Looks great Trevor. I am looking forward to getting the Star Adventurer Gti and have one on order with Bintel in Sydney where I live. I have a couple of portable rigs as I am a pilot who travels frequently. The little one is an AZ-Gte in EQ mode with a 50ED refractor / ZWO 485. That works great and set up is five minutes. It is the one I use when moving frequently. In Perth Australia I have another set up I store in our hangar as we spend a lot of time in Perth. It is the 72ED / ZWO 183 Pro on an Ioptron Smart EQ Pro Plus. I take that one if away for two weeks or more. Sometime I set it up at the airport and the plane is my astro shack. Lots of snacks readily available. Love all your videos.
Outstanding portable rig. I am getting a GTI to use with my Mirrorless camera rig, now I know I can upgrade to a great portable deepsky rig. Thank you so much!
I used plate solving for the first time the other night using Astroberry and Ekos on my Raspberry Pi. It was a revelation in ease of getting to the objects!
Love my RPi and EKOS... does everything the ASI Air does but you can use any cameras you want r4ather than being bound into the ZWO ecosystem... all open source too. Jasem deserves a Knighthood for services to astrophotography (along with suitable Honours for the other contributors to EKOS) 😊😊
Thank you for sharing your set up! If I can ever afford to build out a system, your research will have me years of effort and so I really appreciate benefiting from all your work.
I completely agree that the ASAIR (both the older Pro and now the Plus) were some of the most important upgrades to start taking good images and quit wasting time. The new image cross feature is awesome. I have been extremely pleased what they have been able to do with a reconfigured raspberri pi.
@@liamgtav Do you have any issues with your mount/setup where it'll guide and track perfectly fine for 5-7 images and then your DEC goes crazy off? I usually then have to stop the plan and restart.
@Astrobackyard - couple places you didn't mask your GPS co-ords (when showing telescope control screen) And yeah. Plate solving saves a ton of time. When doing plate solve to get scope position, you want to be doing it closer to the celestial equator than to the pole. My new rig (powered by APT) started complaining to me about that one time!
I started my AstroPhotography journey last fall with a star tracker, digital camera, and telephoto zoom lens. Polar alignment and subsequently finding my targets have certainly proven to be challenging ... BUT ... I like that I'm learning the night sky through the process of star hopping. Even though it's been time-consuming to do it this way, it has given me FAR more satisfaction (as a beginner) than if I had used technology to do everything for me. I definitely plan to "upgrade" down the road to a setup like this one, but not until that "I actually did that!" satisfaction wears off.

I got the magic cable (RJ something or other) this past November. WOW! It makes life so much better in combination with my ASIair, HEQ5 Pro mount, and iPad. Plate solving for polar alignment not only makes alignment possible when an object is blocking the view of Polaris, but it also eliminates awkwardness of viewing polaris through the polar scope, making mount adjustments, all while trying not to bump the tripod. Now I can set the tripod height based upon obtaining the best stability for the telescope and camera, and not whether I can bend my neck to peep through the polar scope. As you point out, ZWO has done a great job with their software to get the telesope on target. I've gone from typically needing about 30 minutes of set up time to start photographing to 10 minutes.
I'm new to this and I just purchased a similar rig using EQM-35 pro, SVbony telescope with ZWO camera, guide camera, and ASIAir. My challenge is that ASIAir is not able to plate solve. I need to figure out the focal length and FOV but I'm currently struggling with it. It states that FOV is out of range and giving me FOV ? x ? Any suggestions?
Just getting back into imaging and put a new setup together using my old SW AZ/GTi mount in EQ mode and a SW 50ED Evogiude as my main scope (w/Starizona FF). Also a guide scope, ASIAIR Pro, ZWO EAF and EFW with a ASI533MC Pro camera.. And as a norm have had clouds after getting it setup. Thanks Trevor....
Excellent! Welcome to plate-solving! I typically refer to it as, "the Black Magic of computer-driven astronomy." You may want to consider WiFi instead of the USB cable for mount control. WiFi has terrible range, but can manage the foot or two from the computer to the mount. One less cable.
I searched for the Whirlpool galaxy in my backyard for better part of 2 hours, getting 7 pictures before needing to flip my mount and having to start again. And now this exists. My god I need to start saving hard.

Been doing it for ages even when there was no planetarium mode on the asiair, it is a game changer and will go better when you can plan using the planetarium feature.
I use a laptop (sharpcap/stelarium) rather than asiair but even with my wide lens there's been couple of times where plate solving and framing from planetarium display was invaluable.
Enjoyed your post. You're a lucky man Trevor. I'm in waiting mode for the same mount you have in your post. A quick look around via Google confirms they are as rare as hens teeth. With any luck, maybe mid July, here's hoping for a positive outcome. (Oh, and the clouds! Clear skies at night seem to be but a memory.)
Hey Trevor nice Video and congrats on the new move. Congrats on plate solving, once you start you can't go back. I completely understand your reasons for not though especially because swap out so much doing reviews and such - but the ASIAir knows what is connected so it does not matter now. I purchased a second one myself. I have one dedicated to the Edge800 system and the second AIR will be dedicated to the portable system - ASI2600MC and Canon EF 200mm USMII lens. - Cheers
Thanks for this video. I did not realize what the small map in the corner was for. I was using Skysafari but it had difficulty connecting. A built in planetarium! Cool. I've been using all the other features of the software but I can't wait to try the Planetarium possibilities now. The great thing about ASIAir is they are always improving so even I cannot keep up. Keep up making astrophotography easier Trevor. You make excellent points in your videos.
This setup is almost $8000 which is out of my budget range for my 1st telescope. Also I cannot find any planetary imaging with this setup. (Edit: after reading some more, this cant take planetary or galaxy photos due to small 61 mm apeture. Its mainly used to take pictures of nebulas) For my first scope, I want a motorized scope with green laser pointer so I can learn the night sky. I am thinking of purchasing this setup with only the 50mm guide scope, zwo 120mm mini, airplus wifi and green laser attached to the guide scope. No telescope/zwo 2600mm pro/filter. This will reduce overall cost to $2000. In future, I can purchase a telescope when I am ready for astrophotography. Is there a better way to set up a motorized mount with wifi go-to functions and attach a green laser pointer to it? Can the 50mm guide scope attach directly to mount? Can the Airplus plate solve with only the 50mm guide scope? Only other good options I see are also expensive (with motorized auto-align, go-to feature, wifi): Stelinna 3.1 inch $4000 Nexstar Evolution 8 inch HD with starsense $3000 (use to be $2400) Vespera 2 inch $1500 I think Celestron 8 inch w/ starsense is the best option but due to pandemic they are out of stock. Also charging $600 more than when it was released 6 years ago. Maybe I will just wait until they release a new version.
I am using an Skywatcher AZ GTI Mount with EQ Wedge on my Gitzo-tripod. Works great. The mount is GOTO. Max load is 5 KG. Not for big reflectors or Cassegrains if you want to do Planets,, though... But for your setup with no telescope, it can be used easy! Buy an telescope or DSLR camera later for photographing :) AZ GTI cost around 300 euro.
Great video, and glad to see you are using the Raptor, going to take mine out as well next week with a light-weight set up as well. Nice meeting you at AIC, and Ashley won't have to screen this comment from you :) you are still doing great work, and 99.9% of people appreciate you. BTW the music, fades, b-rolls, are better than ever...but where was Rudy?
Great video. Thank you for the wrap up. I have been using the ASIair Pro and it’s plate solving capability for almost two years now. My portable set-up is an 102mm/F7 Orion ED refractor with an ASI294MC on an iOptron AZM Pro mount. No guiding for 30s subs. No problem. It worked excellently even in conjunction with SkySafari 6. I was missing the camera framing and rotation. Now I used the SkyAtlas feature last night for the very first time. Sooooo convenient :-) The Sky Atlas interface and map is something to get used to, though. Not very detailed and not as easy to read as SkySafari and similar planetarium programs. You need to basically know what you are looking for in the ASIair Sky Atlas. But it adds so much more convenience, especially for image framing and camera rotation. Cannot got much easier and portable than that… so true
Can’t wait for the German dude’s review on this setup. Nevertheless I’m sure it works great and that Trevor will have a blast in the summer with this rig.
Good Morning, maybe my question is a bit silly. How actually track the celestial objects using SW GTi. I connected mount via SynScan to Stellarium, finished with 3 stars alignment,. Used GO-TO on Stellarium to point to object. What is a next with mount? Should I changed speed to 1x sideral? What is a next step before shooting?
Absolutely loving your videos. They are so inspiring. I have a question, I have a Canon RF 600 F4, paired with the R5. Can I use the skywatcher star adventure with that set up?
I've always had an interest in the vast universe but recently I don't know what finally sparked it but I got into books, videos and now this. I would love to start this as a hobby, what would be recommended on a 2500$ budget?
Phenomenal!!!! Please Trevor, could you kindly list ALL the parts of your set up as well as the filter wheel you’d use and electronic focuser? Thank you again
Hi Trevor, loved the video and your infectious enthusiasm for all things Astro. The ASI Plus is in such short supply in the UK that I decided to take a punt & bought a s/h ASI Air Pro at a great price from a UK astronomy selling site. This along with a cheap Wi-Fi extender has completely transformed my astrophotography experience at a time when I was becoming frustrated with how long it was taking to get set up & capturing images. I can now set up my HEQ5 pro polar align & be shooting in less than 15 minutes rather than the long winded manual PA & less than accurate multi star alignment routine. More of my time under elusive clear skies is spent obtaining data on targets which I have struggled to acquire in the past. I know detractors gripe about the ASI Air’s lack of support for third party Astro cameras but I’m still using a supported DSLR and having a great experience nonetheless. A cooled camera is still a long way off for me but I’m having so much enjoyment with this set up that It can wait a little longer. Keep up the great work & I can’t wait to see what comes from your new dark sky location😀🌙🔭
How well did it guide Trevor? A lot of folk use the AZGti in EQ mode but it has its limitations. This looks like an obvious upgrade while staying portable but it needs to be worth the cost. Would be interested to hear your early bird thoughts!
Interesting mount selection in the ASIAir. Others noted to use the EQMod Mount option, which is what i used with my SA GTI, but my Goto misses...badly, and doesn't want to plate solve. :(😢
Always excellent videos, thanks!!! I have one important question about the cable connecting the ASIAIR to the mount. Can I use the "EQ mod mount" setting and use an EQ mod cable (like on the S-W EQ6R Pro) to control the GTI OR do you recommend the "Skywatcher AZ-GTi Synscan WiFi" setting and if so, what kind of cable do you recommend from GTi to ASIAIR Plus?
It looks really amazing… For a beginner with astrophotography, starting with a mirrorless or dslr camera, would you recommend the star adventurer 2i or the newer star adventurer gti? For the next step, is the 72 ED Skywatcher a good option? Thank you very much!
Most likley, but screw the limit, I used an Az gti in the Eq Mode, so basically the same thing his mount and used it with a bigger scope (72mm Refractor). Without counterweights it weighs a total of 9lb and I was able to to at least 600s exposures, under perfect contitions even 1800s.
What did you use to mount the Asiair to the tripod legs. I’m looking for the same setup. Great video but never showed a polar alignment with it. Still trying to learn this new system since I just started astrophotography since I’ve been visual observing for two years.
Spectacular image Trevor. I am waiting patiently to get my 2600 MC Pro back from the shop so I can throw it on my WO Zenithstar 61 and capture the same image. And yes, ASI Air and it’s plate solving abilities are amazing. Great to use just one piece of software for focusing, polar alignment (even without needing to see Polaris), plate solving and image sequencing. Boy, I got into this hobby at just the right time!! Dr B from Manitoba, Canada 🇨🇦
Awesome video, Trevor! I use the exact same configuration with my setup, only it's using an HEQ5 instead of the GTI. I select "EQMod Mount" and Baud 9600. I have the GTI on pre-order and was expecting I would use the same mount settings since I would be using the same "EQ Mod" cable. Did you try the "EQMod Mount" option and find that "SkyWatcher AZ-GTi/SynScan WiFi" was the only mount selection that worked?
I'm choosing between ZWO Seestar S50 and Star Adventurer GTI Go To, and I don't know what to choose anymore. I'm a beginner, I only have a Canon EOS, lenses that are not very suitable for astrophotography and a weak tripod, the problem is that I don't have time to spend the whole night outside fighting with the wind and focusing tests and I don't want cables to connect to setup. So, I'm interested in go to functions and the possibility of shooting via wifi with the possibility of seeing the photo on the tablet or smartphone. star adventurer gti seems like a right choice here, but if you also have to buy an apo refractor, asi and asiair camera I'm going out of budget :( So I'm considering zwo seestar s50 for fast photos, but unfortunately this one only has 10 seconds of shutter speed. There's the possibility of using star adv gti go to with a canon eos and lens without asiair and controlling shots from the tablet or smartphone without this asiair?
I recently sold my Skywatcher NEQ6 mount and Celestron SCT 8" scope along with the KQIK autoguider as it was too heavy and I hardly used the set up. But, this rig looks enticing. I am interested the battery to be used for a remote site.
Seems like a really good mount for its size class and especially a very easy to use platform to increase data collection time cutting down that "dead" time. Do you have any numbers for guiding accuracy of the Star Adventurer GTI yet?
Love this video and it gives me a good guideline for setting up my own rig which I am about to at the moment. just curious to know: because the asi2400 is too expensive for me i can also do the same with a dslm or astro modified dslr right? and also telescope and guidescope are changeble right? so the key components of this rig is the star adventurer gti and the asiair plus - everything other is more or less free to change especially because of the budget. great video and love your work. cheers from Austria
I tried going to Polaris to center and "Goto" but got a message it was too far away? ( I could see it on the screen) If I plate solve on a few other stars I can then got to say M31 and track & image?? Keep up the great work and Happy Holidays!! Mike
can't wait for my SA GTI to arrive :) Looking forward to finally having a night and light travel setup! On the other end, I'm going to upgrade my EQ6-R to a 10u GM1000 HPS so these small and light setups are a great alternative when you just can't be bothered to setup. btw, how have you connected the ASI Air to the tripod?
Question Trevor, do I need internet service to use the ASI AIR if I drive to the middle of nowhere @ bortle class 2 skies? Or is it wifi through your tablet/phone? Thanks buddy! Clear skies! 👍
5-10k or more, but can also be done cheaper but more intensive on your side meaning you have to put more work into a shot with a 2k set up than you would with a 5-10k set up
So I have this mount, cable, red cat 71 sitting in the rig and a ASIAIR plus. Do you have to do any sort of alignment or tell the mount or asi what hemisphere you’re in? Only reason I ask is because for one I’m new to all of this and two when I connected to the wifi and was browsing the settings I saw coordinates already put in there for the Longitude and latitude. When I chose the andromeda Galaxy to target it went the complete opposite way of what my skyview app said where andromeda was. I didn’t have a lot of time to play with the settings and such. Only had about 10 minutes of clear skies before clouds rolled in. Will do some more testing this weekend. Any input about this would be greatly appreciated. Take care everyone!
I never understood your aversion to plate solving. Even when you're switching gear, you can set up profiles in your AP software. How does doing a 3 star alignment not waste more time than loading a profile with your focal length?
Trevor, was that rj45 cable a usb on one end? I want to make sure I get the right one. I ordered the gti. Getting sick of lugging my cgem dx out in the yard all the time. Lol

Great shot! Love this target :) Nice video Trevor!
This setup is almost $8000 which is out of my budget range for my 1st telescope. Also I cannot find any planetary imaging with this setup. (Edit: after reading some more, this cant take planetary or galaxy photos due to small 61 mm apeture. Its mainly used to take pictures of nebulas)
For my first scope, I want a motorized scope with green laser pointer so I can learn the night sky.
Only other good options I see are also expensive (with motorized auto-align, go-to feature, wifi):
Stelinna 3.1 inch $4000
Nexstar Evolution 8 inch HD with starsense $3000 (use to be $2400)
Vespera 2 inch $1500
I think Celestron 8 inch w/ starsense is the best option but due to pandemic they are out of stock. Also charging $600 more than when it was released 6 years ago. Maybe I will just wait until they release a new version.
I really do hope you didn't let this scammer scam you :)
@@antoniohaluzan3396 who do you mean “this scammer” who is the scammer
Great video, and glad to see you are using the Raptor, going to take mine out as well next week with a light-weight set up as well. Nice meeting you at AIC, and Ashley won't have to screen this comment from you :) you are still doing great work, and 99.9% of people appreciate you. BTW the music, fades, b-rolls, are better than ever...but where was Rudy?
Total price $6942.42. 😳
Congratulations Trevor great video
I use an usb connection between the SA-GTi and Asiair. Works also very Good.
@ AstroBackyard, what’s your opinion about the black hole discovery and it being photographed? 🤷♂️
This looks like a fantastic combination of products but any suggestions for a more affordable camera?
You should try the little ZWO 30mm f4 guide scopes for more portability. I easily guide my rig down to sub 0.5” with it.
Hi Trevor, loved the video and your infectious enthusiasm for all things Astro. The ASI Plus is in such short supply in the UK that I decided to take a punt & bought a
s/h ASI Air Pro at a great price from a UK astronomy selling site.
I am a young astronomer and astrophotographer congratulations Trevor
7:53 dude you got a spider hiding in your ST4 port, better evict him from his home lol
Thanks, this is exactly the type of travel setup I will make, howerver, how much does it weight and does it fit in a cabin bag?
How well did it guide Trevor? A lot of folk use the AZGti in EQ mode but it has its limitations. This looks like an obvious upgrade while staying portable but it needs to be worth the cost. Would be interested to hear your early bird thoughts!
Which is a better telescope for astrophotography?
:--- An 8 inch dobsonian or a six inch reflector on eq mount with motor drive
Please help me out :)
Interesting mount selection in the ASIAir. Others noted to use the EQMod Mount option, which is what i used with my SA GTI, but my Goto misses...badly, and doesn't want to plate solve. :(😢
Another great video Trevor, Thanks. Have ordered a GTi. Question/comment: I assume you polar aligned, correct?
Great video as always. Your image at the end was brilliant.....however, how many and how long were the exposures?
Love to see this setup using camera lens with a adaptor for the ASI 2400mc pro.
Wonderful RUclips!!! What is the screen that you are using that connects to the computer? It has Astrophotography software.
Great pictures. What would you recommend to an absolue beginner for deep sky photography or even capturing planets in terms of equipment.?
I really do hope you didn't let this scammer scam you :)
It looks really amazing… For a beginner with astrophotography, starting with a mirrorless or dslr camera, would you recommend the star adventurer 2i or the newer star adventurer gti? For the next step, is the 72 ED Skywatcher a good option? Thank you very much!
Great setup ! I'm curious, does this setup exceed the 5.5 pounds of payload (50% of 11 pounds) of the mount for astrophotography ?
Most likley, but screw the limit, I used an Az gti in the Eq Mode, so basically the same thing his mount and used it with a bigger scope (72mm Refractor). Without counterweights it weighs a total of 9lb and I was able to to at least 600s exposures, under perfect contitions even 1800s.
@@matsphotography2843 You can "screw the limit" for a while, as your internal gears deteriorate at a much faster rate..
What did you use to mount the Asiair to the tripod legs. I’m looking for the same setup.
Great video but never showed a polar alignment with it. Still trying to learn this new system since I just started astrophotography since I’ve been visual observing for two years.
7000$ .wow. Isn't thats way too much for tiny setup like this? 😅
Okay so the million dollar question...what's the total cost of that rig?
Nevermind....too much
Spectacular image Trevor.
Love the vibe of this video too! Well done!
Wow. What an image. What a set up. Did the move go well?
It looks like I just found my first astrophotography setup!
Great vid Trevor. How did you get hold of the GTi mount? they won't even be available here in Australia for another couple of months at least.
As a rank beginner, this is certainly awesome. But just how much -- ballpark is fine -- does all this run??
Do you have any tips or tricks for getting your cameras into focus once you get them in the right position?
I love the beat in the background. Who made it?
I really do hope you didn't let this scammer scam you :)
@@antoniohaluzan3396 nope 😉
I tried going to Polaris to center and "Goto" but got a message it was too far away? ( I could see it on the screen) If I plate solve on a few other stars I can then got to say M31 and track & image?? Keep up the great work and Happy Holidays!! Mike
can't wait for my SA GTI to arrive :) Looking forward to finally having a night and light travel setup!
On the other end, I'm going to upgrade my EQ6-R to a 10u GM1000 HPS so these small and light setups are a great alternative when you just can't be bothered to setup.
btw, how have you connected the ASI Air to the tripod?
quick question, what exactly is the cable you mentioned? great video i'll try to capture the veil with my redcat
Thanks for the great video Trevor! Can you tell me the model of the dovetail plate you're using?
Question Trevor, do I need internet service to use the ASI AIR if I drive to the middle of nowhere @ bortle class 2 skies? Or is it wifi through your tablet/phone? Thanks buddy! Clear skies! 👍
I'm with you man, I'm a dinosaur. I need to check out this ASIair stuff.
Great video. I would love to get a portable setup someday. Good luck with the move
I really do hope you didn't let this scammer scam you :)
@@antoniohaluzan3396 I did not. Thanks
Likely a dumb question - how is the ASI air getting its image? Is it from your Canon camera or a separate small scope and camera?
Whats a setup like this going to set you back thats what I'd like to know?
No way! also AstroBiscuit is trying also.
Lol
Question please: How can I connect my DSLR Canon EOS 5D Mark IV astrophotography camera on my Skywatcher Evostar 80ED?
keep up with the awesome work!
