Thanks very much, Dale. I feel better than I have in years. The knee operation and meds for rheumatoid arthritis have been a huge relief.

Canola is a very popular crop around here a well.

I understand it is quite lucrative for the farmers. Canola oil is very popular in Germany.

The first thing I thought was how pretty and green it is. It is still green here too but we are having a stretch of 100 degree plus days.
And that makes Hay Fever bad for a lot of folks . Great to hear you're doing well after your surgery. Have a great week Bruce, take care my friend

Thanks, I replied to your comment, but somehow my reply must have gone into the bit-bucket. Thanks for coming along. I really appreciate it. We have been having unusually hot weather, too. We are not used to 85 or 90 °F weather. I am feeling great, Lloyd. The new knee is truly a godsend. Cheers.

Hello, I fell down a RUclips "rabbit hole" looking at other's people's subscriptions and happened upon this video. I saw also your "50th anniversary" video and heard you say you were originally from Hammond, Indiana, the same town that Writer, Satirist, Jean Shepherd came from, who grew up on 2907 Cleveland Street. Shep is the author of the cult movie "A Christmas Story", as well as several books and short stories, as well as being a radio personality in the 60's and 70's. I wonder if you had heard of him? Your 50th anniversary vid reminded me of Shep's musings, and I got the feeling from your "50th" that growing up in Hammond, IN had a similar effect on you as it apparently did to Shep. Well anyway, I thought that you might get a kick out of the fact that people personally recorded Shep from on-air radio in the 60's and 70's, and that you might enjoy listening to a fellow "Hammondtonian." ...Silent Shep and Dapper Gent are two you tubians who have channels with recordings of Shep's on-air musings, and here is one link that I just happened to listen to today: ruclips.net/video/U6wOfo1Cwa4/видео.html

Jean (W9QWN) tutored me by mail so I could get my amateur radio license when I was just 11 years old. If I remember correctly he had gotten his license at a young age, too. I met him when I was just 5 years old as I played my clarinet on WJOB in Gary and he had a program on that station. He moved to Ohio shortly after that and my dad (a professional musician) remained in contact with him. I asked him for help with the ham radio stuff and he was very kind to help me pass the test.
Later on, when I was in my late teens my friends and I listened almost exclusively to WFMT, Chicago's classical music station. On Saturday evening we never missed the "Midnight Special" and Ray Nordstrand often played Shep's content from WOR in NY.
Although I didn't have a bad life in Hammond and Calumet City, I never felt at home there and left for Europe as soon as I got my degree from Purdue. I only returned to visit my parents twice and once in 1999 to show my German wife the home I grew up in in Cal City at 240 Ruth Street.
Thanks for writing. I hadn't thought of Jean Shepherd in years. The last time I saw him was when he visited in the late 1950s.

@@BruceBoschek - Thanks for replying. I got a little misty-eyed about your connection to him and to hear that Shep "Paid-forward" his Ham radio experience to you. There are several "vids" on youtube of Shep talking about his Ham Radio experiences (one of them about his gear getting hit by lightning, and another about some "big-time" Hams somewhat paying-forward to him.) I hope you find the time to enjoy those as much as I did. I am pretty sure that other people would also get a kick, as I just did, about you commenting on those vids about your experience with Shep...My father tried to get me to listen to Shep in those days, but I was in my mid-teens, and was more interested in listening to baseball games and music rather than adult humor, so I am thankful that others took the time to record Shep so that I could hear him today...I very much enjoyed you "taking us for a ride" to the Dump, er, I mean to the "Green recycling center" ha ha.... I was struck by several things... I didn't see any Gas (petrol), Grocery stores, or Home Depots, strip malls, 7-11's, Targets or Walmarts...I am curious as to how difficult it must be for you to fuel your car, or bring groceries and building supplies to your home for the restoration... I heard you talking after you unloaded your car. I am almost 65 years old and am becoming aware of my upcoming limitations...take care.

@@cmans79tr7 Thanks. I will look at the videos when I find some time and comment appropriately. One of the things that I love about Germany is the strict zoning laws. Grocery stores, filling stations and the like are within city limits. Our village has only a bakery and a small post office, but Alsfeld is just 10 km away and it has 6 supermarkets, at least 8 filling stations, hospital, 6 car dealerships, including a big Mercedes car and truck centre, veterinarians, medical specialists, 2 home-worker centres with machine rentals, many restaurants, etc. For people who live in our village and don't have a car (there may be one or two) there are buses and so-called "city cars" that are much more affordable than taxis. Fueling our cars is not a problem aside from the US$ 9.50/ gallon price of gas. We started completely rebuilding our home when I was 65. I'm now 80 and with rheumatoid arthritis I definitely am limited in movement, but I still get around and have fun. Thanks for your interest.
