I'd say probably the worst possible kind of card design would be one that greatly limits design space for future cards. Like a writer writing themselves into a corner because they made the villain too powerful and now cannot think of how the protagonist should overcome the challenge. What I mean by limiting design space is basically because this card exists from now until it rotates the designers have to take into account this card existing when designing new cards. It could result in card effects being rejected because when combined with X card would be too powerful, or nerfing card effects in design so they are balanced around the existence of X card. They could and have in the past nerfed cards, completely changing their effects sometimes, in order to allow them to be able to design cards without worrying about the interactions with X card.
Which is why I'd say the worst designed card ever is Deepminer Brann. Brann Bronzebeard was already completely broken in the previous standard rotation because they didn't bother balancing cards around his effect for whatever reason, and as a result they ended up nerfing many cards anyway while avoiding nerfing the actual problem in Brann. Cards like Astalor, Kael'thalas Sinstrider, and Sire Denathrius, are just examples which when used with various methods of mana cheating would allow for insane amounts of damage in a single turn. Astalor and Deepminer Brann were briefly in rotation with each other at the same time, and it turns out being able to play 1 3 mana Astalor giving 2 5 mana Astalors which each give 10 armor, that also each give 2 8 mana Astalors which then each do 28 damage assuming the player is at 10 mana. Just by including 2 cards in your deck you have 112 damage potential to enemy characters.
Now the reason I think Deepminer Brann is the worst designed card of all time is simple: Blizzard's favorite keyword by far is Battlecry. Every single expansion has had numerous battlecry effects, some of them terrible, some of them ok, some of them good, some of them great, and some of them overpowered. Deepminer Brann basically creates a situation where Blizzard won't be able to make too many good or better neutral battlecry minions without also making Warrior overpowered. This basically means that either Warrior will be overpowered because of the battlecries that are added to the neutral set, or they don't add good battlecries to the neutrals set to prevent Warrior from becoming overly dominant. Because the neutral set is there for all classes to use cards from, printing weak neutral battlecry minions or nerfing strong neutral battlecry mininons entirely because of the fact they can be used in combination with a card from a single class means the game becomes warped entirely around whether that one class can use the card way more effectively than any other class. Assuming Deepminer Brann continues to exist in his current form until he rotates, means that for the next 2 expansions the neutral pool is either going to be weaker or its going to be nerfed to balance around a single card. Alternatively they could stop printing as many battlecry type effects in favor of other effects to get around this.

For me, lack of original yogsaaron. Do I have to remind that in official HS tournament, with big money on stake, some player lost the game, because enemy yog healed opponent, cleared the board and gave opponent some minnions. Mind you that at that time most RNG cards were like "use bomber to split randomly dmg" or "deathrattle get minnions that cost 3". This was completely obnoxious back there and it made a game into

Lifecoach legit quit the game because of the randomness, and he was right, because it only got way worse after that. Hogg was definitely dogshit awful card design for tournament play, but for casual play there is a reason why people fuckin love yogg. The card requires setup, costs your whole turn 10 to play, and is fundamentally unreliable in every conceivable way. Yogg has all those huge weaknesses in exchange for the strength that he might just let you make a comeback from an unwinnable game, plus he’s super fun. Yogg is so absurdly random that he ironically tends to be somewhat consistent because you have to think through when and why you are going to play him very thoroughly before you drop the god of RNG because a misplaced yogg can just insta lose you the game. I think yogg is badly designed if one game is what matters to you, but if it’s 50 or 100 or 200+ games that matter to you, yogg is a great design.

      @KhristianBolano 2 месяца назад +23

@@jondoe377 Ah yes the "overcommitting" argument for defending a card that limits your board space to 1 for a turn. Even if you don't overcommit you can still threaten lethal but you lose if you get Reno'd on the spot. If you don't threaten lethal enough then there are other board clears and you'll lose to reno when you'll commit resources to the board again. If you put up a sticky board for board clears, you lose to Reno.
Reno is 9 Mana 5 armor + true board clear that bypasses every single board mechanic in the game + devastating tempo loss because of the board limit. And you gain an hero power that is 99% better than any other hero power that is accessible in the game right now.
It's not just about Reno Warrior as well, other Reno decks are on the rise right now. Brann is just the strongest class payoff but next expansions will also give more tools to other classes, and we all know Reno decks always get stronger the more tools they have at disposal (that's why Reno Warrior currently has all the tools it needs, since no relevant card rotated out). If Reno goes unchecked after being freaking BUFFED, the next expansion themes will be ruined because there will be either aggro fest or reno.deck

The fatigue version in particular was frustrating. The only thing you could do was hope they didn't play around disruption and had Tasmin in hand to rat. Hyper Aggro Shadow Priest wasn't even enough because they packed so many defensive tools and touch of the nathrezim healed 4 along with drain soul. Don't mean to nitpick too much but if talking purely from design perspective, what you are describing here is a balancing error and not a design flaw that was amplified to a large degree by other questionably designed cards.
Its not like the idea of having a guy that just gains you a bit of armor and then once deals X amount of damage split across all enemies is inherently toxic design. Its just if the X is too high or can be abused by Brann or such cards when it becomes a problem. Meanwhile cards like Baku or Patches you could not really salvage by tuning the balance due to having flawed design.

The worst part about Objection for me was that it covered a Secret-playing Mage's only real weakness, which was Minions. They've had more than a few Secrets that respond to a Minion being played (most iconic being Mirror Entity), sure, but it didn't outright stop you. So, playing Minions was at worst a 'sure, may as well because playing a Spell will f$(ing kill me'. But, Objection just stops the potential Minion play outright, so, you play Spells and you die, you play Minions, you also die. Yeah a bit on the toxic side.

@@Benjy52 Quite the contrary. I played a lot during that time and enjoyed standard way more than I do now. Aside from the warlock questline which was very much overtuned, all the other decks had considerable strengths and weaknesses. Even the mage questline - which is really the only deck to which the complaint of 'I can't play minions' really applied - had significant drawbacks.
The decks did not build themselves as Zeddy claims. There were plenty of options and tech choices to consider that could be better or worse in certain situations. Going to have to hard disagree, thw questlines especially in standard were just throw in the cards that progress the questline and nothing else, it felt really stale then you just get killed from hand 90% of the time due to the questline rewards@@Kaeldorn

I think one of the main things to keep in mind is design and execution are different things.
In many cases, a card's design is fine. But the execution is just disgusting.
Cards like Genn and Baku are fine in their design. It's just the benefit they gave was disgusting.
Same with cards like questlines. Questlines in of themselves are a fine card design. The problem was the rewards were so stupidly broken.
Even Caverns Below isn't a bad design. Except the execution broke it (For example, if it made your minions 5 mana 5/5's then it wouldn't have been oppressive. The problem was that you'd spam 0 or 1 cost minions that were 5/5's)
In general, there are few card designs that are inherently problematic in Hearthstone. Mostly the likes of Illucia, Tony, Time Warp/Zarimi. Cards that remove player agency don't fit in Hearthstone where interactivity is already limited because you can only act during your own turn (Besides Secrets triggering).
It's possible to argue that "For the rest of the game" effects can also fit into here (As well as hero cards that will permanently change your hero power) however, such designs aren't inherently problematic if the effect isn't that big (For example, no-one ever cared about Shadowform as a card because a Priest turning their heal 2 hero power into deal 2 was not very impactful. It only became a problem when it was Anduin giving deal 2 and refresh when you play a card alongside Raza's it costs nothing effect). Heck, back in the day powerful hero cards came at a cost, Jaraxxus set you to 15 health (And removed armour) and Majordomo sets you to 8 (And still removes armour). Nowadays you get crap like Reno Lone Ranger where you get an OP hero power at the "Cost" of wiping your opponents entire board and limiting them to 1 board space for a turn... And you gain 5 armour because why the f not?

The mage secrets were fine. Ice Block really wasn’t bad until a specific expansion where it could be abused in play with newer cards. Objection is fine to. You say no counter, but actually the counter was to have a couple low cost minions to throw out and eat it. It’s just like counter spell…. But with minions. Current expansion Mage secrets are trash. There are more frustrating cards in the game that just destroy a minion, a card in you hand, and a card in your deck that are more annoying.

I think this list is fine but I have to disagree on Glide. It feels way less bad than other hand disruption that randomly deletes your win conditions and buildarounds such a Patchwerk, Boomboss and that fucking abomination of a card Theotar which combines RNG with targetable hand disruption as a 1 out of 30 card in the deck. Losing to Theotar feels terrible because your card is gone because your opponent got lucky enough to be allowed to choose to steal it which is the perfect combination of tilt compared to Glide and Stelina where you can hope to redraw or Mutanus/Rat which are random targets and specific.
Buildarounds that require cards like Theotar to exist are the flipside of the problem. I think rest of game legendaries and things like Sif shouldn't exist because 1 card in your deck carries your whole game plan and the draw timing on it completely decides matches, especially mirrors. Blood DK mirrors that were all about drawing Mograine first were terribly unfun for example.

demon seed is one of my favourite cards and i still think its design is the worst in the game although i think hunter questline was the bigger problem because it took consistency to the extreme. still i just love the flavor of gul dan sacrificing everything for unlimited power. some of the cards on the list were more of a power preoblem than a design problem like rogue location or sinful brand. i dont think punishing your opponent for the strategy he chose even if its an intended strategy like playing minions is bad. iceblock definitely bad design also objection but both could be fixed by making secret counter cards immune to secrets. flare should be immune to counterspell and eater of secrets should be immune to objection.

Objection is a great design! In fact, Secrets shouldnt automatically triggers. Instead the controling player should have the option to Activate it or not when the triggers happens.
Oh my yogg on the other hand is indeed awful. The cost isnt the problem. The problem is the randomness...
Illucia was another great design. Perfect anti combo card.
Glide is also great. Fortune wheels effects are awsome!
Drew process is also good. Symetrical effect. Players draw more. Mill should be a valid strategy.
Tamsin should only count damage form your cards and hero Power. Not fatigue or you attacking a minion.
