This radio recording is even better then the recording made. You hear her energy between the audience and herself. Such a voice and she STAYS wonderful!
i was there on that saturday afternoon in the Concertgebouw, unforgettable performance of both Ewa Podles and Anne Sophie von Otter. Marc Minkowski is the best Händel conductor ever! thanks for posting
I remember the public of the Concertgebouw audibly gasping at Podles ornamentations :-) by the way Jonjon71, I think the orchestra was Les Musiciens du Louvre.
Nathalie Stutzmann released a CD last year where she sings this aria and I liked her interpretation. It's not galloping like this one, but full of heroism and charm and impeccable singing. I love Ewa and this performance is such a blast, and there are other versions that stand on their own in musicianship and substance as well.
if you want to be very extreme,We can say that actually the highest notes made by Ewa podles is the two staccato notes she made mouth closed in the Lesson Scene of la Fille du régiment, the video is on youtube. in the scene to show to Mariella Devia a vocal exercise she made to staccati wich are actually a high E and a high E flat , then she holds a high C sharp ( wich is this D flat she holds in dover giustizia) and she scales down to the low C sharp,3 octaves lower... Circus again.. hehehe !
Yes! her lowest not recorded is the extreme low B in La fille du Régiment in a cadenza in the aria "Pour une femme de mon nom" and the highest is 1/2 tone higher then here! She hits a natural high D in the cadenza of "Sudo il guerriero" the Anna's aria in the Oratorio Il Ritorno di Tobia by Hadyn
Actually, her range goes a bit lower than the low D. She hits a low B in her first aria as the Marquise in La Fille du Regiment. I heard her in this role in Houston last October and you can hear it on the commercial video from La Scala 1996.
hehehe if you like very large range i suppose that you know Monica Sinclair , you can hear her 3 octaves candanza here on youtube in Tolomeo aria " Si spietata il tuo rigore": From High C to low C - I use to call her Ewa Podles'grandma... hehehe cause she used to do the same crazy things years before. in her Bradamante part in Alcina she do also very low cadenzas. She put her crazyness almost everywhere.. ehehe in messiah , scarlatti , rossini.. :-)
almost a voice from another time; i love vibrato and wish it back in fashion - although i know it takes discipline and taste and they can't all be podles...
i have some reserve on the phenomenon Sack.. i listen to it like circus .. and it's not to bad having some show off sometimes.. But i am not agree about robin beside her high register she really showed that she was a great artist. You can like or not this side of her voice , and the old fashion style of course.... but you be sad also if she did the choice to not show to the world the unique instrument she had.
Yes would be funny to hear her in lady macbecth! And strangly by experience the mezzos succeed better the high D then the soprano: i've heard Verret, Cossotto, Zajick, Baltsa I have a personal theory about that... anyway...hehehe
Ewa ruined this aria for me. Well, every other singer I listen to singing 'Dover giustizia' sounds pale and weak in comparison. So I have to stick with this recording. :D
She does things with her voice I’ve never heard before plus sails into the stratosphere ! Miraculous !
What a singer she is!
LEGENDARY PERFORMANCE! THANK GOD WE HAVE IT RECORDED!
A truly rare voice and a hard working singer who trained it to produce miracles.
I'm going crazy for this performance!!!She'is fantastic!! Thank you jon
Most incredible contralto da capo ever, EVER!
Absolutely sensational! Sweeps everything off the face of the earth.
It's true - the voice is the grandest of musical instruments. Ewa has the most dramatic voice range I have ever heard from a contralto.
The best interpretation!!!!!
Just Amazing !!! What musicianship !!!
This radio recording is even better then the recording made.

Such a voice and she STAYS wonderful!
Yes, simply the greatest for this aria !
Marvelous!

Ewa Podles ruined Polinesso for me, now I cannot possibly accept anybody else in this role! She is PERFECT!

She IS definitively Polinesso! Can't imagine seriously any other singer in that role..
OMG, her vocal agility is crazy!!! xD
R.I.P.
❤

oui, tout à fait! un très bel aigu pour une mezzo! que reprochez-vous à ce son ?
I know that felicity palmer sang Polinesso.. i am looking if someone have a recording of that!
She's POLINESSO
most sopranos don't even have high Ds in their 50s. that's pretty impressive
I'm confused by low D, you mean D3 or D2? And by high D you mean D5 or D6? I feel dumb, but I really am infatuated with her voice.
hehehe if you like very large range i suppose that you know Monica Sinclair , you can hear her 3 octaves candanza here on youtube in Tolomeo aria " Si spietata il tuo rigore": From High C to low C - I use to call her Ewa Podles'grandma... hehehe cause she used to do the same crazy things years before. in her Bradamante part in Alcina she do also very low cadenzas. It was more like a high C# wanting to be a high D. Remarkable never the less.

Assuming C3 as the central C of the piano, the D was a D5, and her lowest note is a Bb1 ;-) (I repeat: if C3 is middle-central C) ;-)

ERRATUM : Lowest note... and il Ritorno di tobia by Haydn
Must be a nightmare this aria soooo fast!

this gave me chicken skin!!
