This is actually pretty accurate, there is one thing he missed which is how open worlds are split up into chunks so if you go into one part of the map, it will auto load the adjacent tiles in the background. And what he said about procedural stuff is true, we have basically gotten to the point where you can paint a grassy patch and have it automatically populate with plants and then if you don't like how its placed you paint it out and manually add in what you want. Procedural generation helps you with the broad strokes and then you cull or add details until it looks how you want.

Industrial Fan Set to Low people dislike it because it had almost nothing to do with assassins creed, at least Origins was the beginning of the assassins and set up a new modern day protagonist. I would say only the first act was good while the other parts of the game were just boring, they did a good job on the world but it has nothing really interesting to do in it. Odyssey would have been fine if it was a separate property of Ubisoft but with some borrowed mechanics from AC, kind of like how Skulls and Bones is gonna be a pirate game that uses Black Flag’s mechanics.

@B13Helghast I actually really enjoy the combat system in Origins and Odyssey. I mainly bought them because of the change of combat. I have played almost every AC game out and the same old combat was wearing thin for me, especially in games like Syndicate. I could fight off 5 guys with probably less than 20 button presses, it felt more like I was watching the fight than actually fighting. The new system requires more active participation, like an easier Witcher 3 combat.

Complaining about a corporation trying too hard to make money is like complaining about a chef trying too hard to cook food or a janitor trying too hard to make things clean.

@@himynameis2739 yea you're right. A businesse's main goal is to make money. You know what else is their job? To provide quality products to their customers. Give half assed effort only because "corporations literally exist solely to make money" and your competition will leave you in the dust. A clothing company fails to provide comfortable clothing? Bankrupt. A restaurant can't serve good food and service? Shut down. A game studio isn't able to deliver a good quality game that people will enjoy? Gone. Nobody is complaining about companies trying to make money. We know that's their job. We're not idiots. We complain because we're sick and tired of them treating us like fucking pawns. Take EA for example. The Sims base game is $40. The base game alone. Which you would think would be packed and loaded with content since you're forking over $40 of your own money. Nope. Want to have a job? $40 Want to go to the city? $40 Wanna have seasons? $40. Want to have a fucking pet? Forty. Fucking dollars. All of this, logically, should be in a base game alone for $40. So don't sit there and tell me ”corporations literally exist solely to make money" when a video game company, a company whose job is to create video games, sells you 1% of a game at launch and tells you to pump an extra 200 fucking dollars into a game if you want the complete version. Fuck off.

@@poptarttss AC: Odyssey sold 1.4 million in it's first week and has sold at least 4.5 million on consoles alone. Not sure of PC sales.
The base game alone of the Sims 4 has sold 10 million+ not including the DLC pack sales.
While your premise is accurate, that bad products lead to bad sales which leads to failure. It would seem that statistically these products are not seen as bad enough to fail, they're selling great.
As long as they keep making money then saying they're bad games doesn't matter to the companies. What matters is how much people buy, people are buying both AC:Odyssey stuff and Sims stuff like crazy.
Are the practises kinda scummy? Sure, but they work, if people didn't buy, it wouldn't happen. But they do.
So your outrage and the outrage of others I see saying these things is obviously the minority, if it were the majority then people wouldn't pay and they'd stop doing it. Money talks more than internet comments.

These were NOT the answer I were looking for when I came here. I am an indie dev myself and even I wander about how it's created. What was shown off here is how they can be generated. . . which is a different topic entirely. I was looking for the more technical side of things that come from hardware limitations. You have SOOOOO much stuff in an open world, lots of moving parts and high textures.
What I was looking for was how they "fake it". Render distance is a thing and so is pop-in. I want to know how THOSE things work where areas of the map "load in" as you move around. This is easy to fake in a linear game where you just block their path with a doorway or a loading screen, but an open world doesnt give you that but at the same time. . . you can't just load the entire map in all at once, that would just be too much to process and would leave you with less than 1 FPS. That much is WAY more important of dealing with Asset Load-in and Hiding the Load-In rather than just Asset Creation or Asset Generation.
Perhaps we can have a follow-up video for this very topic?

The upcoming Flight Simulator game features the entire world in a 1 to 1 scale. Using height and colour data from satellites, the base mesh of the world is generated, then they use algorithms to detect buildings, trees, roads, bridges, etc. so then those all get rendered in 3D. That's all used as a base, so then artists can go in and fix things up, add details etc. And yes, you can find your own house, probably even land your plane on the road and park in the driveway.
Honestly, even though it's just a flight simulator, it's turning out to be a highly impressive technological advancement in games.

It would have been cool if you went in to more specifics rather than just general concepts. For example, how do they indirectly guide the player to places of interest? How do they go about transitioning from one kind of environment to another? How do they go about deciding the size of the world depending on movement speed? What kind of things have developers left out of a world due to technical constraints? What kind of tricks do they use to keep players out of places they shouldn't go to until later in the game? How do they go about designing missions with multiple entry points, and account for various ways to complete a mission? How much realism do developers consider when making an open world? How do go about making alterations to the world depending decisions the player has made? How much time is typically spent building the world? Do developers build the world first and then the missions after, or at the same time? Are levels built first and then they find ways to connect them later? There are so many interesting things I'd love to know about open worlds. This video basically just summarised the far cry editors.

As it also just so happens I'm in the middle of playing Assassins Creed Odyssey and I have been wondering since I started about 80 hours ago how the hell they pulled off such a massive, detailed world. I assumed a lot of the nature sections between cities, etc was procedurally generated but I wasn't sure.
After playing every Far Cry game from 3 on and now Assassin's Creed I can say that Ubisoft is VERY impressive with the worlds they create for their games. Just amazing work and it's the kind of amazing work that makes someone like me want to explore every single inch of the map to see all the crazy things they've got hidden away. To me, exploring the map is just as fun as completing the missions.

Every mountain in the world is there for a specific set of reasons, every forest is there for their own reasons. Finding a world in a game with absolutely no relation between the different ecosystems feels so jarring to me XD though if we're being honest, it's something few will know to recognize, and something that would take a long time for a proc gen system to be trained to respect

And would also be a example of a game that went full handcrafted dispite the extra world while also being considerably bigger than any other handcrafted world outthere as of now. Planet Mira surrealist out of this world design like its excentric rock formations and peculiar flora could only be achieved by pure artitic view and hand designing (as of now), creating a world that is basically the most beautiful created in a game, easily overshadowing Horizon Zero Down, Skyrim, Witcher 3 and even Zelda BOTW of the on both look and dimension.

The next generation of open world games should incorporate substantial, dynamic changes to the world depending on what players do. This doesn't just mean geometric destruction from combat. This means worlds where the NPC systems (politics, economy, resources, etc.) change in relation to players' actions. The world should always be going on around the player, but when the player engages in a major actions that disrupt the world, the world should respond to those actions, positively or negatively. Some games already do this e.g. The Division 2, with the Control Points constantly being fought over by in-game factions. Extending greater world simulation to open worlds is the next evolution because it helps immersion and can help minimize repetitive tasks, too.

Its better done by mmos when their lore supports it, like black desert, single players? Not so much, specially with short deadlines and tech moving faster, if a game that does that must be sure the competition cant put out something that will make their game look dated, one reason people should have some salt to Star Citizen, even eve has more potential even if it's infested with roleplayers that have God complex.
