- In this video, I will show you how to differentiate between two common skin conditions that affect the genital area: skin tags and genital warts.
To be more precise you will learn how STD doctors differentiate between those two common conditions in “real life”.

I have been practicing internal medicine and helping people with friction and herpes for over two decades.

✓ Why it is important to differentiate between genital warts and skin tags
✓ How doctors tell the difference between those two genital skin conditions.
They usually consider two things in combination:
o Visual exam (look at the rash)
o Context or history of the rash
I will talk in great detail about visual examination for both conditions (genital warts and skin tags) comparing them side by side.
We will compare both conditions (side by side):
✓ General appearance
✓ Color
✓ Feel
✓ Growth pattern
I will go over the importance of the history of the rash in establishing the correct diagnosis for genital warts and skin tags.
The history part consists of:
o How the rash is evolving over time (or how the skin appearance changes over time)
o Prevalence (how common the condition is in general)
■ 85% of people get genital warts over their lifetime
■ 15% of people get skin tags
o Genetic predisposition
■ Skin tags have a genetic component
■ Genital wart is an infectious condition caused by the HPV virus.
o Patient age
Younger patients usually have genital warts
People over the age of 40 get skin tags

Thank you, you explain it well Doc. I have skin tags on my face and some part of my body. It's itchy during summer. I thought it is warts and that's how I called it before. I also noticed before that I have one on my private part. Everytime I pee and wash it, I feel it. But I become worried now because it's getting bigger. Although I never felt anything like itchiness or something. So I searched on the net about warts on genital area. It confused me because I never had any intimate relationship to anyone. ince last year I've had periodic sores on my genitals. I have been teste twice for genital herpes and both my swabs (PCR) came back negatives. My blood only confirmed my HSV1 diagnosis (which is normal, I've had cold sores since I am a child). I've done the blood test 8 months after my last sexual intercose. I have many symptoms that still make me think it's herpes (pain and itchiness, fatigue, head aches and nerve pain before the lesion appears). Is it possible that I got genital HSV1 years after getting it orally and it just does not show in my swabs? Thank you for your answer dr popoola
