This is most completed rebuild video I have found for a 700R4. Thank you for taking the time to explain and show all the details. I feel more confident about rebuilding my 700R4 with my son.
Very comprehensive and thorough. You even state the parts by name. I cant believe this very informative video is free. Pro tech and instructor. Thank you boss man.
Great video. I have been a professional mechanic for 45 years but have always let transmission shops handle the automatics. I've can do anything with engines, manual trans, t-cases, differentials. Now thanks to you I know I can do this myself. You are awesome.
Im rebuilding my first 700r4 and this video is amazing normally i dont comment on videos but you pretty much sum up everything thing needed for disassembly which is amazing. Thank you
Exceptional video sir!!! Thank you for taking your time to make this video. I'm from Houston and I can feel your pain about the heat. You've definitely mastered your craft
Hiram, This is another great video from beginning to end. I are doing a great service to all your viewers showing them tips, tricks things to look for. No one except a few look at the captured check valves, not just the loose ones found in the valve body in the “Bath Tubes” where the lives. Wether a guy has a number of tools or all, the option to use what you have comes out. Nice, clear, easy to hear. Just a great just as they can rewind and watch over as needed. I always love finding bad stuff and mistakes made by the last guy. The 87 era was the last year that the VB was drilled for converter clutch hydraulic control but simply has plugs. Adding a 40 tooth tone rings on out the output shaft and use a 92 and up sensor to get a VSS to and electronic instrument cluster. Just a great job of explaining. Thanks!
Great review and explanation of part ID and reasons for disassembly procedure. I might be biased on this video since I have an 89 GMC V1500 Suburban with this same transmission. All original transmission 136,000 miles, 4th fluid and filter change except years back my local transmission shop suggested to put in a Corvette servo and they adjusted the TV cable, that was in 1992. Has a really good firm1 to 2 upshift but 2 to 3 is getting less firm under full throttle. Thanks Hiram.
Thanks for explaining each part and what to look for. Even if I do not do this myself at least now I have an idea of what is involved and what tools I would need. Looks like I have everything except that spring compressor. Cheers.
great video, really enjoyed it. can't thank you enough for all the information in your explanations... expert level stuff. the fan noise doesn't bother me, maybe place a small one under the bench or a big slow moving one that doesn't hurt your audio quality 🤷🏻♂️. take care of yourself 👍. keep em coming.
Just like the last guy said you make great videos you really pay attention to detail. Those gm tranny's always make me a little nervous because they seem to have more parts. I like rebuilding the non electronic for fun they seem to be easier.
As i've said before, USE THE FAN!! i've lived in Texas and 110F is way to hot to not use a fan. Also it's not the fan making the noise, it's the ballast in the lights and it's not a problem. I've been subscribed for a long time and your doing fine so thank you for the video.
Nice work. Thank you for doing this. At 41:50 you talk about interchanges between 4L60 and 60e front to back lube seals. Fig 100 page 62 of the ATSG manual states they are not interchangeable and the proper seal is determine by matching the output shaft to the figure. I am doing an autopsy on my otherwise perfect 700R4 and it turns out the rear planetary failed likely due to the previous builder using a mismatched seal.
man... this is best video about 700r4 trans keep the good work you are the best... You explain everything in detail appreciate the time you take to produce these video thanks!!!
Hi, Great channel! I have an '87 2wd Silverado with a 700R4. My shift selection bracket was falling off and i accidentally popped in into reverse while it was still moving forward (about 5mph) now I have no forward gears but it shifted perfectly before that happened. Any thoughts on what could have happened before I get into a rebuild? Thank you in advance! -Hank
Awesome video!!! Hey can just the pump/drum be removed without removing the pan, valve body, accumulators, and all that on bottom? It's a newly rebuilt trans that the TV cable was initially set up wrong, it was only driven about 5 miles but now the cable was adjusted correct and it still won't go into 3rd and has black clutch material in the pan. So I'm thinking the TV cable error messed up 3rd and wondering if I can just pull the drum and repair the 3rd/4th clutches and friction material without breaking down the entire trans. 1st, 2nd and reverse all feel perfect, it just slips going into 3rd.
Thank you for this comprehensive tutorial. Awesome job. Sure wish I knew the brand and model number of those C ring pliers. Ive fought that final ring for an hour.
Hey my name is Doug. Really liked your video 700r4. I have a 700r4 I’m going to rebuild. I’ve never rebuilt a transmission but I believe I can. It’s going in a4x4 everything is stock, regular sized tires. But I pull a trailer from time to time. What do I need just to make the transmission stronger? 1986 k20 5.7 4 bolt stock. And thanks again for the video
Great job man. Every educational video needs to be detailed like this. On RUclips. My only hopes was. That you would have listed all of those parts that are considered " extra " when ordering a rebuild kit. I mean the stuff that doesn't come with a rebuild kit. Or maybe you could list a place where we can order one from confidently knowing we got EVERYTHING. I'd rather just do all the bearings a d everything while it's open anyway! I still Give this an 11 of out 10. Sir. Thank you very much.
i have a 700r4 out of a 85 gmc 4x4 can this video help with that or is the 4x4 diffrent? BTW thank you very much im not the smartest tool in the shed and you made this very easy to follow.
Hiram no longer seems to be active, so FYI for anyone interested: Possibly Sonnax Servo Release Check Valve Kit, Part No. 77701-076, 2nd Gear Servo Release? Sonnax states "Warning: Must be used with properly functioning OE capsule." I decided to replace the OEM capsule check ball: GM Genuine Parts 8634400 Automatic Transmission Clutch Accumulator Check Valve, and add the Sonnax part number, while I had everything apart. Happy building to all.
Great videos you explain everything and keep it to the point. I have a question that I hope you can help with 92 - 700-r4 I went to install a shift kit along with new accumulator pistons, corvette servo and .500 boost valve in the pump long story short the new boost valve is somehow stuck inside its bore like maybe it's wedged I don't know tbh . Any ideas for getting it back out and can those bores be honed or is it best to replace the pump
Around 1:02:10 related to the 3rd accumulator capsule / check ball, you mention the option to reuse the capsule with check ball by using a Sonnax part that goes on top of that. What Sonnax part number are you referring to? My OEM capsule and check ball is not leaking and I don't like to break something that is working (e.g., a OEM replacement might leak out of the box), but I want to ensure no leakage with the Sonnax backup solution that goes on top of the existing capsule. I can't find the Sonnax part that would fit in the small space above the existing capsule,
I had a fleet of '84, '85 & '86 1/2 ton Chevrolets that we ran nationwide. Could not keep 700R4 transmissions in them. I talked to the local PD and they had same problem with their patrol cars. I even installed a high performance towing 700R4 in one and it did not last. Those things sure left a bad taste in my mouth.
Mine has a flexable “tab” that is connected by one of the 13mm valve body bolts about an 1”1/2 long, what is it there for? ( Near rear yellow electrical plug )
Hello, can you give the reference of the last snap ring plier you are using to remove the snap ring @ 1:03:55? I just can't remove it and I can't find any snap ring plier which fit in Switzerland. Thank you.
Wanting to rebuild mine myself where can I buy a good complete kit with the good parts, also are all the output shafts the same ? I have 4x4 making it a 2wd
I have an 83 700r4 behind a 6.2 diesel. Would I benefit at all switching to a 13 rotor pump? Also is there anything different besides the governor and the convertor on a diesel transmission?
Hiram!! Watching this video has me rebuilding my 87 700r4 I have a question and hopefully you’ll see it My separator plate is damaged from the accumulator from a broken spring I’ve found a repair plate that says it’s for that do you have any advice or info on the install as info is sparse hope to hear your input
Hi how are you ! Have a quick question about a 700r4 transmission in my 82 c10 i was working on my truck so i put the front of the truck on ramps and when the front was on the ramp the transmission starts to leaking oil from the rear en where the drive shaft is connected to the transmission is that normal or maybe a seall is bad????????
How difficult and expensive is it to turn an early 700r4 into a good one during rebuild.I don’t remember the # but supposedly you should get one after that #?
at 12:50 You mentioned building up pressure. When my truck is cold and i step on the throttle i feel a 'dead' spot before it really engages into 1st gear. Could this be because the tranny is cold and hasn't correct pressure yet? Because after that is engaging just fine.
I’ve got a 700r4 in a 86 blazer it’s been rebuilt by a transmission shop but it lost reverse all forward gears work what would be the most common thing that would cause that to happen ?
When reinstalling a new sleeve how far does it have to go on does it go right up against the Speedo gear? Or do you have to leave it off for inch or so?
You sir, are an expert at your trade. I would love to ship my transmission to you to build. Is there any performance upgrades or kits for the Nissan Titan RE5RO5A?
Both Superior and Transgo have valve body kits for it. The TCM is part of the valve body. Titan has a problem with TCM that throws a false solenoid code and goes into fail Safe mode. TCM needs to be replaced if that's the issue.
Hi my manual shifter shaft that connects to the shifter lever inside my th700r4 tranny pops in and out ever so slightly so I can't get the shifter ( b&m sport shifter) to work properly. People mentioned that there is a 15mm crown nut inside the transmission that holds the manual shifter shaft in... Do you think that it's loose or broken and could be the issue? If I drop the pan, would you know if I have to remove other parts to tighten the crown nut to the manual shifter shaft? Would you, or anyone know the torque for the nut? Thanks for your time and help.
I have been trying to figure out where this piece go in the transmission. It was in the oil pan and the transmission reverse don't work. Can you help me out ?
Why does my 700 shift fast and hold a higher gear causing it to pull when stopping thus causing it to die ( when it’s cold ) but when it’s warm it shift perfect and down shifts perfect I changed the guild and filter with no improvement

This is possibly the best instructional automotive video I have ever seen on youtube! Great self camera work and complete explanations! Perfect!
Im rebuilding my first 700r4 and this video is amazing normally i dont comment on videos but you pretty much sum up everything thing needed for disassembly which is amazing. Thank you
This is by far the best video on transmissions an what goes In to rebuilding one I have ever seen
I really appreciate the time you take to produce these videos. 👍
Thanks!
Hey man thanks for sweating to an oldie I really appreciate your hard work and wisdom.
Can't tell if it's Me (Getting better. or Just Your Patience & Illustration) This was A Magnificent Presentation.
Thank you. Because of you I saved money and decided not to replace the sun shell. This will be my first 700r4 build.
Exceptional video sir!!! Thank you for taking your time to make this video. I'm from Houston and I can feel your pain about the heat. You've definitely mastered your craft
You make such good videos. You explain everything in detail. AWESOME!
This is definitely going to come in handy when i rebuild my 89 Trans Am's transmission! Thank you!!

This has been the best video of a 700r4 transmission rebuild I have ever seen well done👍
You showed high expertise, such that, hard uninstall operation looks like an easy one !!! Thanks for the effort ...
Thanks Hiram, your videos are so good! I am doing a rebuild on my 700, just waiting for parts...and for part 2! :D
It's out, check it out.
Definitely knows his stuff. He makes it look like washing dishes!!
Amazingly detailed. You are an asset to all DIYers.
Dude - this is Excellent !!
Thank you very much for taking the time to post this with such detail !
Thanks you you are a true inspiration

Hey Great Video. I am going to attempt to build my 85 K10 700r4.
Hiram no longer seems to be active, so FYI for anyone interested: Possibly Sonnax Servo Release Check Valve Kit, Part No. 77701-076, 2nd Gear Servo Release? THIS IS THE VIDEO THAT I WAS LOOKING FOR!!, AWESOME JOB MAN!... U HAVE A NEW SUBSCRIBER!
Have you ever seen a 700r4 with auxiliary vb lock up in Reverse and Neutral? But fine in forward gears.

Thank you for a great video .I appreciate you giving the identity of each part an what they do ..also what can causes the trans trouble

..Glad You're Back..🏆🔧
How do you feel about a 700r4 on a 454 build just for fun cruising? No towing and now racing. It would be on an 1989 suburban.
Is this a reliable transmission and good for towing a boat? Was thinking of swapping from the th350
I'm waiting for part 2. thanks for part 1.
Mine has a flexable “tab” that is connected by one of the 13mm valve body bolts about an 1”1/2 long, what is it there for? ( Near rear yellow electrical plug )
in your opinion what would be the cause of my 700r4 having reverse and park but no other gears

The one in the truck has no reverse. I bought the truck that way. Forward gears are all strong
Hiram!! Watching this video has me rebuilding my 87 700r4 I have a question and hopefully you’ll see it
My separator plate is damaged from the accumulator from a broken spring I’ve found a repair plate that says it’s for that do you have any advice or info on the install as info is sparse hope to hear your input
The overhaul kit comes with gasket for that plate.
Also, part 2 came out last Saturday.

Understand, I'm a mechanic is Texas. You are a Saint for turning off your fan.
Hello what is the name of your shop? Thanks Randy
Buen maestro gracias por los videos
In other words, on the governor, governor pressure has to over-ride line pressure in order for it to shift.
hi there I am Billy I have a 1989 chevy silverado k1500 4x4 what seal goes in the back of the transmission?
Can you do a complete tear down and rebuild an 11-14 f150 6r80 plz. I would really appreciate it
Could they they build a transmission with only two parts so we don't have to go through this headache? thank you😊
Can you remove the parking pawl without taking the transmission out of the truck?
Hello. Disculpe tengo un bmw 2008 528i que me gustaría saber que presión debe tener la transmission para cambiar los cambios gracias
Do you know any good rebuilders in the Florida southwest region?
Blocking off the capsule inside the servo what do you gain from plugging it
where can I find a guy in the Chicago area that does your qualty of work on transmissions???

My 700r4 will shift out of 2nd but not into 3rd. Is there anything in the valve body that would cause this?
I worked for Chevrolet for 60 years repairing transmissions. Still get amused at folks that don't even kinow what a 700R4 is...............
I have been trying to figure out where this piece go in the transmission. It was in the oil pan and the transmission reverse don't work.
Can you help me out ?
goo vid man
Thank you very much
Hi mate,
Great video
When is part 2 coming
Thanks from Australia!!
This Saturday, it's going to be a long video.
great vid, thanks! feels bad to see u work without a fan though- too kind of u to do it just for the sake of our audio.
do you do the duel clutch ford 2012 they are a pain
I would like to know are you still rebuilding transmission
You are a badass nice vid
Where in Texas is this shop located ?
So many people think you don't need the tv cable it makes buying a used transmission difficult
If it's not plugged into the throttle the transmission will fail very quickly.
No TV pressure = low line pressure.
How much do you charge to rebuild a 700r4 out of a 1990 G20 van
Heard you mention Houston, is there a way to contact you about getting a 700r4 rebuilt?
Instead of the 700r4. What should you put in the vehicle, if 700 doesn't last.
If you're capable of electronics a 4L80E is great.
700R4 is about right for hydraulic control without PCM.
Why does my 700 shift fast and hold a higher gear causing it to pull when stopping thus causing it to die ( when it’s cold ) but when it’s warm it shift perfect and down shifts perfect
I changed the guild and filter with no improvement
