As a man of words, like Mr. Cavett, I can hardly think of a more apt and complimentary adjective for a man like Groucho Marx. He indeed was one of a kind! Notice how he often would say something negative but would then counter it with a compliment. It was important to him to make a point of that because he understood that it would be too easy to just toss around jabs or insults and that wasn't at all good enough for him. It's a critical distinction between he and some of those comics who came after.
Cavett says he shouldn't have mentioned the restaurant. I just googled it and The Colony was a steakhouse and seafood restaurant in NYC and shut down 2 years after this aired
I love Groucho like a Grandfather. I watched him with my Grandmother who raised me and while I didn't understand a thing @ that age, I delighted seeing her with tears in her eyes from giggling. Fast forward to now, I think he is so witty and charming 💖
No one like him before or since. Apparently despite his success, he had a sad life. I think it was Dick Cavett who shortly after his death said, “Groucho suffered from depression. I think it was because he was the only person in the world that didn’t have a Groucho”.
Incredibly sad comments by people on here who obviously have zero sense of humour. Groucho was without doubt a comic genius. He and his brothers are light years ahead of any comedy act in the history of comedy. It's clear the ridiculous comments on here by people who don't appreciate Groucho's humour comes because they do not have the mental capacity to understand his refined humour.
Oh. From the title I was expecting a rather different, more gruesome video. The host's name is Richard, then, I presume? Why not call him Richard then? Or Rick? Or Rich? Or something other than the dangly bit. The past really is a very strange place.
As a Groucho fan, it took me watching the Marx brothers movies and learning more about the vaudeville tradition, censorship of the day, and 'reading between the lines.' I found that he and the Marx were masters of sideways, irreverent, dirty, absurd, humor and were jester prophets in the best sense. Like Pryor, Dangerfield, Newhart, Hope, and others Groucho and the Marx open the doors of better understanding our history, culture, and humor.
People who read and who are not literal-minded seem better able to appreciate the highly verbal surreal absurdity that informs most of Groucho's conversation. (Others find humor in The Three Stooges or Milton Berle.) In earlier years Groucho was also a great, PHYSICAL comedian as well.
@Magpie I did not say "highly verbal humor". I did indicate, though, that the literal-minded were not likely to understand or become fans of Groucho Marx. Nonetheless it is possible that you got Groucho mixed up with Karl. The latter really WAS cruel and abusive.
Enjoy a little laugh with the hilarious Groucho Marx, just in time for Christmas!
Come on the episode is much longer. You must be holding out for more money
“And I’d like to thank you for all the joy you’ve taken out of it.” Bless! 😂

Classic humor rolls right out.

Groucho was an Icon and a comic genius; he always got the last word in... You are missed still to this day...
Still pulling off his quick wit at 79 years of age quite incredible
Rest in powerful peace 🙏

Groucho. Pure genius 👍🏼
Groucho was one of the funniest men ever.
was he taking a holiday from funny that night?
Dick Cavett looks like a teenager! Such a great host for many years.
You can really see the resemblance to Chico and Harpo in Groucho's older face. They were wonderful together and individually.
I still love the Marx Brothers.
I'm currently introducing my grandkids to their movies.
Thanks for posting this! I needed the post-holiday laughs.
Great interview. Love the insight Harpo’s autobiography gives you on Groucho and their family.

Thanks for posting 😜🤣

Groucho had to be an idol of Larry David?

Dick was the name that he went by. Many entertainers named Richard used the name Dick.
Most people named Richard were called Dick ! What ignorance.. and hints of a puerile mind ?
he doesn't seem that funny
I keep hearing how great he is but don't see it.

@Magpie When was he belittling someone with nasty sarcasm?
