Really cool that you let the boy dig the second hole. If that was me at his age, my dad would have gotten frustrated after 10 minutes and just taken over.
Very nice! BTW, if you have wifi at the gate (from your house) you can add a Wemo Maker (by Belkin) so that you can open the gate from your phone; regardless of whether you're in the house, at the gate or half way around the world. I've done this for mine and works great! You can still keep keypad and/or clicker so that you have multiple means by which to open the gate. Again, looks great!
JLM_Texas.....thanks for the info regarding the wemo maker.....my gate is 20 meters away with no wifi at the gate.....any other option to still use this device? Wired? Also looking for something which provides some sort of video output? Thanks
I looked for videos like this because I have a project like this coming up. Nice job, nice place and nice family. Your son's determination was most impressive. Good job young man!
Remember working with my dad when I was 9 years old keep that young boy moving make sure he loves to be outside one day he could be a landscape architect
Great video! Just the kind of setup we need for our country driveway to stop the snoops who ignore the no trespassing signs and security cameras. Definitely a project for this fall. Would it be possible to rent Eli for a couple days? Great kid! You are very blessed!
Yeah a gate is apparently required for people who don't know how to respect others' personal property, which is still mind blowing to me. I have a chain locked between to 4x4 posts as a temporary gate for now until I can set up something more substantial
That kid will grow up to be a fine man. Work ethic of my generation :) Must come from great parenting. I loved the great Dane casually strolling around :)
The manufacturer of the opener specifically states not to use wheels of any kind on the gates for some reason. Assuming it is due to undue stress if used on not perfectly level ground.
I don’t use 16 foot gates on the farm, only 12 foot. There’s too much leverage on the post. Your post will start to lean because there’s too little in the ground also. You won’t be happy with the screw in hinges. The bolt through style with a nut on each side of the post are much better for adjusting the gate.
Great job except the 75% discount on the opener is what's making this look so good. And that discount rarely occurs. Regular price is the cost of this entire project.
Just 4 years later and the price of Mighty Mule openers at Home Depot now start at $260 (for light duty) and go up from there. That's $200 more than your materials cost list at 5:40 in your video.
Home depot and everywhere else had the Mighty Mulr opener at $300 and a round $700 with the rest of the stuff. How are you finding it $62 or even $200??
Nice work I wish you show us how did you installed the might mule motor to see more detail will be grate. Some people they ask for too much money to build gate like that . thank you
Not bad! I am looking into fencing in the back yard portion of our property and will be parking the cars behind the house and will need a gate like this. I just wish I could find help like what you had for digging the holes! Unfortunately, not many kids these days are willing to do that kind of thing anymore!
This is pretty cool. Legit question though, not criticizing, legitimately asking: What's to stop someone from lifting it off the hinges? And what's to stop someone from just driving through, is the only thing keeping it closed the hydraulic arm on the opener?
@@davebrown3212 it just closes. A vehicle could easily drive thru gate but if someone's wants in bad enough, they'll get in. More so as a deterrent to prevent vehicle access. You can buy a magnetic gate latch but I've heard they can be pushed open fairly easily as well and they are a little pricey ($100 or so). That may be a good option if you have dogs and don't want them to be able to nudge their way out. Edit: my opener is still working great, thank God. Used a few times each day. Same marine battery from rural king and same small solar panel.
this is great, id like to install a similar gate. can you tell me, after time did the hinges on the post warp or sag because of the weight from the gate?
Nicely done ✅. Where did you buy electric line stick for the posts? I guess you don’t listed in the cost? Or did you find it on the side of the road 🤣😎🤙
Anyone knows you always double check that it’s level. I would rather check 100 times and have it perfect instead of having a gate that is not level since he set it in concrete
Great video! Now here’s the bad side. For some reason people will actually sit in the gates closing path. This will damage that gate. 2nd. Add the locking latch. Eventually wind or people (delivery drivers or walk through) pushing on the gate will drive the motor out of “time”. 3rd pest control. Ants and other bugs will nest on those electrical components. I see this is a solar setup. I ran a hard line to power the gate and added lamp posts. In reality I’d say I’ve got over 1k in my setup using mighty mule opener. Here’s the good. As long as the gate is treated good and not abused it’ll last long a long time. These are a few things to consider. Had mine for just over 5 years. Great video 2 thumbs up
I just went to the lawn and garden area at Walmart and found the cheapest battery made for a riding lawnmower and it has more than enough capacity to cycle the gate more times per day than it will ever be used
Please tell your son the internet has concluded that his work ethic is most impressive. 👍

So how is the mighty mule holding up? Any updates to the project? What you lik, what you would do differently, etc? Thank you.
Everything looks great I wouldn’t change a thing but I would add a wheel at end of the gate to keep it from sagging.
T Hammer Maybe could have offset the hinges a bit to account for the play in the system, but with something that big the sag is always an issue

Good thing you got that gate up when you did...that black and white horse was about to escape!
I'd add wheels to the other end of the gate which will help it open and take uneeded forces off the opener
