I was serving in Northern Ireland with the British Army when the Accuracy International Rifles arrived; up until then we had L42A1 7.62mm Sniper Rifles - which was derived from the Lee Enfield. That Rifle required considerable skill & hand fitting of the bolt, trigger & stock to get it to shoot well. I really enjoyed the L42 because of the craftsmanship required to bring one into service, but they were old.
The birth of the AI L96 rifle was troubled. It was a superb rifle and could really deliver incredible accuracy, but at that time it was so different from anything else we had and you could say it was the arrival of a new genre of modular rifle that enabled the sniper to set up his own rifle how he wanted it. The quality of those first rifles was poor and I learned, about a decade later, why that happened. None of us could understand why the rifle, that the SAS & SBS were so enthusiastic about, was so awful. We sent back 6 of 9 rifles issued to the unit. I subsequently had a look at one of those PM rifles and they were superb.
I met Malcolm Cooper, who was the olympic rifle marksman that AI were involved with, during a trial for a semi-automatic sniper rifle: we were comparing the HK MSG90 & Stoner SR25, with the new AI AW as a benchmark added in. I was very familiar with the AI L96 by then and we had concluded it was a super rifle, but reworking those defective rifles had cost AI and they retreated to their garage to rethink things. They had worked with the Swedish Army on the AW and came up with an amazingly high quality, highly accurate and highly reliable rifle. It was like these were two different AI's.
Cooper told us that AI was compelled to field the L96 for trials, but they weren't totally ready for it. There were 'rumours' that the other competitors in that trial were being repaired, but I can't comment on that. By now, though, the AW was just a remarkably good rifle and I fired the 7.62mm one during that trial; of course it comfortably was more accurate and more ergonomic than the HK or Stoner.
A year later we would have the chance to get the .338 Lapua Magnum version and it was better still! It would take several more years before they were issued to the Infantry and the .338 was devastatingly accurate.
Pity they didn't build an assault rifle, because the Army took many years to sort out SA80!

Been through a long range shooting course - and - I learned more in 10 mins with this guy on basic set up than the entire course. Example - pushing the scope as far rearward in the clear-focus-zone - whilst setting up prone - because when you shoot crouched or standing your face (eye) comes back a bit. This ensures you have a good eye relief for the scope in all shooting positions. No one I’ve listened to has ever mentioned this - and it makes perfect sense. He had several other nuggets of instruction that were similar and unique. He also had a good teaching style for implying the info in the least amount of time - efficient use of time and attention.

    • @StuninRub

No, the scope should be as far forward as possible. You adjust your LOP, not your eye box.

Tip for disturbing the rifle less when unlocking the bolt-- put the pad of your thumb ontop of the cocking piece and use index finger under the bolt handle ball to cam the handle upwards by twisting your hand at the wrist. then cycle as normal. 60 degree throw actions are notorious for heavier bolt lift then a 90 (part of the design), this helps mitigate some of that heavy bolt lift

Just to add to the 2 lug vs 3 lug discussion, if you have the same striker cooking force on a given action, 2 lug with a longer 90deg lift is a lighter than on the bolt than a 3 lug and shorter lift. Basically your cooking ramp is less steep.
Additionally there are 2 lug actions where they are asymmetric such as sako/Tikka and they have essentially a 70 degree lift.
    Great video, great insight gents

Great video. One fun note on humans seeing cant angle - Surprisingly the human eye can potentially detect cant angle direction even under 0.25 of a degree. (In the video the gentleman argues the human eye can't detect 1 degree of cant angle) In college I took a class on the Psychology of Perception and to pass had to conduct a study where I chose to test human sensitivity to cant angle and the effect color contrast has on our ability to detect which way an image is canted. Long story short it was absolutely mind blowing to find the test group was able to detect direction of cant angle both quickly and consistently even when images were displayed for fractions of a second and canted as little as a quarter of a degree of angle (or even less) (color contrast proved to have little effect on ability to detect cant angle direction). Anyway, would love to own an AI one day!

One of my biggest pet peeves is the phrase “sniper rifle “ …. 😂
It’s so damn over used for everything with a scope… but the AI is a real “ Sniper’s rifle” but the shooter is the biggest part of the system

If the rifle can do Half MOA, it's an automatic Sniper Rifle, even if the doofus behind the trigger can't perform to a high standard. You Truly can buy your way to high performance without even shooting once. That's the magic of expensive finely crafted Machines. A high grade rifle will always be good person to person, but a cheap Just As Good COPE rifle will have deep lows and high momentary peaks person to person.

I get what you're saying, and I don't want to be debbie downer BUT Pros don't spend $2,000-$3,000-$4,000 on fire arms cause of style. A person that's never fired a gun will get one hole groups on a high grade rifle in hours of trying. But a Certified Pro will never get one hole groups on a $400 AR, even if a century's worth of attempts were to pass.

I think DMR is worse, it’s just any battle or assault rifle with a scope. The term “designated marksman” is stupid in itself. Just call the guys marksmen or sharpshooters.

Barrel life isn’t dependent on calibre but the pressures/psi going through it. You can run hot loads in a small calibre and get less barrel life compared to a bigger calibre

You should have a routine for your bag placement just like elbow, trigger finger et al. = reticle height should be macro manipulated by front bipod not by compromising bag position (fluff on recoil), because its going to shift your shot in unpredictable ways, it shifts how the body mates with rifle too....just like shooting prone at 100y vs standing tripod - without a TON of repetition/practice you POI will differ even though same POA. Micro adjustments with bag fine.

    • @bruiserindustries
      @bruiserindustries Год назад

Bags are made the way they are to be manipulated in multiple ways and multiple heights. Constant bipod adjustment is not the key but I do agree you should not be squeezing the ever living crap out of the bag. Most bags are made to have multiple heights so bipod can be a general height and then you have 4 heights to start your “micro” adjustments
