They have always had their own approach to playing. It has always been an acquired taste with me but they keep the pocket VERY well and that's the first job of a percussion section. Also, their balance is very good too.
@@jessewilcoxjr.533 So you're saying FAMU should stay in the stands because their strong pocket isn't enough to cut it. Interesting. Because you seemed to be saying that they were the better line on the other thread.
Love FAMU's line but I just wish their snares had that high-pitched, tight sound that other schools like NSU, cookman, etc.. have. I know they won't because of tradition, but still lol.

Critique: After some time here's my critique. Someone said it best. Neither drumline put on a "show." This was more of a showcase than a battle. Surprisingly to some, based on my first response, I would actually say that FAMU put on the better SHOW that was appealing to the audience. JSU played a "standstill." If you have a feature the best thing is not to appeal to percussionists but the lay crowd. As a percussionist I want chops, complication and all the intricacies connected to our craft. But I'm also aware enough to realize that the crowd just wants to be entertained. Here's my breakdown: Jackson State- Having studied this drumline for about a decade, I know this cadence very well. Nothing basic about it. Well composed with intricate parts. Well payed. The only issue: It's a stand still. The typical person will lose interest very quickly. The cadences were actually more complicated than FAMU's so I give the nod to technicality. They were very clean. Very visually appealing. This can rub people the wrong way because if this is all you have to go by you'll say "Jackson State only plays basic things." If you were to look at the sheet music of their cadences (which they have contrary to what many think) and pay attention to their sticking and rudiments it is VERY advanced. In fact, I haven't heard any of their alumni say this, but it's almost as though they write very difficult things so that people won't be able to look at it and figure it out. And if they try to sight read it they will stumble and fail miserably. I like that level of mind games. FAMU- Pocket was VERY good and the balance was IMPECCABLE. FAMU's style is an acquired taste, IMO but they do what they do very well. I've also studied this line and spoken to members over the years. I attended their summer band camp as a high schooler so i have an understanding about their approach to playing. The material was not as complicated and there were moments of "mud" in the snares than JSU. I have to personally take off marks for that. However, the balance of sound among all the sections was top notch. Cymbals kept time very well. They did stand still as well but had more crowd pleasing attributes to their performance. I don't know if there was a winner or not but if there was like someone said I can say that I DO see why FAMU won. As a percussionist I would have given the win to JSU. If a common person were judging FAMU was more appealing to them. Conclusion: I favor Jackson State. That doesn't mean that I don't believe FAMU has nothing to offer the percussion community. At the end of the day I was glad to see both schools put on a show and both had their strong points. What I'd like to see:Both schools could do more movement. Someone said JSU could have done a funk train and that was a great suggestion. JSU could have done a cadence medley (like FAMU did). But I got to watch two drumlines play.
