Hi, Thanks for the videos. When I double click on my new track it opens up the piano roll just like you did but , on the left hand side I'm seeing a keyboard and not the blanks where I can import the drum names. What am I doing Wrong? Thanks!
Beautifully explained in noob terms for people like me, nice video resolution good volume and no annoying music in the backgroundg...ohhh my God! Thanks!
This should be the standard on how to make a tutorial. It was so incredibly helpful. I'm not kidding, I was able to record my first drum track immediately after watching this video. All using headphones without disturbing my neighbors. And I've never studied drums before. So thank you so much and all the best!
Hi, thanks for tutorial, just a little feedback - 8:30 when you select to quantize only selected notes, it actually unquantizes your other notes, that you have already quantized (kick, snare).
GOOD I'm starting and I've seen dozen of videos on HOW TO on your DAW.... This is the first one that actually worked. You get to the point, mention critical things, don't waste time on silly things and don't spend time showing off how cool you are and how awesome and incredible things you can do. Great video. 10 minutes were I actually did learn something.
Finally! I was honestly getting very aggravated trying to figure this out on my own, and most reaper tutorials are kinda annoying and telling me stuff ive already figured out. I subscribed immediately. Thank you.
You’re my new god! I spent so many days reading forums and messing around and could not get my Alesis Strike Pro kit to record on Reaper. Thanks so much for this tutorial. So simple and it’s all working!
Hi there...its 2020 (i know right..!!??!! ) and this video is still extremely useful...just watched it and am going to utilize virtually every single concept mentioned here on Reaper this very night. I hadn't even looked into it yet and i noticed this on the sidebar and thought 'ooh thats timely'....i laughed when i saw the video was 5 years old...it was released just in time for me to find it five years later..... Phew !!! that was lucky...
Covered every question I had about setting up drum grooves in Reaper. Very well done. See comment below about the fact that when you quantized the hand claps, you actually "unquantized" the other drums. Something else handy to know is that once you have set up the groove, you can send different notes to different channels and use the Reasampler, Slate Trigger etc. to use different drums sounds for each drum. It takes a bit to set up but once it's done you can reuse it.
Thank you very much for the drums tutorial in Reaper. I am coming from Ableton Live 8 to Reaper and I am new to this DAW. So far I love it. Thanks for a great tutorial.
Hey, thanks very much, I'm a guitarist wanting to get started on recording, but I didn't know where to start on the drums. this was very helpful and easy to understand.
An alternative to using the arrow key to scroll to the note you want on the virtual keyboard, is to right click on a particular note. Right-clicking on a note will centre the note on the virtual keyboard, and may bring other, desired notes within easier reach.
Ohhh! I understand. I downloaded a different drum kit and will have to figure out how to use it! I am a beginner with this program and this type of thing in general. Thanks!
+Charlotte Rose just created a new tutorial where I show you how to use the FREE MT Power Drum Kit. Watch that then watch this again. ruclips.net/video/JZe-CKu2G-o/видео.html
Great tutorial! Tis is the clearest and most useful reaper video i've seen so far. You covered a lot more than just drums. Just migrated to reaper from the built in DAW on my Korg. Now if I could get sorted on replication/repeats I'd be sorted.
This was a great tutorial and I like your approach very much thank you. Suggestion: Once you've created your drum line and you're still in the MIDI take window use EDIT->Humanize (keyboard shortcut: H), choose the select all notes option, and set timing and velocity to a value of about five percent or less to give your drums some variation otherwise every beat will be perfectly timed and the exact same volume. Humanize won't make them sound HUMAN, but it will make them sound more organic. Request: Show how to substitute our own drum samples into the MT Power Drummer plugin?
Thanks this worked great for programing drums, but when I recorded my guitar over the drums everything was out of time upon playback. Do you have a video about solving this problem?
OH MAN THANK YOU I was getting a little stressed about drums in Reaper (new) I couldn't find Cakewalk TTS TTI in Instruments though so I downloaded MT DRUM PRO followed the same steps and Houston we have sound🎶 I sure wish I had the CakewalkTTS TTI (cockos) it just isn't there Cheers🍻
Hi, just to clarify, when I made this original video I (foolishly) did not realise the reason I had the TTS instrument was because I had installed a version of a Cakewalk DAW. So you are correct, Reaper does not come with the TTS. When I realised my error, I made an updated video with a different drum kit. Glad, however, that you found the body of the video useful in terms of creating your drum tracks. Here is a link to my updated drum video ... ruclips.net/video/JZe-CKu2G-o/видео.html&
I have just recently purchased reaper & found this video which was exactly what I was looking for. Unfortunately the instrument Cakewalk TTS-1 does not appear in my list of instruments?
I'm currently using a trial version of Reaper and it doesn't appear to have the TTS-1 plugin that supposedly comes with it....I want to purchase Reaper but not unless I can have access to this. Can anyone point me to where I might download this plugin?
Ah, must have Cakewalk TTS-1 because I have a couple of Cakewalk DAWs installed too. My bad. You can get round this if you don't have a Virtual GM instrument by enabling the MS Wavetable Synth in the MIDI settings, and then routing the hardware output of the track to that Synth.
Your videos are always great! I'm a non-drummer, have been playing with Reaper for a while, got a midi controller, and wanted to learn the most basic of basics with regards to making drum beats. This looks like what I'm looking for. I'll use this as well as the updated video you made for using MT Power Drum Kit. One question for you, not urgent, just if you happen to know off the top of your head: Have you played around with the kit you used for THIS video recently? If so, would be interested to know your thoughts with how the current version compares to the versions (reaper and cakewalk) you used when making this original video. Thanks again for your great content!
Everything is fine until I try to hear it in playback. I can hear the drums when setting up and when recording. In play back, the VUs are active, but no matter what output settings I choose, I cannot hear the MIDI, (but I can hear wav, aif, and mp3).
Hi, I realised after making this video I had that drum kit because I had Cakewalk installed too. So see this video for an alternative ruclips.net/video/JZe-CKu2G-o/видео.html
Thank you for the wonderful tutorial. I did this a couple of weeks and it worked well. Today when I'm trying to lay down some drum beats, I get drum sounds on the virtual keyboard but only piano sounds on my connected midi keyboard. I'm set on channel 10. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Great video, Thank you Jane! Can you please point the way on how to use the MT-PowerDrumKit with the Reaper FX titled, "JS: MIDI Sequencer Megababy"? Thank you for your time.

+The7nUp Hey, thanks for the lovely compliments, glad you liked it!
Simply fantastic tutorial! Exactly the stuff you need to avoid hours of headaches just to get going as a beginner!

Agree 100%

Man I've been poking around on this since I got EZ Drummer and hadn't figured out how to do exactly what you just showed me. THANK YOU.
Glad to have helped 👍
A very great step-by-step demonstration of how to program a MIDI track.
Max Dierre Thanks for your comment! Glad you liked it

This tutorial makes it so easy a drummer could follow it 😁
😂🥁
oh God, found this years late but equally interesting and useful !!!! Thanks!!!
thanks!
Love the straight-to-the point instruction style! Cakewalk is no longer built into Reaper, though, so I didn't get very far.
This is how a RUclips video should be done! Great job and thank you for sharing.
I can't stress enough how useful this video was for me! Thank you!
Thank you!
How can someone in the world click on dislike for this video?
Thank you very much, you helped a lot!
Regards from Brazil.
I'm just starting on Reaper and this in incredibly helpful and beautifully done! Thank you!

Nice, good luck with that :)
Just getting into recording my midi drums and Piano on Reaper so this was good to watch. Subscribed!

Thanks again! Super video I´ve created my first drum midi track

One of the best tutorials 👌

you teached me exactly what i needed, thank you thank you thank you
Very helpful video, just got Reaper. Thank you very much!
I little busy but this year I want to take time out to connect with you to learn
If I could donate $50 to you, I certainly would. I have been trying for ages to find out how to midi edit in Reaper! Thank you thank you thank you.
Really helpful. Thank you so much for sharing..Love
I hope this comes in handy to make my first rock demo.
Good luck 👍
This was a great tutorial and I like your approach very much thank you.

Thanks for your comment, that is a very helpful suggestion .... I’ll add your idea to my (quite long!) list of videos to do.
You made my day! what a great tutorial, I am well on my way.
I am so late to the game. Thank you from the US.
Thanks this worked great for programing drums, but when I recorded my guitar over the drums everything was out of time upon playback. Do you have a video about solving this problem?

If you downloaded the free version of Reaper, it does not have Cakewalk tts. :D

When I go in to virtual instruments I can’t see the drums that you selected on my menu.

Muito boa as suas aulas, a cada uma aprendo um termo de uso diferente, parabéns !

What on earth did that mean??!! hahaha I am a noob but . . .
I like to keep the notes, sometimes, a little bit shifted. This makes the track more natural.
6:04 can't believe Q anon has a hand in Reaper DAW. Trust the plan. I got it. Q is the reaper to the cabahl. It all makes sense now.
Thanks. Really helpful and clear.
This tutorial is really helpful! Thank you very much! :D I really appreciate it!
thank you great video ! but i'm missing many instruments.. i do not see TTS drum , nor FREE MT POWER why is that, how can i add them?
i learned a lot from your vids. thanks!

I get massive latency from my keyboard, I have tried adjusting the Input Offset, but no change. Any ideas?
Exactly what i was looking for - thank you
the webpage is not working :( does anyone have the drum map file?
Everything is fine until I try to hear it in playback. I can hear the drums when setting up and when recording. In play back, the VUs are active, but no matter what output settings I choose, I cannot hear the MIDI, (but I can hear wav, aif, and mp3).
awesome..could you please tell me how to convert drum sheet music
Thank you for this video. This is great.
60 day trial does not have Cakewalk TTS-1, just so you know... :(
Hi, I realised after making this video I had that drum kit because I had Cakewalk installed too. So see this video for an alternative ruclips.net/video/JZe-CKu2G-o/видео.html
my version does not have that cakewalk thing
Thank you so much!
Totally brilliant and certainly inspirational
when I go to quantise the last 2 beats go off beat and don't line up, anyone have any suggestions why this would be?
Great teacher 🙌
For some reason i don't have the Cakewalk option or anything else with DXj at the start. Is there something I need to download?
Thank you very much.. very helpful video..
Got me started. thank you.
Good to hear 👍

Oi ! Seu video aula falando sobre o Reaper é muito bom .
gostei muito .
Obrigado pelo seu comentário
Oh reaper... What you want: "Quantize selected notes", What Reaper does: "Fuck up the position of several non-selected notes."
haha
FernestHall I think it has to do with grid view setting-- 1/8, 1/16, what have you
This is really excellent. Thanks!
Wow, thanks for letting me know :)
Thank you
Wow this was fantastic, thanks for uploading! Insta-subbed
