    I read about this technique in a book called Mixing with your mind but Michael Stavrou many years ago. It really helps develop an ear for EQ. He also has a good technique for learning to hear compression as well. You’ve been really killing it with your videos recently btw!

    • @peteranders6893
      @peteranders6893 2 года назад +2

      Yes. To me it feels like the passion for teaching is coming back. I always learn from every video he makes, but lately it feels like it's more about teaching than correcting the record again and I like that. I my opinion it is impossible to address and counteract all the false information on mixing being put out on youtube. There is just sooo much of it. It's nice of David to give his opinion when things really really go off the rails, but other than that, I just enjoy being in a useful bubble and don't even want to worry about what everyone else is doing. I found my 2-3 guys that I have time to watch and the rest can make 100 silly videos about the "10 best EQ moves", "the only vocal chain you will ever need" and "7 bass lines for making hit music" for all I care. I'm not going to watch any of it anyway.

      @@peteranders6893 Yeah great book I read it about 10 years ago and finally learned how to set a compressor without guess work.

    • @DOENERUSCHI
      @DOENERUSCHI 2 года назад

      Can you elaborate about that technique for setting the compressor?

    • @ProDoucher
      @ProDoucher 2 года назад

      @@DOENERUSCHI Essentially you set the compressor to extreme settings listen to how the compressor reacts to the signal. Start with fast release, max ratio and threshold low enough to get a generous amount of compression. Start by playing with the attack and hear hw that effect the signal. Second, play with the release. Third play with the ratio and finally bring the threshold up to what is suitable.
      This technique helps you develop an ear for compression and learn what each of the functions do regardless of the signal. Eventually you will instinctively know what to set the compressor to and you can make faster decisions without guessing. The technique is perfect for beginners who may not yet learned what to listen for with compression.

    That Empress EQ really sounds great. Even in the frequencies I’m really sensitive to (2k to 5k). Always sounded smooth while also not seeming too colored or obvious. Just nice! Even in plugin land, I like hardware style EQs on the mixbus. I feel like I always make more musical sounding decisions when I’m limited to specific bands and wider curves. Great tip! David, what do you think about this to help with selecting the right frequencies to improve the mix- on a plugin with no visible spectrum display like a channel strip for example- I sometimes cycle through the frequencies but with the gain boost cranked pretty hard- like 5-10db. If I hear a frequency at this level boost that sounds pleasing, then I’m pretty confident that I can back it off a bit and it’s still improving the mix. Also it then seems to help me in hearing and identifying the more subtle 1db-2db of that particular frequency that I otherwise might not have heard.
    Thoughts? Ok method? I’m still learning this stuff!

      I love it but is not subtle, it's A LOT of color and quite an increase in level (and there's no output control on the eq), but I love to use it on vocals, piano, guitars, usually one of the main elements in a mix. it's literally magic on vocals sometimes, same for its top end

    Hey David! I just watched your dithering video and I have a follow up question: I've been experimenting using the Oxford Inflator plugin on my mastering chain AFTER my brick-wall limiter (I use the Slate FG-X). Should I be using an additional dither plugin after the Oxford Inflator or is it okay to use the dithering from FG-X before hitting the Inflator as my final plugin? Additionally, is there anything wrong about using the Inflator BEFORE my limiter or am I okay in using effects after the brick-wall limiter? Thanks so much for your insight! 🙏

    • @mixbustv
      @mixbustv  2 года назад +3

      Dither must be the very last slot or process you do if the brickwall limiter doens't have one on board. You shouldn't put something else after it. And brickwall limiting should be the last processing you do (unless, again, you don't have to use a dither plugin after), so no, inflator after brickwall makes no sense and it could actually cause audible distortion if overshoots.

  • @emanuel_soundtrack
    @emanuel_soundtrack 2 года назад

    yes i guess this is a mistake that is easy to do: you start wrong in one freq. very probably, them go trying more things, but soon your reference are the bad ☠️frequencies (that kill and go to jail) because now they sounded before and you react to them , unless you have a very strong aural representation. So bypassing by every change looks a very good practice, principally when there is a lot of eq to do.Ideal is to have a bypass key command as well that works for every open plugin.

    What do you think of all the streaming services? They all either compress audio or degrade the audio in favor of the video (Yt). And Considering everyone consumes it from a streaming service on their tiny earbuds? Or on their phone....... Would something like apple lossless prevent these issues?
    Next, how loud do you mix at? I have to mix at SUPER low volumes Because my ears are just BLOWN in no time if I don’t. if I don’t want to have to remix it later.

    • @mixbustv

      Nothing you can do about whatever the streaming services do to your music, just like nobody could do anything before where there were mono speakers or people keeping their hi-fi stereo with one speaker in the kitchen and one in the living room or have stupid eq's in their car stereo. The answer is always and has always been only one and the same: you need the best mix possible period. This is why professional mixes translate well everywhere, this is why we have expensive monitors and rooms. There will never be a place and a time where your mix is heard in the absolute perfect listening conditions which is WHY everyone needs a great mix for their songs.
