears.
      The M40x is solid for the price, but I think the M50x is a worthy upgrade. The DT770 comes also in my mind as a very detailed and airy sounding alternative, but that is INSANELY V-shaped. The Yamaha HPH-MT8 is also a contender as a very comfy less bassy headphone, though there is a dip around 2k which makes them sound a bit boxey. And if you have the chance to save up some money and buy someting truly magnificent, I would go for the AKG K712 Pro as it kills in dynamics, resolution and soundstage basically everything I have heard under 1000 Euros.
      From what I have experienced in the audio world so far is, that you should educate yourself, compare and trust your own ears. Take every advice - mine included - with a grain of salt, and choose accroding your own taste. You can work on anything that has good detail retrieval, and comfy enough work long hours with them. Those are more inportant than the sound signature itself.That can be corrected by EQ/Sonarworks/refernce tracking, etc.

    • @WeatherStationZ41
      @WeatherStationZ41 6 лет назад +1

      I had the DT770 for about a few days, then I sent them back. Couldn't handle the V. I'm amazed that even to this day people online will claim they have a flat response.
      HPH-MT8 sounds really interesting but I can't seem to find any measurements anywhere. I'll read some reviews. The K712s though are open, and I've been looking for a quality open set as well. How you think the AKGs compare to say the classic Sennheiser HD600s? (still prioritizing flatness but I suppose I probably shouldn't)

    • @jopar3292
      @jopar3292 6 лет назад

      Good point but Brainwavz can often increase the distance between pad and the diaphragm which in 'some' cases can be quite to subtly detrimental. Also different materials and their construction can and often as not do change the characteristics of a headphone

    Wall of Fame changes makes more sense now. Headphones have no business being in the multi-thousand dollars market.
    Focal Utopia are no longer the "Best headphone in the world", and rightfully so because of what's been known for quite some time that production units were different than reviewed cherry-picked unit.
    Audeze LCD-4 has too many complaints about driver failures for such an expensive piece of electronics.
    Stax SR-009 was retired while the newer Sonoma that has more peculiarities to its sound replaced them on the top? This one I don't get.

    • @akshat3516
      @akshat3516 6 лет назад +2

      MFHRaptor Tyll is kind of a hype beast, first he fanboyed over SR 009 on Bhse and now he thinks they are forward on a far inferior amplifier called kgssre.
      Focal Utopia was never the best, the electrostats are still technically superior (not taking tonal preferrences into account) it was mostly a new toy syndrome, the newest and costliest headphone is always deemed the best and I hate this trend. And with the introduction of the new 6K hifiman susvara, he will probably call it the best too.
      As much as I like tyll, his reviews aren't that helpful and the wall of fame is a joke. He does provide the measurements which helps somewhat unlike the other sellout reviewers.

    • @MFHRaptor
      @MFHRaptor 6 лет назад

      Danger Don Heh, similar frequency response to SR 009 and also bit less neutral, if tyll thought sr 009s were bit bright then you can bet that he would also think the L700 is bright (even more so than 009).

    I don't think I use or have ever used ANY equipment in the studio with the words 'PRO' in its name! ;) - It almost seems like a gimmick to try to sell to people who are not 'pro' :D Also, as Tyll says they are missing the ability to accurately portray the sound that is there, especially around the treble which is where the vocals are and is where semi pro people need to work !?

    • @jopar3292

      :) Yes, sorry bit misleading! I mean for females the treble energy part of the vocal can go quite far into the 'treble' area of the frequency range. Im just thinking that as sibilance is a potential part of female vocals to be aware of, to have a big dip around the treble area wouldn't [in some cases] be very helpful. Well spotted though - Been a long day :)
