True... Mughal e Azam was made on a much bigger budget but since it wasn't declared we don't have proof of the actual spends. OP Ralhan was smart to declare hence this become an official statement.

Film was really well made. O P Ralhan ji did not rely only on pumping money. And music was superb. Kitni akeli song I love so much. RD was assistant music director and his touch can be seen in the music. He even sang a small portion in one of the songs.
Talash was my first Hindi movie I have viewed in my small town Srikakulam in AP. You might have not even heard of this town
I have seen this movie, its story is very similar to the movie *Phir Kab Milogi* starring Mala Sinha, Vishwajeet. The music of both the movies was melodious, but the song "Kahin Karti Hogi Woh Mera Intezaar" from Phir Kab Milogi , sung by Mukeshji and composed by Panchm Da is one of my favorites.

Really that song was beautiful. But film was flop biswajit & Sanjay were superstar in a short time both were really good looking and reasonably good actors .
Phir kab milogi was a Hrishikesh Mukherjee film & was composed by great Salil Chowdhury,not Panchamda.The song kahin karti hogi adopted from Lonely bull by famous Ventures group of orchestra.

Interesting to learn about this movie "Talaash" which officially was a ONE CRORE film by O P Ralhan.
Despite a wonderful starcast & a double role alongwith good music, a bit sad to learn that the movie did not do that well as per industry standards.

Sharmila didn't play double role in the film.She impersonated as avillage girl besides as the daughter of a multi millonire.
I remember in vividh Bharti this was specifically told that 1 crore budget film ( but Sharmila Tagore did not play double roles)
Double role.. because Sharmila as a single lady did this two roles in the film..one as a rich blue eyed and the other as a poor girl.

Yes I remember that time when film TALASH was released. I remember the film among other cinema theatres was released and shown in Broadway theatre of Dadar East Mumbai. Now that theatre is not existing as it has been converted into Broadway Shopping Mall. I mean a New building in place of the theatre was erected.
It was the main theme that time for advertisement of Talash that it publicised its budget figure of 1 crore on all its posters. Even some other film was being shown in Broadway, the posters of film Talash could be seen with Big Bang of Budget figure of Rs.1 crore shown in the poster even before the release date.
Now the fact that whether any other film was produced with 1 crore and above budget is disputable fact. But may be because of presumption of Black money involvment no other producer might not had disclosed their budget earlier. But its fact that Mr. O.P Ralhan had I think first time disclosed it openly and even used the fact for Film Publicity.
That time's some incomes I can narrate. Salary of President of India was Rs.5000/- Test cricketer used to get Rs. 1000/- per test match. Rajesh Khanna it was gossipped that he was taking the highest amount in the film industry that time. It was said that he used to charge Rs. 10 Lakhs per film. For middle class people four figure salary was a very big achievement. in 1972 when TV strarted first time in India the biggest screen TV was costing Rs.2700/- which was a very big amount for middle class people. People used talk in thousands and rich persons were called Lakhpati. Even one film called Dus Lakh came in late 1960s. There was a state owned Lottery in Maharashtra the 1st prize of which was 1 Lakh which was considered a very big amount that time. Remembee1975 film Sholey. शोले मे अमजद खान गब्बर सिंग दिखाए गये है | और गब्बर सिंग का डायलॉग क्या था याद है | कितना इनाम है रे मुझ पर ? तो कोई बोलता है 50,000 /- देखिये 50,000 भी कितनी बडी रक्कम होती थी |

Still, l could remember, during my childhood, l was listening to beautiful songs of this film with great interest. At a later stage, l could watch this film at a cinema Hall Athurugiriya city, in Colombo in 1970s. I am lal ranjith opatha from Srilanka.

I recently saw Talash and thoroughly enjoyed it.Hugely entertaining movie with great music by SD & RD Burman(asst music director),excellent comedy by OP Ralhan.Both Rajendra Kumar and Sharmila looked their very best.'Karle Pyar Karle' is one of Helens best item number which is very much underrated. Felt like watching a Manmohan Desai or Prakash Mehra movie with great sets, excellent songs & dance numbers, superb comedy and glamarous lead pair.It was one of those movies which had all the ingredients to be blockbuster but unfortunately felt below expectations at the BO(another one being Karz).Maybe if it had released 4/5 years earlier it could have been a blockbuster as those were Rajendra Kumar's golden phase.

According to my information ,Mughal Azam was only first film ,budget one crore ,producer sale maratha minder canima and spent all his investment .but I didn't know about " talash" I miss it.i hope your knowledge is better than me!

1 cr film in 1969!It seems absurd.It was a publicity stunt.Rajendra Kumar & Sharmila Tagore were two highest paid actors at that time.Still I believe it was a joke.Talash was a musical film.It contained 8/10 songs all of them was superb.S D Burman was paid 1 lac rupees for the music.My two favourite songs in the film....Khai hai re humne kasam & Tere naina talash kare jise.
