Jules, consciousness including humans, is most likely an extra dimensional quantum substance that mirrors(or if a pattern is encooded can create/replicate) the properties of whatever material and energetic substance it interacts with and transfers the sum of the exchange back and forth throughout its own quantity eg wave motions, including the mass of whatever other quantities of "consciousness" it is directly connected to (like "electricity" or fluids.)
Only the forms/shapes it assumes will limit the scope and timescales of its interactions, and being extradimensional its limitation of time is only relative to the volume/shape and quantum position of the connections. In other words consciousness only needs a medium for specific expression of qualities but quantitatively it likely exists simultaneously everywhere in everything in its range of existence, like gravity or light/electricity. (which goes to your option of extending to/from the center of the universe.)
So in more-other-words, consciousness, a vibrant universal energy/quantum substance, when it inhabits a human and or other living things(eg cells) assumes the qualities and potentialities of that living thing ambiently but remains connected as a substance/force to the entire "field" of consciousness as a qualitative force, especially through the material interactions of its "host" with other consciousness compatible substances.
In this way all things are potentially connected but living thinking things can actually SEEK or PREFER to "experience", enhance, and shape/direct the substance/connection of consciousness through various energies including and especially "consciousness itself. Incidentally or willfully thinking/sentient beings can perceive/interact with inherent compatible patterns "their" conscious energy is or has been connected to... generally, limited with respect to the appropriate time scale relative to the existence of the being but not necessarily.) Its easier to perceive the past of your world than its future because of YOUR relationship with time not your consciousness's.
eg Consciousness flowing through thought patterns and vibrations can retain the shape /frequency of those patterns until it is disrupted by another shape /pattern of consciousness or assumes another vessel, but having already been encoded with such properties could easily or spontaneously (eg existing in a space but in absence of an appropriate vessel) resume the most appropriate shape/properties it has been encoded with relative to whatever quantity of substances are also available.
To illustrate, I imagine the disembodied voice of a human (transported by conscious energy...lets say by quantum entanglement) singing in a cloud of dust in space would form a human shaped cloud of dust in its wake. (the cloud formation would be provoked by conscious energy remembering the shape and properties of the being that originated the voice.) Thats my guess.
