If you are one of many who gets higher BP readings in the doctor's office than you do at home, I suggest recording your BP readings in the comfort of your own home, and taking your readings with you to your doctor's appts. That way you can demonstrate what your BP is normally and get them off your back.

I think we should all have our own BP monitor at home, when I’m at the clinic my BP is always 160’s over 90’s, but when I’m at home 130’s over low 80’s
I think it’s stressful just going to the clinic and you can never have realistic numbers at the clinic.

    • @bigred9428
      @bigred9428 2 месяца назад +2

I keep saying I wished I had never gotten a blood pressure monitor. My BP went up years ago when I gave birth and my aunt gave me a monitor. I was so paranoid when the numbers went up that something would happen, that I stopped moving (there were other factors too, but that was a main one). I think if I did not own a monitor, that I would have exercised a lot more, and would therefore lowered my BP.

I'm 61, and have seen the BP numbers change as you described. I even clicked on this video because I was just thinking of that. I'm appalled at some people who boast of readings like 98/67 and still think they should go lower. Correct me if I'm wrong, but we need a certain amount of pressure to keep the blood vessel walls clean. Say I have some algae growing on the one side of my house. If I use a very strong power washer, the algae will be gone, but so will the paint and maybe some of the wood. If I barely trickle the hose, nothing's going to happen, and, because of the extra water, the algae will probably grow even thicker.
I don't know if big medicine is behind it, or if they want to give people a goal they can see and measure, but everyone is on something these days.

Follow the money. I was put on BP meds 40 yrs ago when , gasp, I read 140/90 and after just one reading mind you. Fast forward to now, still on the same meds and still getting readings in the 140/80 range. I’ve done stress reduction, weight reduction, exercised like a maniac to virtually none, meditated, journaled-140/fill in a number 70 or above. Last physical I asked my PCP if the goal will one day be 0/0 and observed it statistically impossible to get every person from cradle to grave to the exact same BP.

I have a reliable honest mechanic who works on my car. Often times he lets me know that the expensive thing I thought needed fixing, didn’t need fixing. I wish my doctors would do that. 😃
There’s been many times that they’ve prescribed meds for me that I didn’t need. Some of them had very dangerous side effects. And my doctor knew better than to prescribe a medication (Allopurinol) that would further damage my already compromised kidneys. But he insisted I needed to take it for the rest of my life. I’m glad I did my homework. I did not take it. And I never had another problem.

I really don't go to the Dr. unless I'm sick or injured, but my experience with current Dr. is always the same, through drugs at the blood pressure reading. Your description of the blood pressure spike on the office visit is spot on! I rushed to my Dr appt. had just eaten and was injured as well, of course my normally low pressure of 130/74 was elevated to 150/90? So the Dr asked nothing about my diet or exercise or lifestyle. Just tried to give me drugs, I said no and started taking magnesium thanks to you! Side note I'm a 54 year old, 235lb 5'11" body builder, so according to the BMI chart I morbidly obesse as well! I now take my blood pressure in the morning before coffee or eating. And then I wait several minutes after my fussing around with making coffee and getting the cuff on, and I take it again. Then I sit quietly for a few minutes and take it again. By then it will be about 110-118/58-68. I'll take a photo of the reading. I'll show that photo to my provider who will get a reading of 154/78 later in the day. I'm 73.

Although, it does seem to be that it is expected that one should have blood pressure like that of a teenager even when they are old. Also, it never ceases to amaze me that there is no individuality in this whole thing, none whatsoever, but one size fits all. Thanks Adam, good info mate.

Like many here, I experience white coat syndrome. Despite a healthy lifestyle - I'm a slim 66-year-old who maintains a regular exercise routine and primarily plant-based diet - my blood pressure readings skyrocket in clinical settings. Thankfully, my understanding doctors have allowed me to monitor my blood pressure at home, where the results are consistently normal. The in-office discrepancy, however, often leads to unwarranted concern from some nurses.
The history of blood pressure recommendations you shared is intriguing, and it does raise questions about potential profit motives behind the push for lower targets. Given my family history of heart disease, this is a concern I share.

Here are the facts: sprint study headed by big pharma consultant gave that 120/80 number. In my opinion his Big Pharma customer wanted BP sales to rise. And AMA wanted more office visit sales for the horde of white coats. I bought that report called SPRINT Study. I ran the numbers to discover the difference in all source mortality was a scant 0.5% difference. Hence there was no significant difference in control group deaths. My conclusion is 120/80 is marketing. In my case my cardiologist increased my meds. I am now 115/75. And dizzy most of the time.

To start my hubby is on water pills until next month when I predict he’ll get pushed to take more meds. we have stopped processed foods, sugar and alcohol- adopted the lifestyle, including walks every night. His BP is reducing slowly… which is awesome, but all the doc will want is to get to 120/80 - magic number. I say Pharmaceutical companies (and pusher doctors) ought to be taken out back and taught a lesson.
As an aside, the doc can’t give an answer as to why my BP is fine and hubby’s isn’t… we eat the same meals… he shrugged and said probably genetics 🙄

So been self monitoring my bp throughout the day lately and I regularly have high bp around 140/90 during the day and evening but always below 120/80 first thing in the morning - this morning was 117/76. I’m trying all the Docs tricks to see if I can get it down during the day without the meds. Hard to say if working. My bp is all over the place. Can jump or drop like crazy with one reading slightly high and the next, crazy high and then the next, back down - with each reading right after the other. But always way over 120/80 during the day. If I do breathing exercises for 5 mins or so before measuring I can usually get my bp down significantly but still higher than normal. Probably need the meds if I can’t keep it down I guess.

If even the stress of a doctor's office, which is minor compared to work and family stressors, how meaningful is blood pressure? Then consider that your body position, your arm position, the placement of the cuff on the arm, crossing of the legs, etc. all affect readings.
Further, I've read studies that the correlation of hypertension with stroke, the standard doctor scare tactic, is actually fairly low and lower than other correlations.
Is there really a good reason for the numbers considered high to be getting lower and lower? Or is that a way for doctors to maintain recoeat business for prescriptions?

Correct me if I am wrong but what we need to know is the real, honest effects of 130/90 or 140/90 or 150/95 etc etc. For example what are the readings of people who have strokes, heart attacks, brain bleeds etc etc. How do we actually know the real effects of these numbers. The doctors talk in probabilities ie 140/90 increases your risk of stroke by x%. Thats fine but not good enough.
