Dick Cavett has been nominated for eleven Emmy awards (the most recent in 2012 for the HBO special, Mel Brooks and Dick Cavett Together Again), and won three. Spanning five decades, Dick Cavett’s television career has defined excellence in the interview format. He started at ABC in 1968, and also enjoyed success on PBS, USA, and CNBC.
His most recent television successes were the September 2014 PBS special, Dick Cavett’s Watergate, followed April 2015 by Dick Cavett’s Vietnam. He has appeared in movies, tv specials, tv commercials, and several Broadway plays. He starred in an off-Broadway production ofHellman v. McCarthy in 2014 and reprised the role at Theatre 40 in LA February 2015.
Cavett has published four books beginning with Cavett (1974) and Eye on Cavett (1983), co-authored with Christopher Porterfield. His two recent books -- Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary, and Off-Screen Secrets (2010) and Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic moments, and Assorted Hijinks(October 2014) are both collections of his online opinion column, written for The New York Times since 2007. Additionally, he has written for The New Yorker, TV Guide, Vanity Fair, and elsewhere.

I consider it rude. You go on a show, make conversation. I have the upmost respect for the early Bobby, but I think he made Dick talk too much and that runs down the show.

The laughed at him back then for working out when he just sits around playing chess all day, nowadays all the pro gamers have personal trainers, nutritionists...

Yup. They laugh but in truth, chess requires great mind concentration and working out actually helps your brain works better.
They laugh because they likely don't work out, play chess, or any sport, or eat healthy, anyway.

It's funny; Fischer makes fun of Spassky at the beginning, but he consistently ranked Spassky as one of the top ten players of all time. They had a great respect for each other.

He didn't really have any as far as I know. But if he did, it'd probably have been Petrosian. Fischer himself said that he was the toughest of his Soviet contemporaries to beat.
Fischer had it all, good looks, genius and a killer instinct...and Cavett was a great interviewer!

When he started playing tournament chess and later became the top ranked player in the US,
he wasn't too happy that the organizer of the tournament was keeping the majority of the profits and he would be paid barely anything for winning.
He was a big draw for tournaments and people were showing up to see him and see him play.
He forced the organizers to raise the winner's share by letting them know, unless the winner's share has a good chunk of cash, he wouldn't show up.
He didn't beat his chess opponents, he destroyed them.
After he got through with them, they realized that didn't know that much about the game as they thought they did and gave it up.

He didn’t seem awkward to me. He was just answering the questions. He actually seemed like he had a good sense of humor and a bit of arrogance about him, which is appealing in my eyes. The people laughing at him for working out to stay in shape for chess had no idea that he was being serious. People understand it now & they didn’t back then. He was by far the smartest person in the room

I believe he was already ranked 1 in the world for some time. He just wasn’t finishing championship tournaments.
At the time, he was head and shoulders better than anyone else in the world and for about 10 years. The Russians had no chance against him by 1972 despite all their collusion and attempts to prevent him from having his day. To this day he has highest Elo rating (2893) attained of all time late in 1971 during the time he crushed consecutive Russian super Grandmasters 6-0. Bobby only lost 3 games against the next best player in the world, Boris Spassky, out of 21 games played in the championship match of which he won 6 games. Two of the games he lost was because he forfeited the second game of the match by not showing up and the other loss was from blundering a drawn position by aggressively going for the win by sacrificing material in the first game. Only his third loss was without controversy, so he effectively won the title won 6 to 1 not counting the 12 drawn games...
@@OlJackBurton Would've loved if Tal had retained his health in that time period. Having a non-Russian play at such a level was awesome, but Tal had some of the most imaginative attacking mind. It would have been great to see them both at full capacity.

Interesting take on the physical factors in chess. You have to keep yourself in shape in order for your circulatory system to be able to keep pumping adequate amounts of blood to your brain, to keep yourself intensely focused for 4-5 hours. That's why people's prime fades away in their 40-50.
I can see his point about the lighting. If you have to sit there for that long it won't be a joke.
Is it impossible to make annoying lightbulbs which flicker on purpose? Of course not
Most of his complaints were legit. I dont think any of the current players can play in conditions that players of his era were playing, for example : spectators were often too close to the players, lighting was not good, not good prize money and some players used to smoke during the game.
They Doxxed Bobby and the media created a noise around him much like there are doing to Kanye now. That’s one reason why Bobby went underground.
The lighting was definitely an issue and again the media harped on it making Bobby out to look crazy for complaining and not playing.

I'm watching the Fisher vs Spassky movie now, and wanted to see if his personality depiction is accurate. I think Spassky respected Fisher was a natural. I know little bit about Fisher's style, and it reminded me of earlier figure, and I don't like that style that much to try to use personally, though it works for his talent which is more expressive for his command of pieces...which is maybe highest level chess.... Kasparov...I respect a lot in style to try to emulate, for determination to bypass opponent and conquer grid positions. Fisher is great study in alienation, historically though.

Chess players really do need a lot of stamina. On a official tournament it is known that chess players burn up to 6,000 calories in one day! Dont forget that the brain is the organ that requires the most energy.
The reason they burn so many calories is because they walk around for 4-6 hours straight in a classical match

The same applies to poker pros - guys like Gus Hansen is in incredible shape understanding that those long hours at the table can mentally wear you down and all the running and endurance exercise he does is a way to maintain focus during tournaments.
I am a huge fan of the chess game and I do know Bobby Fischer, 😅 well not personally. But for some reason, this is the first time I've heard his voice and I gotta say it's not what I expected. Even his character is different from what I imagined. Looks can be deceiving indeed.

The comment about being logical and leaving your ties on the floor is interesting. Morphy, the 19th century American world master, would apparently leave his shoes lined up in a perfect circle in the middle of his bedroom so you could quickly grab any pair he wanted.
I feel like he would’ve been a mob boss if he didn’t get into chess. He says he would’ve got into sports but…. He’s just got a certain character… I think he’d be some sort of gangster lol.

The reason that older players fade is because you’re mental prowess starts to diminish around 40-45. Not because they can’t sit down anymore

It was Lars I was thinking principally as in Lars Porsena, an Etruscan king who fought against the Roman empire. We see it also in Olaf and Olaffson a Norse name and also an Icelandic GM. I think the suffix was introduced into England via the Vikings. @@vibovitold

Pity Bobby didn't seal the point about the physicality of chess. Maybe the study wasn't done back then with the figure of around 6,000 calories a day. But he could shut the crowd up with something more , he didn't give a crap I suppose.
I don't believe chess really burns 6000 calories per day. Rather he should point to studies that show sitting for too long to be as unhealthy as smoking... and if I remember correctly one of his issues with the way chess is conducted is when people were smoking near the table.
That’s a way overblown estimate of dietary needs to play chess. Elite military units don’t eat for days and execute missions to the tee carrying 80lb rucks

Not the same thing at all. Some of us are in the latter two categories, but would not stick our heads on a gas oven or put a loaded gun to our temple and pull the trigger, nor would we make that decision for another human life or groups of human beings. See what I mean?
Bobby did not commit suicide. He just refused further treatment. Unlike many, He did not like or have a high level of faith and trust in the medical profession, so he decided to opt out of further care. In full blown kidney failure, with zero kidney function, Without ongoing kidney dialysis 3x a week with no transplant it takes about a week to 10 days to pass from uremic poisoning. Bobby made his decision as he was entitled to do. Nobody did it for him. RIP.
