Your right but research does point out the Iowa class battleships in east terminology Stormy weather: Iowa wins because of its more equipped radar and longer range. Clear weather: a draw due to Iowa’s speed and maneuverability Iowa’s guns are more powerful because of there muzzle velocity and slightly smaller caliber as it’s not up to size it’s decided by physics so yes a lot of research points out to Iowa but Yamato is a beast of a ship
well if they blunder into each other at super close range like in this video, Yamato will crush any other battleship. The question between Yamato and Iowa was always who would win in the kind of long range gun duel that Iowa was built to fight. In that sort of fight, though both ships could throw their shells well over 40,000 yards (over 23 miles), Iowa's fire control allowed accurate fire at extreme range and Iowa's radar could track Yamato and feed exact positions to it's superb fire control system at ranges where the Yamato would only know where Iowa is if she has a seaplane scout observing and talking on the radio. Basically at very long range Iowa would be expected to land lots of hits for every hit Yamato lands, so the question is does the better fire control win out or does the crazy thick armor win out.
Yeah, advances in air power, submarines, and missiles are what made battleships obsolete. There's a reason why you see nations build bigger and bigger aircraft carriers, and better support ships, while battleships have disappeared. However, if railgun technology continues to advance, and anti missile systems get better, perhaps we may see submersible battleships. Rather than launch torpedoes, they simply surface, unleash a hyper-accurate and unstoppable salvo of death, and then dive again.
The 16" guns on an Iowa class battleship were rated after the war as being equal to or slightly superior to the Yamato's 18" guns, because of longer range and superior accuracy due to better radar controlled range-finding. That said, the close proximity of the ships (toe to toe for battleships) meant that advantage was taken away. At that point its just armor. While Iowa class ships are tough, Yamato had nearly twice the armor, so could hang is a brawl a lot better. I do have to say that a fight like this would have never happened. Both sides would have known the other's position long before the first shot was fired. and if Yamato was that close to a capitol ship, I would bet that a lot of dive bombers would have showed up as well.
As true as this is the Iowa’s guns (iowa class in general) we’re actually stronger due to higher muzzle velocity which is a factor in long range but this would also mean it would be able to penetrate armor a lot easier and explode inside the ship. Your comment is amazing it’s true but this is my reply
@@zenistu5789 Don't forget Fire Control. Iowa could see and target over the horizon as well as maneuver and shoot simultaneously at a speed almost 10 knots higher than Yamato. Japanese did not have the ability to shoot/maneuver. If they were shooting, they had to go dead straight. If maneuvering they could not shoot.
It has been said that the Bismarck with 14 inch guns, had the most accurate guns of all the WW2 battleships. Not the most destructive, but the most accurate. Because, the ship had an advanced gyroscope, that other enemy battleships of larger size did not have at the beginning of the war. American Battleships that were produced earlier before Pearl Harbor had 16 inch guns. The projectiles weighed 2000 pounds, and could shoot a distance of 20 miles. And they could shoot constantly. One blast after another. In the past, I was able to go aboard the USS New Jersey. What a sight to see those two big gun turrets. Located up front. And one in the rear.. 9 big ass guns total.
Lol. You guys are all wrong. Yamato had better range and thicker armor. Iowa’s range fell a couple miles short, but had far superior fire control. Also. The size and shape of the Yamato’s shell made it less likely to penetrate at range if it did hit. Not due to muzzle velocity. Due to shell design.
@@zenistu5789 That's not the case. The 16" .50 cal. fired a shell with slightly better penetrative ability outside 20,000 yards, but the 18.1" shell had a much larger bursting charge. The Yamatos carried much more armor than the Iowas and had an immunity zone twice that of the U.S. ship.
The Yamato in this video was unrealisticly slow to fire and inaccurate. It was, in these conditions, just as accurate as Iowa. Also Yamato used way larger guns so yeah, that also counts.
I have a wargame call Atlantic Fleet and I played with the Bismarck and Scharnhorst vs North Carolina, 1:1 and both german battleships sink the US Battleship
In my opinion, in such large-scale battles it is very interesting to observe the individual participation of some participants, because they can best convey seriousness and fun at the same time.
Only reason this happened was the Yamato Somehow snuck in close. Iowa Class was specifically designed for long distance combat, having Super heavy 16inch shells designed to dive at a steep trajectory, Radar assisted gunlaying and unbelievably enough; a ballistic fire control computer (one of the first of its kind) even in the '40s.
I think even in close range Iowa could still win. Its superb fire control allows it to track and fire at enemy ships while doing extreme evasive maneuvers to dodge enemy shells
+@@joshuaraewa-ay9684+ Iowa Class had the same belt thickness and coverage % as the South Dakota's but was inclined at 30° to give it sloped armor effect at a distance. Like I said; built for distance fighting, plus had an astonishing flank speed of 34-36 knots in good weather.
@@joshuaraewa-ay9684 The weakest would be North Carolina, since its armor was designed to withstand a 14 inch shell. South Dakota and Iowa were both designed to withstand 16 inch shells, but Iowa had a newer and more advanced armor design, plus Iowa had more armor overall due to being a longer ship Iowa>S. Dakota>N. Carolina
My freind and I recently took a tour on the USS Massachusetts. The level of detail here is astonishing. Right down to the 5 inch guns sounding louder than the 16 inchers from inside the gun turret. Edit: that axe at 3:02 is a US navy secret. How did you get that knowledge?!?
USN Iowa would never have a chance alone vs. IJN Yamato in a straight up fight. After the Colorado Class Battleships, the US adopted speed and accuracy over power and armor, where the Japanese focused on sheer firepower, making the Yamato and Musashi both the ONLY battleships in naval history to have 18 inch/460mm main battery turrets. In reality, if the Iowa ever came up against the Yamato or Musashi, it's best chance at survival would be to turn and run.
True, their capability is on accuracy, speed, and fire control. But Yamato is having thicker armour , and greater guns. Just like a MMA fighter against a sumo wrestler on A fight match.
If the Iowa knew where Yamato was (ex: yamato doesn't sneak up on it) then sinking the Yamato would be a cake walk for an Iowa. They can shoot exceptionally far with exceptional accuracy and are much faster. All the Iowa has to do is keep its distance and run circles around the Yamato and use its radar.
@@frogshapedplane Yamato is lacking on good crew, once its got a good crew , and better fire control, there Will be two condition. It depends on range really along as yamato is in range for effective combat iowa with its lesser guns and weaker armor would be torn apart though yes not without damaging yamato greatly.
Personally I would give the edge to the Iowa. Her 6 knot speed advantage lets her set the terms of the battle. Her far superior fire control radar gives her the edge in long range combat. Last her 16in guns were nearly the equal to the 18in guns of the Yamato. When you add it all up Iowa baring a lucky shot has the advantage. Iowa could bracket a ship at 33,000 yards and did so in WWII.
@@yashsingh3126 the Yamato can destroy every battleship of her time in a 15 km or closer, becouse in ww2 she didn't have radar, making very difficult to hit a projectile, at least, in this range, she can hit. @@loganlilland3249 of course not, but we don't know about the crew of Yamato in a ship vs ship, but the adventage of the Iowa is the tecnology that she had. Nice video. Yamato had higher caliber guns and more armour whereas IOWA had more advanced shells, higher speed and better sensors. In your scenario, Yamato ambushes and engages IOWA in close range. Had the two ships engaged in a similar situation, I would also favor the Yamato. Iowa's best chance to win against the Yamato in an 1-1, would be to detect and engage from long range in blue water sea. Using the superior radar, target system and superior speed, she would cause more damage to the Yamato than receive.
Yamato's main armour was deficient in design - they couldn't make it in one piece and ended up just riveting 2 thinner sheets together. Analysis of the hull wreckage showed the rivets broke under stress during combat. Factor that into your simulation ...

Daniel fmatosrivera To be honest, if this battle somehow happened in real life (unlikely as both ships were obsolete upon launch and should never have existed to start with), it would end badly for everyone. Whoever wins is going to be badly damaged and easy prey for the enemy.
Starkiller's cat In clear conditions radar-guided firing is far less of an advantage, so Iowa would have worse odds, but she’s still faster and still does have good enough firepower to win, albeit taking major damage herself.
@@bkjeong4302 not by much, either in firing speed or movement. They are similarly accurate, and Yamato has way larger guns. It's either who shoots first or battle conditions
Starkiller's cat I meant the speed of the ship, NOT firing speed. 6 knots (27 knots vs. 33 knots) IS a notable advantage; at the very least it enables the faster ship to run away if the fight isn’t in its favour.
This is exactly how it would have ended. The Iowa class were actually build more as battlecruisers, that is there were to keep up with the carrier fleet and defend it from aircraft and surface targets. The Montana vs Yamato would be interesting.
A much luckier Yamato for basically stumbling upon an Iowa at ranges that would be considered "close range" for an Atlantic duel 20 years earlier in WW2 when the Iowa's radar would normally see Yamato as far as line of sight to the horizon allows, and it could "blindfire" with incredible accuracy, something that no Axis ship was able to do (that means fire on something it never actually sees with optics). In a long range gun duel, the battle could go either way, in a fight like that one where they are only like 3 to 5 miles from each other, Obviosly all the advantages go to Yamato.

That would have been one of the most violent and gruesome battleship clashes of all time. Binkov's Battlegrounds has done a video showing just how evenly matched the vessels were in areas, and their sheer power. The reason he said Iowa had a chance of victory is partially because of its speed advantage over Yamato's heavier and slower hull.
Imagine if there was a naval battle, Involving the following: Bismarck Class (Bismarck, Tirpitz) Yamato Class (Yamato, Musashi) VERSUS Iowa Class (Iowa, Missouri, New Jersey, Wisconsin)
That on long range shots, 40+ Km distance, this is a scenario where is point blank range. Usually when you're the first to shoot, you win the engagement.
Neither side would, the 16" guns on the Iowa actually had superior range to that of the 18" guns on the Yamato. They would have taken full advantage of that.
Bad. The Yamato was a failed construct, it probably would have been sunk by the Iowa. Big guns are good, but if you almost always miss the target, you’ll be sunk.
Fun fact: it's already been proven at that range which looks like less than 10 km's the USS Iowa would of won hands down due to reload capability and agility.
@@ahrontanalas4152 And where is your facts? Unlike you Report Him LLC has provided evidence, so give us something a little better than “uh no” if you want anyone to take you seriously.
@@g-manalt2709 A: He just said the points without actually proving them with a source, so both provided no evidence. B: His points are not the best as 1) First of all, she had the better guns, as they were 2.1 inches bigger, and they both had a reload time of 30 seconds according to sources like Wikipedia, and 5 great features of the Yamato class. While it could be slower, a difference in reload time of a few seconds is not going to make much of a difference. I've heard people say Iowa's guns are better because of a higher mussel velocity, but that doesn't make sense, as Wikipedia states Yamato's muzzle velocity as 2,600 fts, 100 fts more than Iowa's 2,500 fts muzzle velocity, and the people who support the claim has said it would only work from a range of 30,000 yards or higher, well beyond any reasonable battle range. So, with an equal, if slightly inferior(but only slightly, and not enough to make a difference) rate of fire, and batter guns, Report Him's LLC's first point is disproved. 2) For his second point, well, it does stand. Iowa had a higher speed of 33 knots, compared to Yamato's top speed of 27.4 knots. However, Yamato is still very maneuverable, as she displayed several extremely impressive evasive maneuvers during the opening stages of Operation Ten Go, according to Drachinifel (a very impressive youtuber who I recommend).
Iowa and Missouri sink, Yamato will go heavy damage, but he was created for this... I can talk this using the history, Bismarck was sinked by more than 40 royal navy ships, (Royal Navy was the most powerfull) BUT, was he tripulation that realy sink he, they had used bombs on the bismarck hull. Same with all the RN main guns shooting at him he dont sunk beacause hes hull was created for that. Bismarck are a Iowa more "light", now, imagine the same thing with the most powerfull battleship vs 2 South Dakotas Upgradeds... What turned the Iowa class famous waa beacuse they was the faster BBs, yes, they have good A.A guns, main guns, etc, but they always will go be a upgrade of the Dakotas.
This video is very accurate and this would be what would happen to the Iowa if Yamato actually met with Iowa I agree with everything that happens in this video
I’m calling bs on that 1. The Yamato’s turrets aren’t that fast as the US had hydraulic. 2. The radar on the US would have deleted the ship years before. And 3. The guns on the Iowa were better as the rounds were more accurate and the guns could balance themselves if the ship rocked
Incredible video! I loved watching these twilights of battleships going to all out war! I do have one critique: I think Yamato could win, but it wouldn't be easy. Iowa has better technology then Yamato including her advanced Fire Control systems and her amazing radar. Most likely, it would be the Iowa that scored the first hit. She is also more maneuverable. However, if Yamato was to get lucky and score a shot right on the Fire Control tower, she would be able to knock Iowa out of the battle momentarily and score a series of devastating hits with her 18.0 inch guns. It's really a matter of who shoots first. It's just that the battle would not end quickly. Iowa has more ability then was what represented here. Excellent work all the same and I can't wait to see the other battles you have.

However, if railgun technology continues to advance, and anti missile systems get better, perhaps we may see submersible battleships. Rather than launch torpedoes, they simply surface, unleash a hyper-accurate and unstoppable salvo of death, and then dive again.
@@zenistu5789 plus the penetrating power of the 16in ap round was superior to that of the 18s on the Yamato and musashi.
The Yamatos carried much more armor than the Iowas and had an immunity zone twice that of the U.S. ship.

Its superb fire control allows it to track and fire at enemy ships while doing extreme evasive maneuvers to dodge enemy shells

clear win by Yamato for sure

Must've been a very lucky hit for Iowa to destroy a main gun turret on Yamato.

I thought they had the same rate of fire, Two shells per minute.
@@g-manalt2709 A: He just said the points without actually proving them with a source, so both provided no evidence.
B: His points are not the best as
1) First of all, she had the better guns, as they were 2.1 inches bigger, and they both had a reload time of 30 seconds according to sources like Wikipedia, and 5 great features of the Yamato class.

I do have one critique:
I think Yamato could win, but it wouldn't be easy.

On the night of November 14, 1942, during the next raid to Guadalcanal, Kirishima, the former flagship of the Japanese connection (covering forces of the convoy that delivered large Japanese land formations to the landing site), engaged in an artillery duel with the American battleship "South Dakota" (South Dakota), caused damage to it (hit by 1 shell, penetrated both sides of the hatch coaming and detonated on impact with the barbet. Hole in the upper deck 0.914×3.048 m. The casings of the central and right 16-inch guns of the GC No. 3 turret were damaged. Water and gas reflective barriers 30 feet around the barbet were destroyed. The main armored deck reflected all the fragments. The right catapult and several 20-mm submachine guns were damaged), but the ship itself was heavily damaged by battleship fire "Washington" (Washington), which came undetected at a close distance (3 miles). Kirishima was hit by 9,406-mm and about 40,127-mm shells, the ship lost control, two main-caliber turrets were destroyed, and severe fires started. On the morning of November 15, 1942, the commander ordered to abandon the ship, which sank 5 miles from the islandSavo. 209 people were killed. 1,025 sailors and 61 officers were rescued.[4] A Japanese convoy bound for Guadalcanal was routed the next day by successive attacks by American aircraft. "South Dakota" after this fight was out of action for 14 months, "Washington" - for 1.5 months.
Would be interesting bismarck vs hms prince of wales
The term bought the farm came directly from world war II.soldiers could sign up for a life insurance policy that would pay $10,000 in the event of their death. During world war II $10,000 was a hell of a lot of money and would have been enough to purchase a decent size farm!

I know this whole video is a "what if" kinda thing and it's made for pure entertainment, but there's one thing I'd like to point out. In reality, Yamato's main batteries would never get destroyed from a direct hit of Iowa's 41cm shells because it was made to withstand a direct hit from the shells shot from the same caliber as Yamato, which is 46cm, and the turrets were protected by an insanely thick 650cm armor.
0:47 sir where are your orders?
That’s definitely me
The Iowa fired her guns in center, right, left order.
This is how world of warships has to be
I just love the TARDIS affect in the main turrets of both ships.
