What we know about the vehicle explosion near Palmdale that killed an LA County firefighter

- L.A. County Fire Department crews responded around 2 p.m. to the quarry in the 7300 block of Pearblossom Highway in Littlerock, just southeast of Palmdale, to reports of a burning vehicle.
County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said a short time after crews arrived, perhaps around 2:10 p.m., an explosion occurred, killing Andrew Pontious, a 19-year veteran firefighter. READ MORE: abc7.com/post/...
These processions always go straight through my heart. As a first responder’s wife, there is no pain like this. Thank you for your sacrifice. So sorry for all his loved ones🙏🏻💔

He probably was close to the tire and when it blew he was thrown back onto those concrete blocks. My guess cause those tires blow big time especially when on fire
My thoughts exactly. If I’m not mistaken those tires have a large heavy metal ring that helps secure them to the rim also. That could have been the culprit.
Tire blowing up was my guess. Terrible news.
There was a video on a channel called Virtual Railfan where a wheel loader very similar to this one was travelling down the streets of Revelstoke BC when it's tire blew. You could see the shockwave from it, and it rattled the livestream camera pretty good too which was about 400ft away from it.
my thought is the same ..😧
I was trying to figure out what on a front end loader could possibly explode. Now that you brought up "tire" it seems obvious. Thanks.
My deepest condolences to this firefighters, family, friends and brothers/sisters of fire family. ❤️🔥🚒🚒🚒🚒🚒
That is the saddest news I've heard today
RIP 🪦
Since loaders are generally diesel (unless it was CNG), and diesel generally doesn’t explode, did one of the tires blow?
This is so very sad, Thank You for your 19 yrs of service....My deepest condolences to the family and friends of this fallen fire fighter......
This sucks! Thank you for your service and condolences to your family and friends.
My condolences to the family…

Tire........and a lack of maintenance on the machine.
Heavy equipment tires are very dangerous in a fire. I feel for his family
I thought maybe it was fueled by propane. A tire makes sense. 😢
Split ring wheel construction? I agree that the tire probably went over pressure from the heat, the amount of stored energy in a tire that large and strong is incredible.
maintenance has nothing to do with it.
@@gary770se Old cracked hydraulic hoses can fail, spraying fluid on hot exhaust.
His poor family
If I had to guess. Being a heavy equipment operator the tire probably let go and when those big tires let go it will kill you. Those quarry loaders are massive and the tires are massive
I agree, you can see the tire is flat
@@tobettingdan4312 I also agree, first thing I thought too.
I ran Back Hoe`s, Road Readers, Dump Trucks. There is a tremendous amount of explosive power in a tire.
News media cracks me up when they sensationlise a story, it`s about ratings.
Too bad some died because of the fire, a tragic event.

Probably just the pressure from the tire . Those hold so much air !

Ill tell you exactly what happened. The engine caught on fire from a oil or fuel leak. Then they called the fire dept. to put it out. He was too close to it trying to put out the fire and that rear tire exploded killing him. There is really nothing else on that loader that could explode like that.
You are correct. I don't work for LA County, but I was told by someone at my station that works closely with them that is what killed him. The tire exploded.
Truly a tragedy. I'm only 49 seconds in, and the one question I wish they would answer is, how many years had he been a firefighter?
My condolences to the family 😢. May his soul rest in peace, thank you for your service 🙏🏼. So sad 😞
Most likely the tire got hot & the air inside expanded rapidly & exploded! This why we are supposed to approach all burning vehicles at an angle instead of a full frontal approach! May God bless this firefighters family and his fellow firefighter family! John 15;13 Greater love has no man but that he lay down his life for his friends.

Update training. Don't approach hot tires from the side.
So sad 😞 , why they came to close to truck.
Their job is to stop fires from growing and spreading. No way to know there was explosive materials ready to blow. There will be serious investigations going on until they can understand what happened
.We don’t question the victims of tragedy on the job. full stop. We question who started the fire, and WHY there was an explosion. Never victim blame.
Does Sam come up with the titles? I always enjoy the videos!
Saddening news for a firefighter who lost his life in Littlerock.🙏🙏😔😔 And keep on prayers going for the man and beyond his will to his life.🙌🏻🙏😔❤️
Rest in peace 🙏 Gob bless his family. Thank you for your service.
New safety standards will be learned hopefully. That thing could have burned for 8 weeks without lighting anything else in that area.
God Bless You Brother.
RIP Sir
Hoping someone with the necessary expertise and technical resources will be involved in the investigation. Condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the fallen firefighter.
All they have to do is read the RUclips comment section and they will get the answers.
Rest in peace.
Wow so sad!
My condolences to friends and family, with any burning vehicle, if there is no one in side you need to backup and worry about your own safety. The vehicle is insured and can be rebuilt as we are not. Soak it from a safe distance and if you can’t…. Let it burn. No harm no fowl. Please be safe folks and once again hats off to this dedicated man.
Did he get tangled in the overhead electrical cables, starting the fire that caused the tire to explode?
They don't know, hence the investigation.
@@michaelperkins739 I was stating the obvious...sorry.

How awful!!!!
Not much explodes on vehicles that can kill. People mistake tires popping for explosions. Plus it must have been bad since they didn’t work him or immediately transport to a trauma center. Rest easy brother, we got it from here.
Giant Tire exploded and poor fella got bopped on the head...nobody gonna say it but the veteran didnt prioritize safety... He trained for this
That was rude, no one expected a front loader to explode that way. It was a freak accident
U R A FOOL👍
Where did you get that information? This reporter says that they don't know what exploded?
@@naomisgram1they haven't determined what exploded yet. Tires are dangerous in a vehicle fire, we were taught to never position yourself near one.
Was in the area delivering and the workers there told me all about it... they even showed me videos of the poor dude laid out, right after it happened 😮 @@jturtle5318
The tire probably exploded, causing the tire ring to fly off and hit the fire fighter
Did they think it was time to do an interior attack on the front loader? This death is completely on the scene commander and no one else. People can say it's a learning moment but I know for sure they teach that tires can explode in the fire academy, this death was needless.
sue the company for poor maintenance they are responsible!!!!........ I don't know the company didn't try and put it out themselves there's nothing around it what was the rush??
Maybe the front loader had magnesium in it so when he hit it with water it exploded
But was it an EV front loader??? Why was it burning for so long?
probably from emission system
So what caused the explosion 💥 somebody caused that explosion 💥
Nuthin...... this report shows you have nuthin to add.
Propane explosion?
By the time the fire department shows up it over let it burn it's too dangerous stay away 🙄 water on a fire like that 🤔 Do they have training by OSHA 🧐 So much wrong doing PRAYERS FOR THE FAMILY OF THIS GREAT FIREFIGHTER WHO IM SURE SAVED MORE THAN HIS OWN LIVES GOD R.I.P. 🙏

If the loader was powered by DIESAL it could have a ... B.L.E.V.E. explosion if powered be C.N.G. it would be a compressed natural gas explosion...
Instead of DIESAL 😂 it was in fact hot pressurized air… from the big ass tire cooking
