    The rim is red cause you’re outside and the wheel is reflective…

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  7 месяцев назад

      In some cases, that is true. Refective surfaces can show an incorrect reading such as chrome.

    As it is with most shapon tools, the cost of them often isn’t recouped. I am not seeing paying full price work out in the positive for the money this tool can generate. The cheap one though, that’s a better idea

      @@AskTheCarExperts sure they are quality. But the price is so inflated it’s incredible that people buy there stuff. At least stuff that is not exclusive to them. When I buy tools I asses if this tool will make a positive amount of money in a reasonable amount of time. If the answer is no, then why buy it?

    Trick for reflective material put duct tape on it. Good video thanks. Reflective materials do not have accurate measurements. They read temp of objects reflected off them.

    Just curious how it works at farther distances...10 to 30 feet.
    Neato tool. 👍

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  2 года назад +1

      Hi Randy, The tire air leak was done very close of about 2 feet away and the rim heat dissipation was about 6 to 8 feet away. I am sure you can see the heat pattern at 30 feet but it might not be as dialed in.

    Again you have provided advanced technology in researching car abnormalities for car owners. Most of all you provided two different devices that considered cost for the car owners/purchasers. Thanks for your dedication to educating us car owners in solving and selecting the proper devices to help correct car problems.

    Do you think this can be used to detect vacuum leaks?

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  8 месяцев назад

      I think it may help in some cases but an air leak can be very small and it is sucking air I'm so I don't think it would work too well. Best to use a smoke machine for an air leak diagnosis.

    • @shaazy
      @shaazy 8 месяцев назад

      @@AskTheCarExperts Ahh yes, I was just very curious if I can bypass a smoke machine cause that would be an incredible new way of detecting vacuum leaks! Thanks for the reply. I shall still give it a try on my w124. Just got the flir one pro to test

    Very interesting, but one very important note regarding the rim (or general) to consider.
    You have NOT seen the heat of the rim here, but actually thermal reflections. Some materials behave like reflectors in this light spectrum, also glass is a good example for this - it's not transparent in that domain.
    As someone else mentioned in the comments already, in best case cover important parts with tape or whatever - important is to use the same material. Else you'll get different values for same temperature of different materials.
    Again regarding rims, colored white or black would better radiate heat away than reflective.

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  9 месяцев назад +1

      Very very true! You can get a false reading from a thermal reflection. I have see it on Chrome trim for example. Great mote!

    I have a nice thermal imager from matco that's pretty handy. However the wheel scenario and the signature that youre getting is probably due to the reflectivity in the shiny surface. It's kind of cool because you can point your imager at a sheet of steel infront of you and your camera and get a heat signature of you standing in front of it!

    What if an exhaust manifold gasket is blown at the head would that imager be able to show heat leaking away from the manifold with the engine running? That's my big question before I buy one of these is at exhaust leaks can you see the heat flowing away from the connections?

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  Год назад

      It should be able to detect a change in temperature from the exhaust gases

      Absolutely! Have already run into it where I work. Make sure the wheel rim hub surface is not painted. The mating surface is where you need to be concerned.

      @@AskTheCarExperts thank you. It looks like one of those tools that you don't absolutely need, but once you buy it you keep finding uses for it.
      That happened to me when I bought my first non-contact temperature gun. 2 weeks later my $37 tool made me $550. I install flooring and I worked at a house with a radiant heat floor. I needed to nail down tack strip around the perimeter of the rooms for the carpeting. It was a very slow process, but I could the center off every tube in the floor, probably within an eighth of an inch. The tubes were not a consistent distance from the wall and in many locations, the tubes we're directly below where I needed to drive nails.
      I was able to determine that the tubes were installed incorrectly. I went off the deep end a year ago and bought a fluke because I use the tools so often.
      No such thing as too many tools, right 😁
