  • HAS EVO STRAYED TOO FAR FROM BEING A TOURNAMENT?
Some people (most of whom don't attend Evo anymore) have criticized Evo for becoming too much of a convention as opposed to being a tournament as it used to be. James weighs in on this, and talks about why Evo continues to... well... evolve!

As I’ve discussed, I think people who think Evo is raking in the cash hand over fist are wildly mistaken. If you’re just referring to the developers to advertise their games for you to buy, well… yeah. But Evo isn’t the cash cow you’d like to think it is. I said this on stream, but if Evo was some money bonanza, you’d think Sony wouldn’t invest even MORE money into Evo in their second year? But it definitely felt like similar funding as last year. You have to realize how companies think, and that’s the part that drives me nuts. It’s why I tell that “Internet cost” story, to illustrate how people just don’t seem to grasp the costs and expenses that an event like Evo takes on. Is it weird to imagine an event like Evo costs them a few millions of dollars to run?

Evo is definitely a convention now, and I'm having a hard time seeing that as a bad thing!
It's not like the tournaments don't still take place or aren't the focus of that convention.

I'm glad that EVO has morphed into a huge convention because it gives me more reason to attend since traveling Vegas is expensive. It's also great to see that convention experience stretched to three days to give people more things to do compared to years past. Hopefully they improve on the arena experience and address the issues people had for next year.

People will literally complain about anything nowadays even if it’s not an issue at all lol this was my second EVO (first one was 2017 just for the finals on Sunday) and the first time I was there all 3 days and signed up to participate in the tournament, SF6 and T8, and it was awesome! All 3 days were great meeting a ton of cool people, making friends, and checking out all the booths and merch! It was great that all the developers showed up and let you play the new games coming out soon and giving out free stuff. It being a convention is not a bad thing at all and besides the main focus were all the tournaments anyways! Honestly Sunday was unexpected with how crazy the line got but I’m confident they’ll figure it out for next year 😁

If EVO is the Super Bowl of fighting games, it needs to be more than just a tournament. Super Bowl, Wrestlemania take over the whole city for a week for one night. If this is what EVO is, is absolutely has to be more than just a tournament.
I loved the arcade and it was legitimately bigger than any arcade I've been to in my life and I grew up in the 90's arcade boom. I took a walk around video of that whole section and just walking up and down those aisles took me 10 minutes and there was a few rows that I didn't even get to.
I went to EVO in Mandalay in 2017 and 2018 I think and I enjoyed the the booths and all that back then but everything was 100 times better this time.
I only went day two but I loved being able to walk in to the main stage and watch the top 6 of some games and check out a few matches. I didn't even know what games and times were going to be on the main stage and just happened to walk in right as the 3rd strike top 6 was beginning and I figured I might as well catch a few matches.
I almost left before "EVO Moment 38" because it was already past 10pm and was getting kind of late but Hayao was so good at entertaining the crowd that I figured I might as well stay to watch him. As the 3rd Strike tournament was going, The top 24s or whatever were starting to wrap up right outside the main stage entrance and as those were ending, the people were filing in to the mainstage and by the time Hayao made his moment, the main stage arena was probably at about 85% full but the crowd was so hype when that moment happened!
Never been a part of anything like that for fighting games and i was just like "holy shit!" I remember some random guy teaching me how to do a Sonic Boom while I played Street Fighter II for the first time at Classic Bowl when I was 8 years old to seeing probably 4000-5000 people losing their shit to a guy playing a game that's already 25 years old!
"Fighting game is something so great!

I don't think Evo is *more* or too much of a con because it's still the biggest tournament of the year for every game. It's this huge celebration of FGC and the con aspect I actually find great because it makes it more accessible to bring people who otherwise aren't part of the FGC to see it and they don't need the tournament as part of their attendance. They can be a cosplayer, they can want to browse merch, they can want to try games for free, and also like at the end of the day, people need to understand that casuals are part of the FGC. There are tons of 0-2ers that make up for huge portions of brackets AND spectators, and there should be stuff to do at a big tournament for people especially if it's taking up venue space for several days.

So, I actually manage trade shows/conventions for a living. While I have no experience running big video game tournaments. I imagine it's basically like running a trade show/convention with a conference attached.
Big FGC tourneys becoming conventions is inevitable if you want to scale them. Basically the booth sales for any convention are the biggest revenue for any show/convention BY FAR. Ticket Sales/Sponsorships/so called merch are insignificant in comparison.
Why is prize money so low? Because the costs of running these tourneys is high to the point they are likely sort of loss leaders to being people into the convention. I can only imagine the production headache's.
I do wanna point out that the whole thing with not enough seating is 100% unexcusable and the show/tournament organizers should have foreseen a year ago, have contingency plans that should have gone into effect ages ago. In any competent event management company this would certainly result in the show manager losing his job.

Both. That's a good thing. People can go to enjoy the booths, cheering for their friends or see the pros compete. It's more interesting and fun that way.
If it was strictly competing then they should have not moved away from the Mandalay Bay which was way better anyways.

EVO is an international event grown around a grassroot tournament tradition. It may create some conflict, but one parte can't survive without the other. Without a massive public watching, Evo is just another local tourny, not sustentable by itself. Without the selection of the best players in the world for a masive challenge, Evo is just another niche convention.
My woman wouldn't be interested in going from Chile to las Vegas to play in the arcades, listen to Maximillian and Justin live and buy a Blanka Chan if it were only the tourney part. She doesn't even play. I do play. I have been playing almost 30 years, an I still wouldn't be saving money and energy to travel 14 hours to become a Port Monster if it were just the tourney. It is much more. It needs to be much more.

I'm bummed that it's only top 6 man. Sunday for evo last year felt like it had good pacing and made the switch from 8 to 6 less noticeable. Probably cause it was first year of sf6 so Capcom had the live band and stuff. I think that was amazing, evo getting the key to the city in 2023 too felt deserved, it was so cool. I was thinking about how if that happened this year intead, just how awkward it would've felt imo.
Tekken 8 and sf6 are games people can get their back blown out in seconds too it just feels bad. any pre match exposition and hype for a 2 sec match makes both exposition and the hype for the matches fall more flat. At least grand finals is always good so the transition between game titles doesn't feel bad.
Missing evo 2023 will probably be my biggest fgc regret lol. That energy was peak n something tells me we're not heading back to that direction again

Majority was fighting games but there was a good three rows of rhythm games, probably two rows of sit down racing games, a row of light gun games. Damn near every fighting game that ever had an arcade machine was there. Had to be like 300 machines there if not more. The with setup the had this year, it might have legitimately been one of the biggest arcades in the country for three days.

So sadly? ABSOLUTELY. It's more of a convention than a raw tournament like it used to.

No. That happened because they fucked up, and every Evo staff I talked to felt as much. After SF6 ended, most of the head staff were already immediately talking about ideas on how they can try to fix it next year. Trust me when I say no one is more disappointed than Rick himself. He looked like he aged 20 years after Evo was done.

"Some people (most of whom don't attend Evo anymore) have criticized Evo" - Yes James. They stopped going for a reason. Sorry this is just a really silly way of reading this, THEY DONT GO ANYMORE AND THEY SAID THEY DONT LIKE IT ANYMORE?!.... obviously? Anyway, for me, the stream experience is not the same for the last 3 evo's also, not their fault specifcally. There are just too many matches to put on, you no longer really see enough of the players to follow someone through the tournament and see their full story unfold, nearly impossible nowadays.. and top 6? The hype isn't there, there aren't storys being told throughout the tournament unless you're actually at the place in person. I don't even like anime games but they are keeping Evo hype alive. You can FEEL the difference. Doesn't matter if you don't want to accept that, people feel it. Can it be fixed? Not without alot more production, alot more. It's BEEN there in years past, multiple pools on mulitple streams running. Can it happen again? I doubt it. - Now to your other point, didn't you just confirm the argument you're trying to argue against? I mean it certainly sounded like it.

Keep in mind that those happen between games for down time. If Justin didn’t play RPS, we’d have to do something else there. Also, it gives us the ability to promote AT&T and that’s sponsors and happy sponsors means more sponsors and more money means more prize money etc. So we gotta increase viewership to increase sponsors to improve the overall ecosystem.

No, by “people not going anymore,” I just meant that they are OLD. Hahaha. Not that they stopped because they don’t enjoy it anymore. But the older folks also remember it more being a tournament only. And many old school players don’t care about the growth of the scene as much anymore.
I’m with you on Top 6, though. I really dislike it. I miss Top 8 so much.
I’m not sure what you are referring to with “my other point”. You’ll have to clarify that one.

I didn't even know EVO existed 4 years ago. I knew the Ken parrying Chun Li video, but didn't get the context at all. I'm too far, I speak a different language and I'm not in the most populated regions for play. Other people's reasons for not knowing may vary a lot, but in the end, the point is the old only-a-tourny concept reaches only a few people.
So it may be a bad feeling for you, who were fortunate enough to be in reach before, but for many, many other players that didn't have such luck, is a very real and concrete, gigantic win.

Evo was better in ballrooms 100% FGC isn't meant to be a massive community. In the grassroots era, prior to pokimane's cookies, it had that underground feel. That way, it filtered out all these clout chasing kids who love to shit on ppl via twitter, who don't go to tournaments or even play fighting games. FGC was like that godlike indie band that had a small but faithful following, then as soon as it became corporate sponsored, the music started sucking. Certain things are not meant to be for the masses. ie what coachella & concerts used to be in the 90s.
