- Two songs in acoustic settings by Love's Bryan Maclean. The stunning Barber John recorded in 1967 and a great version of Alone Again Or which dates from 1972. Maclean was awesome, plain and simple. Let's give the guy some credit.
I didn't realize his importance to the band . I feel ashamed for overlooking someone who has touched me in the past. But I know now.
We sure do....
1967 was a very good year. Nothing like this then or now.
This track is fantastic. What a shame it was hidden away for so many years, it makes me wonder what other gems were unreleased by Maclean. He was an incredible songwriter, singer and performer.
Wow this a great song Barber John. Arthur got all the credit without Bryan there would have been no fantastic album "Forever Changes"
However Arthur did an amazing tour with that Album, I prefer in Concert now to the original.
It's gratifying to get to hear Bryan sing his composition without Arthur Lee drowning out his vocal, like he did on the Electra release.
+Brian Jonestone I wish they had done a duet, but either of their versions is splendid. Bryan Maclean, as the composer-singer knows exactly how he wants it sung, but Arthur Lee has a powerful voice without the little razzle-dazzle phrasing that Brian does sing. But when they throw that orchestral section into the middle of it on the final version ( the hit version) the song is worthy of being an enormous hit, far higher up on the charts than it went in 1967 for Love.
What a beautiful hunting voice. RIP Bryan and Arthur. Love eternally.
This page is RUclips at it's community best. I bought this disk shortly after it came out, while Maclean was still alive and have wanted to share it with serious Love fans ever since. Barber John ranks among the best of Love classics and showcases Maclean's brilliance at his most brilliant. While it would have been awesome on Forever Changes it mollifies the pain to know it has at least seen the light of day.
The depth of Maclean's contribution to love it reflected in the fact the Lee only had half a good album left in him after Maclean's departure and heroin nixed his creativity. Still, Lee was a rare musical genius of the era. Without Lee, Maclean might or might not have ever made it to near stardom. How tragic that he and Lee are already gone.

I skipped the Sundazed release when it came out in '97. Now I'm kicking myself. Vinyl is going for $60 and up on Discogs. Guess I'll have to settle for the CD which is still cheap.
With Maclean passing away it became an instant classic.....
Forever Changes is a great record but Barbara John is not nearly as good as Alone Again Or or Softly to Me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ram pa pa pa. Not even as good as Old Man. By the way Old Man Neil Young was supposed to produce the record but he wanted to make his own records.
@@oppothumbs1 No Barber John is a classic I disagree and should have been on the album(imagine it with the full band backing it!). it's better than half the songs on it but Arthur was the gatekeeper which led to Bryan leaving, effectively ending this amazing band for me.Only for it to carry on in name only.
Alone Again Or's status as one of the all-time greatest songs is proved in this stark version by its composer, Bryan Maclean. Truly awesome.
Saw Love at theFillmore East. As a surprise Bryan came out and played Alone Again Or on Guitar, Arthur on drums, both sang
I was there too....I think
Fell in love with "Alone Again Or" in 1968 as a teenager in NYC. It is amazing how great artists always seem to have their demons. I was fortunate to see Arthur Lee at the club "My Place" in Santa Monica in 1992. It saddens me that Arthur and Bryan are gone. Their music lives on with You Tube
I love the Internet. Been a Love fan since I first heard 'Forever Changes' and it has been my favourite album ever since (and I've listened to a LOT of music in-between) and found Bryan's solo acoustic version of this and 'Alone Again Or' purely by accident today.
The Horizons are Breath Taking when Bryans Songs are the Destination.
@@sirfrancisdrake4285 Amen he is playing for Yeshuah now👑🔥🕊
I met and hung out with Bryan in 1984 when I lived on Maui...
Thats awsome
Greg Desmond did he talk about Jesus at all? He ended up finding Jesus. check out this song of his on youtube called "Daniel (its the Glory)" it's pretty breathtaking about an actual encounter him and his friend had with the Lord. its very powerful to me. Bryan died on Christmas day 1998 at age 50 of a heart attack while in the bathroom of an italian restaurant on California's PCH. Dude I wish I could have met him, I hope ,God willing, I do meet him in heaven
@@psalmtwentyfiveeight Beautiful song Eli I personally love the song called 'the Lamb' by Bryan he sings psalms for Yeshuah now my friend Amen👑🔥🕊
@@marksimons2759 Yeah, i know 'the Lamb' Mark! I like that song i have it saved to His playlist. His song'"hold on for the radiant day "is amazing . I had a conversation in the comment section with a woman who said he wrote the song for his sister to sing i think and at one point bette midler was going to record it.Regarding my comment, i even researched and ended up finding Maria Mckee , Bryans Sister, the former singer of Lone Justice, i tried reaching out to her to ask if she ever heard Bryan speak of this incident. Sadly, i got no response🤷♂
@@psalmtwentyfiveeight He had another sister who responded to me a while ago who said people didn't realise how much he influenced Arthur Lee as Arty wasn't a musician really more of a beatnik type but Bryan was the real deal the drugs and internal politics pushed him out sadly but at least we have his Christian songs Amen👑🔥🕊
Bryan is probally my favorite rhythm guitarist. I also love how he uses his voice a musical instrument. He truly was an underlooked genius, an underexposed musician, and a very humble person. RIP Bryan MacLean
YOU JUST CANT TOUCH THIS PRISTINE RARE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC!!! MEANS MORE & PERSONAL IN LISTENING AS U ARE ONE OF THE FEW DIAMONDS THAT APPRECIATE!!! U ALL SHINE ALONG WITH BRIAN!!! WEL ALL MEET AGAIN!!!
Amazing Bryan he was the catalyst with his signature mexicali acoustic sound and Angelic voice now playing for the King in heaven RIP Bryan Maclean🕊🙏🕯👑🦁🙌📯🎸🎶🎵
Love and credit to Bryan Mclean. Many know you were so overlooked. We loved you every second you did "music".
Have always loved Brian Maclean...and Love.
What a great amazing voice! Bryan! Thank you! For being part of the greatest album ever recorded! Hope you and Arthur are in band playing in the universe somewhere!
I personally don’t believe in a life after death..But if there is I hope Bryan kicked Arthur in the balls
Bryan really was a great songwriter & unique talent i think, great to see he is getting the appreciation he deserves.
Thanks for the great music Bryan RIP
Two great songs, I love this guy and I love Love, I remember hearing Barber John when I was 16 thinking how much cooler we were for listening to this instead of dance music, and I owe it all to my friends dads record collection.
I love this video, Jadon Torres you did a beautiful thing..... Thank you!
* Jason... ; )
I just really love that rup-um-bup-um-bup-um. He's definitely imagining the brass arrangement in between his vocals I think.
Ive never heard two guys. one voice and one guitar. just go in and nail such a heavy vibe as this. wonderful.
It's one guy on guitar Bryan McLean baby👑🔥🕊
What a lovely voice! Had no idea!
This one... this is the one song I wish I had written!
Amazingly, beautifully timeless!
This guy really was quite an amazing and creative guitarist.... never have heard anyone mention his guitar skills though. By the way - I really love the video you made.
ORANGE SKIES- Carnivals and cotton candy, and You, I Love you too...You know I do. The words just make you want to see the world through Arthur Lee's granny glasses.
Brian wrote it!
It is an album full of best songs indeed! "Alone Again Or", "Old Man", and "You Set the Scene" are my current favorites...but they're all amazing.
These were my favorite songs when you wrote your comment. These are still my favorites and will be as long as I have my senses.
love arthur lee! he is a legend but he blocked a lot of bryans songs that should have and could have been in changes!! buy his solo albums!! now!! masterpieces!! he was a prodigy!! he thought he couldnt measure up to barbara streisand!! cmon bryan!! was that a joke bud?? you are a diamond! god rest your soul! i and many others will listen to you forever!! humble sensitive man!! your star will shine on always!!!
Thank you posting my "Kathleen" (off ifyoubelievein on Sundazed) cover. Good to see someone posting great tracks like "Barber John" on RUclips
LoVE lives!
So underrated.... awesome 😎
thanks for this upload .... its so good I am just about to play the whole of this album on another channel . I heard bryans original alone again or then this song barber john and next the whole album ..... I realise now that I attributed too much to Arthur lee ...... bryan had so much talent in my opinion
Bryan was the musician that Arthur could only dream of!RIP👑🔥🕊
after hearing this. Im getting my acoustic back out.
Wow. Just wow. Chills. Guitar and vocal on Alone Again. I could listen to it all night.
I have all bryans albums, they were released by his parents after his passing and there an extremely sad radio interview on the end of one album wich i ask all LoVe and maclean fans to go search out
amazing talent! he perfectly suited arthur lee and together they made perhaps the two greatest rock albums ever!!! thank you for the vid!! i wish he was still alive!
What lovely gems
Alone Again Or - such a lovely, inspired song. My favorite version was The Damed until I heard this. I wish I could thank him for his musical gift to all of us.
man o man takes me right back
This is all about talent, execution as well but alway creativity on top: for the ages, forever changes!
is there a more moving song than this? its a crime that love are not in the rock n roll hall of fame! everything you need and want from music are distilled in love! so many people think its all beatles this n that! bryan and arthur stand on the shoulders of the giants!
"Love Will Be Here" by Bryan MacLean was arranged to be recorded on Forever Changes, but Arthur said no at the last time. And this song is more than just OK.
I'm a huge Arthur Lee fan but I like Bryan's versions more because of the tenderness and feelings of introspective in his playing. Arthur wrote a lot of great songs but on the album credit is given to Bryan Maclean for "Alone again or".
When I heard this the first time .....maybe a year or so ago....Alone Again was sung by Brian MacClean...it was the second song after Barber John...now this version has substituted a different version of the song....Alone Again with Arthur Lee's version of the song..What happened to Brian MacClean's version...cannot find it on RUclips..and I really liked it!
First heard Love at Sabalo Beach in Mazatlan in 1967. Have had a symbiotic relationship since..
Hey!!! Of all the years I knew Bryan & Love,,how did I forget this song,,great reminder,,great song from him........far out!!!!!!
Thanks so much for posting this. Those of us that know.....know. Bryan was amazing.
Love's first hit, My Little Red Book, was written by an up-and-coming artist named Burt Bacharach.
Fantastic! Thanks. What big talent...
one of my all-time favorite musicians . . and bands !!! . . . ever !!!
The true sound of Love. Bryan MacLean and Arthur Lee were a magical combination.
A new album is coming out! Hope Bryan has some some songs on it. Some songs that was going to be part of a double. Forever Changes album!
He could write songs that were amazing, I love this! RIP Bryan Maclean
I finally bought a copy of ifyoubelivein by Bryan which both these tracks come from.
Its a collection of demo's so the sound quality is a bit poor (tape hiss). However it is well worth getting as you get to hear some of Bryan's other compositions from the love period. I normally don't enjoy poorly produced records but this is the exception. If you are at intrested in Love you should get a copy.
You are a good man for posting this.
Thank you Brian:)
Mclean wrote "Alone Again" and Lee added "Or". O'Sullivan removed "Or" for his own song.
In my opinion, "Forever Changes" was basically created upon Mclean's drafts and brainstorming. I mean both A&B sides. Lee came up with lyrics and finalized the songwriting process that Mclean and Forssi were previously working on.
Arthur Lee's most influential musical figure back then was his mate, Bryan Mclean, not McGuinn any more by the time they recorded "Da Capo".
Love this
Thanks for posting,Bryan's talent has been so overlooked.
beautiful soul this dude had at his best... alone again is so beautifully haunting. ranks w/ the doors crystal ship as the most melacholy soulful ballads to come out of calif in the '60's.
Of course gotta give B Maclean credit...Love wouldn't be Love without those haunting songs like 'Old Man'...
Magnifico, you don't get talent like this man everyday
Thanks for this.
What a treasure of an upload! The Barber John recording better taught me how to like the Love version. And that it sounds like it was recorded yesterday... Unbelievable.
my gosh what lovely music.I never heard this and Im a huge Love fan. thanks.
great songwriiter from Love-thanks fr this
Away from my collection and wanting to hear Bryan's version of Alone Again... Thank you, the guy is criminally underrepresented on this ere youtube thingumy. Good work sir!
Gotta L♥️V E Bryan
Thanks for posting this.
An absolute gem of a recording.
Why, thank you indeed!
this 2 songs are soo crazy thx for upload
Thanks for posting this is amazing
This is from If You Believe In (on the Sundazed label)
came out a year or so before Bryans passing on Christmas
What a talent
Thanks for this
barber john rocks!
Very cool of you to put this track up - great start off track for the ifyoubelievein album!
just posted a video response reviewing Bryans last solo cd (intra muros)
Damn, he got a lot better at singing between Forever Changes and the Alone Again Or here.
Nicely put. I agree.
Excellent.
Wonder if Bryan wanted this in Forever Changes...
You could argue all day about arthur and bryan? Me personally!!!! They were fucking dynamite TOGETHER!!!! 👍🐸 🙌 🎈 🎇🎆🎇🎆🎇🎆
That was real nice! Barber John would make a fantastic Jethro Tull song. Ian are you reading this!!! Ha Ha! Nice job!
Well I don't know if shadows have anything to do with Junk. The natural reaction to LSD in many cases was to get into smack to smooth out the troubled mind afterwards. I think acid did way more damage that opiates (which are basically produced by the body in any case). Well thats my experiance for what its worth. Bryan certinly wrote great songs both with and without Arthur. I must say that his praise and worship songs don't sound like a man in the shadows.
Imagine this in forever changes or the previuos album, it would be cool
love both mclean & lee! no time 4 people who say him or him is better! 1st incarnation of love are legends togeer whoever wrote this or sung that doesn't matter! do prefer Arthur lee`s singing tho! barber john is my favourite mclean track! awesome!
@11xzxzxz A influences B does not mean A is greater than B. I only said that during 66-67, Bryan's musical influence on Lee was greater than that of the Beatles, Miles Davis, Mcguinn or Johann Sebastian Bach whom Lee always mentioned as his greatest influence. The main difference between Lee and McLean was that Lee was more versatile and he knew how to turn great ideas into great final production.
When did he get that amazing vibrato? He didn't have it in 1967.
Well said.
Barber John would have been great on forever changes over old man, wonder why they didn’t use it and make an electric arrangement
I don't think Arthur Lee wanted Bryan to have many songs, just his own and maybe one song per album he threw a bone to Bryan now and again
@@sunkintree I agree which is a shame because their songs worked so well together
Did Love actually record " Barber John " ?
Is this from Bryan's solo album ?
IIRC Bryan had songs he thought could have gone on " De Capo "
In my humble opinion, Bryan Maclean was America's answer to Donovan Leitch - a great wordsmith.
@shaneshaky1 But if you listen to "Old Man" on Forever Changes (1967), or even "Barber John" here, he doesn't sound at all like the 1972 performance of "Alone Again Or". I love how he sings "I won't forget" at the beginning. His singing had obviously improved a lot.
He couldn't continue because of the heroine, not because of Lee. Can they both not rip?
Ifyoubelievein.
@Zepster77
Thanks, next month when i get a new laptop I am going to return to making videos of this sort again.
Don't think he wrote that song
Just posted a Bryan cd review as a response to this great video
You have great taste!!!
Did you know him?
they were all fed up
with lee
I tried a cover of "Kathleen" and "Alone again or"
"You set the scene" is tricky for one guitar, though I have the chords for it in a UK songbook (!)
@Flunder This is one person playing in real time.
