The 300mm F4 ED AFS (non VR) works perfect for me. Shooting airplanes and fast cars, so good light is needed. D7200 makes it into a 420mm or so. Bought it second hand for 600 Eur and it indeed is an old-school tank. From Japan. It will outlive me.
you guarantee that worthed the money ?
No crop sensor does not make this lens 420mm!The focal range is same. The image is smaller with crop sensor that's it
It's not "hasta luega", it's "hasta luego". I really appreciate your videos. You gave us a very informative content!
recently .. 180mm/2.8 ED + 300mm/4 ED - HAPPY! Thanks 🥰
thankyou, great advice. Both practical and informative for those revisiting the nikon range after 10 years. So much has changed. but i as your mentioned newer isn't better.
There should be a Ken emoji
elevensixty surprised no bobble head 🙂
😝💩
It would be awesome if you'd make a review of the Nikon 300mm Af (non af-s)
Where you go a bit more in depth
Just picked up the D series f4 for 290 aussie dollars :)
I LOVE the fact that the popular view out there is that these older lenses cant get the 'best' images out of the high megapixel cameras.
Thanks for this video. I was lucky to get a mint NIKKOR 300mm f/4 D ED-IF AF-S for Au$ 725. Beautifully built and extremely sharp. I don't find the lack of VR an issue.
Great review. I think the nikon d500 with the new 300 and 1.4 converter represents a great combination of top quality gear and light weight. I am going to pick up an Olympus camera for shorter focal lengths where it has a serious size and weight advantage, but even that system gets heavy and expensive as you go longer. I think a d500 with the latest 300 and 1.4 converter is a more flexible and desirable package than an Olympus omd-em1 mark ii and their 300 f4. When it comes to continuous focus tracking and high iso that may be needed for fast action the Nikon still has the edge and the price of both systems would be very similar. For the price of the Olympus 300 f4 you can get the nikon 300 f4 ph lens and the 1.4 tele-converter.
Here are images shot with Nikkor 300mm lenses. Two were shot with a 300mm F/2.8 G ED IF AF-S VR I bought used for $3,350 and one with a Nikon 300mm f/4 AF ED I bought used for $300, on Ken's recommendation. Without peeking at the specs, I challenge all to tell me which image came from which lens.

I like No 1 and I think it is from F/4, beautifully warm
Of course number 1!!!Old Nikon lenses are treasure!Nothing can give you more pleasurable images!
I guessed correctly only 2 from 3. I was distracted!! :)
I have the AF-S and it works a treat..
For frogs, snakes, butterflies, IF will focus at just under five feet. Awesome lens. Use a bean bag or drop it on a Sirui monopod and you won't miss VR. In good light you can get excellent results with a 1.4 Tc II. Throw the focus limiter and focus is even faster.
Just purchased a 300mm f4 ED AF for $365 from eBay in mint.
I got one for approx $250 in South Africa but it didn't have the case. Great lens!
as usual very entertaining and helpful. That new PF is the lense for me, all day long.
BTW I suggest you get a bigger table, because your lense might fall off
Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR F/4D IF-ED is running around $1400. B&H is back ordered. Wouldn't the 200-500 offer more flexibility and VR? I have a 1.7x tele. I bought it with my 70-200mm. I thought it was a compromise between magnification and light loss.
just got my 300mm f4 (ED AF)...although it has internal fungus , but still produces outstanding pictures, focus ring? ohhhhh EMMMM GGGGGEEEEEEE !
No VR doesn’t means no low light photos, it’s just mean you need to stabilise the lens to avoid shakes rather than using shutter speed to avoid it, which indeed related to light
Watching this while responding to your comment on the Z6 II video... Informative. 300mm not my normal stomping ground.
Thanks for the vid! Your timing is great, i was also about to bug you about this topic. I just got the 1st lens mentioned in this vid and im trying to compare it against the 70-300 VR. I was disheartened about it at first, but then i realized the focus was off. Manual focus brings out its strengths. I do have alot of chromatic abberation, and im not entirely sure which Fstop is the sharpest, but we havent had a good sunny day for weeks so hopefully better lighting will help.
Just got the 300mm D version off Adorama Very good condition $309
Love your videos, thanks
I just ordered Nikon Nikkor AF 300mm F/4 ED IF Telephoto lens From JAPAN and was wondering if this is a better birding lens the 80-400. I appreciate all your info on all of these products.
Hello, Are you pleased with the auto focus of 300 ED IF ? For birds?
Any prime lens is better than a zoom. Use a DX and get 450mm effective.
Love your videos !
If fellow togs are happy using manual focus a 300mm f2.8 can be picked up at silly prices from Tamron, Tokina or even Nikon along with a cheap adapter and focus peaking on mirrorless bodies these older MF lenses have a new lease of life and are ideal if your shooting from a hide.
+Ken. As a result of your review I bought a D500 some time ago, along with a Nikkor 300mm PF VR + 1.4 TC III. As far as I'm concerned it is a supelative combination. I doubt you will be disappointed when you try yours out.
i have the 300mm PF now :)
Sorry, I meant you will not be disappointed with the performance of the (1.4 TC + 300mm) + D500.
Do you do many actual reviews? Or your opinion/experience. Id like if you showed comparison. Time issue msybe?
I am considering buying the Ed 4.5 one for astrophotography (on a telescope mount, to compensate earth rotation). I already have an old 200mm q auto f/4, but unfortunately it doesn't mount on my d7000 (but it fits right on my little 3100), I made some good astrophoto shots with this 200mm. as I don't have a lot of money to spend, would the 300mm f/4.5 be a good choice ?
excuse my poor english, french are not good in english, but here in France, the s in Fresnel is not pronounced, and Augustin Fresnel was french, so I think the right pronounciation is frénel, mais c'est pas important... ;)
I have one of the older ai 4.5 lenses, its..meh, good points but soft- how much better is the last 1 finger version you show here? Thanks
elevensixty You can get really creative with that lens though. I have a superlative specimen, really sharp for what it is. I love how it renders.
legend brother I have my archers cert on the range good sport to get into
Ken Today January of 2018 Interested in buying the 300mm f/4 D but not sure If the problem you referred about problems with autofocus motor failure ...Do you have any Info If the NEW models have been fixed? If so I'd buy a brand new one. Please let me know? Thank you.
the AF-S F4 has common motor failure :)
that IS the new model :)
NOT the really expensive PF f4, that ones fine
Theoria Apophasis Sorry for my question not been quite right.I meant to ask if this model say if they were made recently say manufactured late 2017 would Nikon have addressed and fix this problem? I really want to buy this f4 D For its attributes but it needs to have a good auto focus for my needs...Thank you for your patiance and would love to hear your reply as Im waiting for your thoughts before i put an order for it.
Would the 300 af be fast enough for motorsports?
Is your shutterspeed? 😅 ISO 200 500th @5.6
I just purchased the AF NIKKOR 300mm f/4 ED. What a beauty! I am mounting it on a Nikon D7100 (also, newly acquired). I have added it to my Non CPU lens menu. Now... Can you please tell me all the do's and don'ts? I see that the aperture setting on the lens itself, has a locking button-type mechanism (?) on it. I have looked, and looked, and I cannot find a user's manual on the interwebs. Helllllllp! Please. Thank you!!!
This is a late reply, but mounting that AF 300mm f/4 ED on D7100 doesnt require you to input non CPU lens menu. Unless of course you want to operate the aperture solely using the aperture ring. If you want to operate it using dials on the D7100, you can put the aperture on the biggest number and lock it so it doesnt turn. That way, you can operate the aperture using D7100 front dial like any other lens
Is the MF still the best version of the 300mm f4.0 (4.5) as far as micro-contrast and image quality are concerned?
My intention is to use a 300mm with a D90 for sniping candid still and video in daylight, taking advantage the manual features and compression.
I’d sometimes want a sniping lens for Argentine Tango, which is commonly a low light action situational I suppose I should be considering an f/2.8.
Could you put a list of the lenses in the description so we can all see their full names?
Can you mount that 300mm f4.5 on a fuji ? I know its possible but ... is it good ?
thats ONE lens i havent tested actually on it
I use it on my X-H1 & love it!
Are these lenses weather resistent?
Can someone please tell me if the 300mm AF ED (3:00) can be used with manual focus with an adapter? I've read that to used manual focus, both the lens af/mf switch needs to be on mf, and the body also needs to be set to manual. Is this relevant if adapted using a dumb/non electronic adapter?
You have to use the A/M switch of the lens then. Otherwise, the focus ring would have no function. The weird behaviour, that you also have to switch the Nikon body to manual focus, is unique to this lens and the AF 180/2.8. Other AF lenses from that screwdriver era have either an always rotating focus ring (then only the camera has to be switched on M), or a M/A ring like the AF 60/2.8 macro or AF 85/1.4 (then only the lens has to be switched on M). Confusing? Yes, but not, when adapting them on mirrorless.
I have a pentacon 300 old school for my IR tank sight
now thats a rare lens :/
Dresden- built quality.
the oldest lens 300mm is it manual focuse only?because its working only on manual mode in my camera! what about autofocuse?sorry my english not good
Heya Angry ... hope not too off topic... but at the broke price range, is this a good 300mm ? Nikon NIKKOR-P Auto 300mm f4.5 Nippon Kogaku Lens
I don't like the 300mm f4 ED AFS (non vr) all that much. The 70-300 vr is better as the VR compensates for the loss of light and I'd say is as good optically at 300mm and costs less than half. The only downside you have is that yoi can't use a teleconverter with it.
true , however the 70 300 renders nowhere near as good
the 300mm f4 af-s is 10x sharper than the 70-300mm.. you trippin.
Ken, I wanted to ask about the following two lenses:
300mm f4 AIS ED IF
300mm f4 AF D ED IF - with the slow auto focus (not AFS)
Does the manual focus on both feel the same - smooth and easy?
Do you think that I will have higher hit rate on flying birds with the slow AFD, compared to 300mm f4.5 (with the harder manual focus)?
I too, was wondering about focusing speed on the af-D
It's actually pretty snappy but noisy with a D750. Even compared to the 300mm f4 af-s. But the more modern af-s is just sharper with zero aberrations wide open. Just hope the motor holds out.
NIKKOR 300mm f/4 D ED-IF AF-S now July 2017 If I buy it brand new do you think Nikon fixed the issue you've mentioned about breaking down propensity of the Auto focus motor?
Nop.He said in another video that Nikon has no spare parts for repairing its outdated lenses. Also he siad that they knew that if they work on old lenses, they might get them broken!
Hello Friend!
Question. I’ll keep it simple.
I’m taking photos of dogs in stationary and dynamic situations. I have a Nikon D3400 need a 300m lens for further photographs.
Pictures for website and instagram for business. Nothing to special.
What kind!?!?
you didnt ask a question :/
You didn't say anything about the 300 4.5 lens. I bet I know why. I purchased this lens a few months ago. It is a poor lens. I would give it to someone, if they really wanted to play around with it.
Do you know if the 300mm f/4E PF has a ring-type AF motor or micro-motor? How can you tell the difference without disassembly?
300mm PF Ultrasonic AF Motor (Ring-USM)
bye bye 300mm i got my new 200-500! and its fooooking amazing
is the 200-500 as sharp as the 300mm af-s?
@@gasbike100mpg Of course not :). Even with 1.7 TC in 510mm the 300mm AF-S is sharper than 200-500mm!
@@kirostar12 good to know. My comment was years ago, and since i acquired the 300mm af-s, it is sharp!
@@gasbike100mpg Yes. Even now with the new 300mm PF lens, the 300mm F4 AF-S is better than the new PF lens. The old 300mm is heavier but with 1.7 TC in 510mm and the new 300mm PF without any, teleconverter they got the same sharpness. That's why many people realize the bad move they make buying the new PF lens. The only advantage of the new 300mm PF is the weight. Nikon never made sharper glass in that price range. It is sharper with 1.4 x and 1.7x TC even than the Canon 400mm F5.6 Prime witch is one of the sharpest primes Canon ever made. Now is the moment to buy this incredible 300mm AF-S lens when everybody selling it and buying the terrible 300mm PF. You can buy used one in excellent condition for about $600. I recommend buying used 17 E II TC for about $160 and you don't need noting else for wildlife photography.
@@kirostar12 thanks for the info. I bought my 300mm af-s for 600 2 years ago. it is in excellent condition. what is your opinion on the older 500mm or 600mm prime lenses, such as the ones made in the 70's and 80's. like this one www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/600f56.htm or the Nikon 500mm ED F4 P.
Why bother using a 1.4X teleconverter on a FF body, when you can just stick the bloody thing on a good DX body and get a 1.5X equivalent with no extra light distorting glass being added.
You use teleconverters for two reasons, you cannot fully frame your subject adequately at the long end nor at minimum focus distance.
The only time it makes sense to use a teleconverter is if you have a high MP FF sensor which creates a factor on its own.
e.g. 24MP DX is 1.5X crop 2.25 area factor. A 36MP FF (D800/D810) has a density factor of 1.5X area (1.22 crop factor equivalent) over a 24MP FF (D750/600/610). A 1.4X teleconverter on a D800 is equivalent to a 1.7X on a D610 and a 1.13X tele on a 24MP DX sensor.
On a D850 the 1.4X is equivalent to a 1.9X tele on a D750 and a 1.26X tele on a 24MP DX sensor. A 1.4X tele combined with a 1.5X crop sensor gives you a 2.1X equivalent.
What trickery is this you might wonder, hardly anyone bothers with pixel density equivalency calculations and just treats everything by sensor size only. Given that a good DX sensor body can cost the same or less than a quality teleconverter, pooh pooing a DX sensor but oking a teleconverter just shows ignorance by saying a crop is only a crop when it most definitely isn't just a crop when factoring in pixel density.
The reach gained by teleconverters has the same calculable effect as a higher density DX sensor with the added disadvantage of extra glass distortion that is inherent with the tele, but totally absent when using a crop sensor to achieve the same.
OK Ken I need your help mate. I'm looking at either a 300mm prime or something like an 20-400 mm zoom. It's to fit an Nikon D-7200 and I need AF for motorsports photography. Touring car racing, bikes etc. Budget is about £600UK. Please help mate as I trust your advice totally. Cheers...Baz.
Barry Jones I bought the first 18 300 Nikon for 700 bucks it has VR and I have shot 300,000 pictures on my Nikon 7100 It's Fabulous check out that lens with the crop feature looses half the pixels but still looks good at 15 so check that lens out I love it 18 to 300 I shoot Wild life Surfers people sunsets it's Great
Get one 18 to 300 Nikon VR works great on my D 7100 300,000 shots and still going!!
and not one word about comparing their IQ?
Well the f4.5 if has shot up in price hasnt it lol jesus $300 bucks now lol
the table is so small and not balance on the ground
So Ken, I'm thinking about renting the lightweight PF lens and a TC for traveling to Galapagos and Ecuador. Good idea? Will gladly send a gratuity your way.
the 300mm f4 PF? thats an awesome travel choice :):
Wow, thank you for the quick response. I wasn't sure because I heard you say in another vid that you did not like the fresnel much, but thought it might be ok since I'm just renting it and hope to get some decent shots of the fabulous wildlife there. Sending you greetings, Merry Xmas, and a little something to show my appreciation. :-)
i own the lens myself....i just said its not idea for portraiture or rendering ..... its great for sports action wildlife etc. :)
i meant to say not IDEAL for......OMG Rachel!!!! How come you sent me that???? GIve you big hug from the tattooed nut!!! Youre sooooo kind!!! That helps so much.....Youre awesome ! OMG,....wanna call me and pick my brain on anything? email me and ill drop you my phone .....anything i can do to help? :)
oh, ok thanks for clarifying .....sorry, I'm sure you did say that.
That 300mm ed if with the gold ring is now $700
can't even find one right now that isn't super beat up.
I bought one this year in mint condition £150 from Japan 😎
Oddly you say the 300mm ed-if is the best 300 f4 and then you say the 300mm f4.5 is the best... which is the best for portraits?
Fresnel was French, and in French the "s" is silent, so it is pronounced "Frenel" :-)
both are correct actually and nikons OWN website videos say FRESSNEHL
When I attended the Pennsylvania College of Optometry the professors made it absolutely clear that they would FAIL us mercilessly if we ever pronounced the “S” in the word Fresnel. Just because some people say it doesn’t make it right. “If you like your healthcare plan you can keep it” has been proven absolutely wrong. This is nothing like the popular “potato vs ‘pawtato’” pronunciation issue. Pronouncing the “s” in Fresnel to an Optometrist or Optical Engineer makes them realize you are an uneducated moron with zero credibility.
Doh... I missed the live feed.
ohhh robert, i didnt sleep for days, i feel about half dead…..i feel ill and tired, adn my neck hurts :(
JAPAN JAPAN JAPAN....CHAIII NAHHHH! LOL
A mass damping lens! Yikes! ;)
So which is which for again ? proof it please.
Can we use Nikon 300 mm f/4 with 1.4xTC II ?
WHICH 300mm f4....there are 5 diff ones that were made. :(
The latest version 300mm f/4 PF lens.
I am thinking of getting 80-400 VR G lens or 300mm f/4 PF lens.
don't tell anyone i got it for dirt cheap !
